I've never been more conflicted about whether or not to buy a game than I am here. I'm not a big multiplayer gamer. I'm especially picky with PvP stuff. But the server slam really scratched an itch that I didn't know I had, albeit for only 4 hours or so. And I kinda want more.

It's not that I'm worried about this being a Concord, its clearly not, even if Sony might have had some crazy unrealistic expectations for this niche-ass game, but how much longevity am I really gonna get out of this knowing that I will definitely not survive on the harder maps? To say nothing of the many single player titles coming out in the next month or 2, at least one of which will probably kill my interest in this (I'd put money on either Crimson Desert or Saros being the one to do that). Plus my current backlog of games I already own that I really should be spending more time with.

This is also an issue. Even the "easy" maps are built for squads so if you don't have people playing alongside you some of the quests are pretty much impossible unless you feel like grinding them out until you get lucky.

Thats the weird part, I actually had a pretty good experience with PvP in the server slam. I did get my shit handed to me on a couple of occasions but nothing as infuriating as what happened to me in the Arc beta (had a decent run for the first time only to get shot in the back mid-extraction. Uninstalled immediately after this happened)

Are there more players on maps compared to server slam? I noticed a lot more pvp now compared to before.

See this 4 year old reddit post for exactly how aim cones and aim assist work in Destiny 2/Marathon/Tiger Engine. The very short answer, is that there is an invisible cone coming out of your camera, with the center being the middle of your reticle. As long as this cone has a part of it touching the enemy, you will get a hit, or if it is touching their head/crit spot, you get a crit. This means you want your aim cone to be larger (higher angle). As you fire, the aim cone shrinks due to penalties. You want the penalty for this to be non-existent (as small as possible).

I wouldn't be surprised if the range and zoom stat was also factored into this calculation without telling you, since it works that way in Destiny as well.

And yes, all of these stats affect MnK as well as controller, only difference is reticle friction.

If you'd like a more PVE focus Arc Raiders does a good job of it now. Since they added aggression based match making you can end up in many matches in a row where nobody shoots each other and they focus on killing Arc/completing quests.

That said, Arc has its own host of problems. They've continually made the game more of a grind and a little harder so it's not as new player friendly as it was. There also aren't a lot of quests and they aren't particularly compelling to do.

This is something I kind of hope they change. Make the exits have a timer so that you can run in and escape in the last second. Having that 10 second timer just heavily encourages exit camping.

You should be doing this in solos anyways, ALWAYS linger on the map for a bit to scoop up extra shit or do some PVE. There are ZERO spawns after the initial wave, Rooks cannot join in and buttfuck you, they crave Trio Booty. It's hard if you have no friends to play it with and aren't an absolute god at PvP FPS. Imagine being a casual ARC player who barely PvPs trying this game out. You queue solos and get smoked running to your first building by some dude with a thermal sniper. You try again, get to your first loot zone, and get gibbed by a rat shotgunner the first container you go to loot. You try again, and are once again blown out by some dude off spawn. You give it one more go, loot a few things, engage the AI and barely survive, then get creamed by the dude that came by to hunt you and clean up because he heard the fight you had with the AI. You then put the fucking game down and refund because who the fuck would keep a game after an experience like that?

You're making the same mistake Bungie did: Assuming your massive playerbase are all hardcore PvP players with premade teams all ready to drop 40 bucks and poopsock the game for the next year.

In Tarkov the armor, penetration, bleed and ricochet system are so crucial to that game because it adds tension
Running high tier gear and high tier gear does make you very strong but it never necessarily makes you invincible, you can die if you just happen to get shot in the face by a 9mm and I guess that's the one part that really sucks but there are a few items like armored face masks, visors and other bulkier helmets that protect you from buckshot or lower caliber guns

but marathon doesnt have any of this shit
theres no depth, it just reminds me of apex legends with extractions

It’s genuinely not people’s fault that shooting other players is only the only fun thing to do in the game and exfil camping is the most reliable way to find other players. Looting sucks, the environments suck, the objectives suck, there’s 0 reason not to KoS all other players.
However my friend, to you I recommend trying out camping the NuCaloric building on perimeter or another location needed for a liaison contract. Guaranteed source of unsuspecting victims, often multiple in a game.
This is just an extraction shooter with chores and you can bully the shit out of people while they try to do chores

It's a solid 6.5-7/10.

Solos are clearly tacked on.
Melee is stronger than a lot of weapons.
Exit camping is constant. (I've found people exit camping all the way to 3 minutes remaining.)
PVE/Quests are clearly built around being in trios but the game relea
Solo spawns are terrible, there are too many players at the start so you just turn and rush one side to find/fight another player within 30 seconds of the start.
Trios feels too empty opposite solos. You could go 10+ minutes without even hearing other people shooting.
Lots of bugs. I haven't encountered any gameplay breaking ones but lots of small ones.
UI is a nightmare to navigate and deal with.
Season pass is pointless.
Skins are basically all recolours. (I don't care so much about microtransactions but I might as well mention them.)
Shells are not all balanced.

The game clearly wasn't ready for launch and the devs have admitted such by begging reviewers to wait until the end of the month (multiple weeks post launch) to rate it. Effectively saying "Let us try and finish the game real quick before you review it!"

I’m having a VERY hard time understanding how anyone is enjoying this… I’ve put in 8 hours today and I’ve only extracted 3/4 times.

Yes I’ve played solo and trios, none of my friends want to play this game, so I’m stuck with randoms.

I’ve been playing PvP games for over 20 years, Im usually top 3 on destiny PvP randoms, COD, diamond in apex playing with randoms, and have no problem taking out multiple teams in arc raiders back to back; but something about this game is not clicking what so ever/does not make sense. I get the first shots off and they hit but why am I dying so much faster than anyone I’m shooting?

I’m beyond exhausted from this ttk. I can not truly believe anyone out there absolutely loves this ttk. I think you’re all actually coping and trying to pretend it’s okay if you say you like this - or you’re just rats - plain and simple. I guarantee every single one of you have gotten killed and thought “okay, yeah that ttk is a little fuct”. I promise anyone that has played my raids today would be in this exact same anecdotal evidentiary position about this game.

Not to mention the quests explanations are abysmal. They don’t explain anything and often leave something out so you’re stuck HAVING TO GOOGLE THE ANSWER, not because it’s a complicated puzzle; but because bungie dioesnt tell you shit like “you need this key or need to turn the power on before you can do step1”. I absolutely don’t think there should be hand holding but this is just plain negligence not explaining a lot of these abbreviations and terminology that only exists in marathon.

Wow had my first audible 'fuck this stupid shit' moment. Apparently if you start an exfil beacon right as the countdown to final exfil starts, it will do the entire normal exfil for you, including the animation of you escaping. And then count you as dying because you weren't at final exfil. I've done multiple exfils like this but starting with 10 seconds left, but apparently having your little ipad out when the timer hits zero means a silent go fuck yourself. I could have run to the final exfil, it was only one POI away.

The real answer is that the current and future player numbers would be fine for a mid level studio with a reasonable development budget and proper expectations. It could be a well done but niche extraction shooter and ride out a reasonable life.
