I have now finished Proud Nordics including post game content.Is it it worth paying full price for? No. Oland Island is okay but was generally underwhelming. You don't even fight Canute, and his shield sister does nothing the whole time. It was good not to have the Carnac kids around but that's about it until the final main segment of it which was more cool.What I really don't like about it from a story perspective is setting up Loto as Adol's grand nemesis. You got glimpses of this in the base game, but the postgame snippet made it clear that Loto just gets involved with any random thing and that in any future Ys game he could be the random confidant of the main villain that guides them into doing whatever tickles his fancy. Ys doesn't need an overarching villain that Adol can never actually truly defeat because he's implied to be behind Adol's North Pole adventure.Combat still feels like a downgrade over even the party games and I hope it gets reworked also because every Ys game for the next while being Adol becoming a strong pair with some girl will get boring. I did like that I ended the base game at like level 95, saving the exp gain items you naturally get it means that you can get level 99 naturally. Making full use of the level scale is nice and you don't really see that in games.

So now that we know Kai 2 has been written, how do we feel about how Falcom will handle the pacing? To me, their cardinal sins are always starting off sequel games slowly and putting players in the shoes of bracers/pretend-bracers way too early on. People wanna see what happened after where they left off, not go kill some fuckoff monster in a highway. Japanese companies really struggle with pacing, so my theory, and sadly the very realistic one, is that Falcom structures Kai 2 as normal JRPG that has maybe two, at worst three, filler chapters that are just doing sidequests until the story advances - my most recent example of going through this was with FFVII remake. Not ideal but a clear improvement over having to do 4SPGs during the day and at night before the story can move forward.In a perfect world I think they’d learn to more naturally spread them out, make less of them, and with longer expiration times: you could a chapter or two to finish a 4SPG tackled at your leisure and not when the game commands you to. They’d learn that they can’t and shouldn’t follow up a big story reveal or fight with>phew alright guys let’s wind down by hitting the streets and knocking off some 4PSGsand follow the old cliche of putting a bulk of them before the final dungeon. If there is something I wish more games took note of regarding the controversial FFXVI, is that its final sidequests has some really good writing and were easily the best of the entire game.Also, if you MUST include a Garten, make it strictly boss fights/unique monster fights like in Kuro 1.
