Hotaruko’s characterization as a “goody-two-shoes” is such a forced mess. Tactics wasn’t even using any sort of actual leverage on her. It’s not “We’ll kill you and your family” it’s literally “You know, our evil paramilitary organization pays real good, now go kill your colleague” and Tactics members can just resign if they want I guess.Not that her backstory ever made any sense period. It’s made clear that most of the public doesn’t exactly know what Digimon are, officially cold heart has no known cause and the ministry literally tries to play Digimon births off as a hardware glitch that you simply report for a free replacement Sapotama. They have an interest in keeping that stuff low profile, which fundamentally doesn’t track with ruining people’s lives for it since that does literally the opposite …and also how can people ostracize you for something they don’t know about? Honoka is a fun character though. Good on her to point out that the whole group hug session was cheap melodrama, but it’s kind of irksome in the sense that pointing out or satirizing bad writing doesn’t feel earned unless the writers prove they can actually do better, whereas beatbreak is overdramatic cliches all the way down so far.Anyway I could see Honoka turning on Wong just for fun later on, she (and Kaito too) strikes me as the sort of character who defects and then gets stomped by the true villain to showcase their power.

It takes Granit & Hotaruko a good while in both circumstances to come to realise those. He actually had to stand up for himself for once while she needed her spirit broken by actually facing defeat. I really like the extreme contrast that Tactics pairing have: he's defence in the form of attack, while she's the exact opposite. No surprise they've done so well together.
