It has a seamless experience where YOU get to control what you loot, what you're doing, what you're shooting at and where you can go. It has a lot more freedom than most extraction shooters have where the genre generally throws up a bunch of menus and has massive shifts from downtime to uptime. It's also a singleplayer game with a story that begins and ends with world-building and real-life influence.Which is honestly why I don't like the genre unless it leans heavily into a direction to be something different to the point of almost not being like the original games that influneced the genre. It attempts to take the idea of scavenging, looting, risk and reward and put you on a railroad or track that actively punishes you from deviating. Every game in the genre asks so much of you, but gives little back, it doesn't trust you, it's inherently restrictive and is the equalivent of eating at fast food that asks for michelin star prices. Ironically, the one I like most is ARC Raiders because of that. The maps are large, the ARC and map conditions change up your focus/entire lobby's focus an the crafting focus doesn't make every run seem like a total waste of time. It actually takes the gameplay systems and properly casualizes it, unlike Tarkov or Marathon which feel like they went halfway.
I think Sony is going to allow Marathon to continue for a year of scaled-back content (whatever that means for Marashart) under the off chance of a fluke turnaround. But they will cannibalize Bungie leadership and steer them towards focusing on D3.
