I think style skills could solve both issues (kind of). Imagine some kind of skill that gives you a new style of play that's really really dependent on the gameplay skill of the player. In theory it could be what's meta assuming you play well but it's simply not something most casuals would be able to use regularly so they'd resort to the usual damage skills to get something close to that damage without the strict gameplay requirements. The only issues I see are casuals following guides and forcing themselves to use the meta skill even if they suck at it. I guess the solution would be having style skills that are less strict so casuals can still have style skills they can enjoy even if they can't handle the meta one. I guess the real issue is balancing around these skills because then good players and bad players would effectively be playing two different games

I've realized there are two kinds of people who play these games namely the experiencers and the refiners. The experiencers just want to see cool things, experience monsters, and explore maps. After one or two hunts they've had their fill and want to move on. These players tend to prefer totally new monsters, maps, and collab content. The newer mainline games are made explicitly for this group. Now the refiners play to git gud and that means improving at the game. Refiners don't have an issue hunting the same monster 50 times because they enjoy getting better at fights. These players tend to prefer returning monsters and maps, cohesion between games, and nostalgic callbacks. Now the issue with all this is that most players that currently make up the community are experiencers while the fundamental game design of the series explicitly caters to refiners. I'd even go so far as to say the experiencers made up the majority even back before world existed. This is why tokuda has been working towards changing fundamental systems within the game so the series caters more towards experiencers. It's such an interesting thing to see unfold. I'm not sure I've ever seen a community so utterly at odds with the fundamental game design of the series they play

You don't have to explicitly go out of your way seeking novel content within monhun to be an experiencer. By virtue of being new to the series, everything is new to you and everything is confusing and you obviously would lack that understanding necessary to be a refiner so you're just along for the ride essentially until you learn more. Now is that different from somebody who's played 4 of these games and still explicitly goes and plays frontier or tri for the unique experience? In a way yes but not in a way that's meaningful with regard to the point here. You'd both still be playing mostly to just be along for the ride.

Let's say you heard about tri and wanted to play it and I happened to ask why. If your answer is "I heard it has underwater combat that sounds so sick and I heard there's a big ass sand city and a big whale monster so cool", then obviously I'd consider you an experiencer. You want to play it for the experiences unique to the game. Now if you answered with something like "well im getting my ass kicked by lagiacrus in wilds so i want to try and understand his fight more by fighting him in his original game", then obviously you'd be a refiner. Realistically very few would answer with the second response mostly because there's a certain level of understanding necessary to even get to that point and have that mindset.
