Originally I came to theorize that Rudy can remove his soul and that all souls have unique behavior when outside of their hosts in the dark world, and I could use that to explain pretty much everything (Rudy's physical condition, Knight motives, how it got into the bunker through the light world, how it can shape-change despite being a lightner that can open dark fountains, etc) except why the Knight would both try to capture Toriel and be willing to give up on her in favor of taking Undyne instead along with that one panel of the prophecy that depicts multiple Knights. As time has gone on I've shifted my theory to be that if a monster's soul is removed in a dark world then it perhaps gets corrupted into forms similar to what we see as the Knight, and as of right now both Carol and Rudy's souls have been Knights before. I think the one we see in Chapter 3 was trying to either capture Toriel's soul or take her to the bunker and do it, but instead settled for Undyne's upon her unexpected arrival. I think we'll see Asgore's soul be taken in Chapter 5 to reveal the concept, and the very obtaining of which will be the specific reason a dark fountain will be opened in the festival or Flower King. With how everything has been established to work so far, I think this would explain most thingsAlso I want to hug that Asgore but that's unrelated

So, I don't think he compromised on his vision of what is literally happening on weird route, but again, it was just so damn uncharacteristic of him to not have this thought through a MILLION times to ensure the message was exactly what he wanted.

Undertale was concise, neat, easily digestible, full package release that requires absolutely NO background to jump in and enjoy. You don't have to do everything to get a lot out of it. Deltarune is a sort-of-sequel-thing, staggered release over a decade, complex or even convoluted, and you need to be obsessive to get the Real Deltarune Experience (tm) despite Toby's attempts at bending over backwards to make it excessively accessible at surface level. The things that Deltaruners love DR for have more in common with the average story game fandom than with the universality of Undertale.
