The longer I work on game dev stuff, the more exponentially my respect for HAL grows. They ARE professionals for a reason (opposed to my bum self working off an 8 year old laptop), but goodness. I'm working on some VFX on UE5 and the more I work on them the more I'm astounded by the ones present in Forgotten Land across every layer of design. Star-Crossed World's visual identity is relatively straightforward with the whole "game blue" thing, but the shaders for the meteor shards emanating energy and altering the terrain are genuinely gorgeous, helps seeing the game run better (and having nicer Anti Aliasing) on Switch 2. HAL is genuinely a reminder to myself to why I even got into this field even knowing the challenges of it, I really truly hope to achieve something like that one day.Forgive the blogpost, I needed some stress relief from UE5 being a slight nightmare compared to my more Unity-experienced rear, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to bump the thread seeing the page count is at 9 and all. I can probably put it better than the other guy did by saying that Bandana is bland and convictionless. There's nothing really "to" him, no real draw besides "oh he's cute", which all Waddle Dees have just as a baseline. Most other characters, you can point at and say "there's a lot of reasons someone might like him", like Dedede's larger-than-life personality and goofass faces, or Meta Knight LARPing as Batman and somehow pulling it off when he's a blueberry with the same face as the resident strawberry shortcake and nap enthusiast, plus that softer side he tries desperately to keep under wraps. Bandana just... doesn't have that. Any of it. Typically all he exists to do on his own is say things like>Golly, Kirby, we sure need to complete the main objective of the game! Boy oh boy!and wave his hands around like a little retard.The contemporaries people tend to talk about (Gooey and Ado mainly, even if only one of those two ever held the player 2 spot) at least had more to do, had more intrigue to them, or exhibited more personality in their games, even with much less screentime. It only makes Bandana feel even lesser by comparison, when he'd already be weak on his own when you look at the rest of the core 4 that Kumazaki nepo baby'd him into. He's soft, safe, and nothing.
