I can’t go back to Awakening now that I am no longer a noob with no exposure to anime and know what words like loli and tsundere mean, because nearly every character in the game is mainly one stock anime character trope. Like, Sumia's gimmick is being clumsy and tripping over everything. That's a thing, it's called dojikko. Tharja is a yandere. Owain is a chuunibyou. You have the character who has no presence so nobody notices him, you have the character who's defined by unrequited love, you have the character who is a boy everyone mistakes for a girl. Even considering it was the first thing of its kind I'd seen and most of these character archetypes were actually unfamiliar to me, it's very starter-level comedy stuff, they succeeded at creating a large cast with distinct and memorable personalities at the cost of them being little more than basic caricatures. I sympathize at least a little with the struggle of doing that when you're very limited in your ability to give everyone unique designs and abilities, in a cast this large you need to establish a foothold somehow before you can add depth. The voice clips and little bits of emotional depth they put into the support conversations are working hard to carry the characters beyond just being their one joke. Even with the dating/eugenics simulator element of the game being a bit cringe, there is often an earnestness behind the characters and the story in general to my recollection that I think prevents the endeavor from collapsing completely. But still, the writing is pretty reliant on hype or vibes and doesn't hold up very well to any sort of scrutiny. Like a third of the game is this filler arc that doesn't have much to do with anything else, at least I don't remember Walhart being relevant to the overall plot with Grima at all. Being broad and simple could’ve worked, and there are places where I recall it did, but overall I wouldn't say it really comes together or manages to elevate cliche through execution.
Fire Emblem was riding high.The success of Heroes meant the budget for Engage could be blown up. Full voice acting and no expense spared. In the meantime, side project "Three Houses" is being co-developed with Koei Tecmo. It releases and ends up a surprise hit. The series starts to rival Kirby popularity. More projects are greenlit in response. A quick Warriors cash in for 3H is pumped out asap, it is also well received. This is fortunate as Engage has ballooned in budget. The planned 30th anniversary release date is postponed. Another mobile game gets greenlit and Engage has a manga tie in commissioned too.Finally it's time for Engage. Internal testing suggests negative feedback for the game. So it is released with minimal advertising. Early responses are muddled... "How much did it actually cost to make this?"At any rate, Engage has a ton of content ready for Heroes and a huge playable cast. So it will serve to tide people over. Then it bombs in popularity polls. Even the manga is at the bottom of the sales chart, nothing can save it. Mika Pikazo enters a fucking DEPRESSION stage and won't draw. It keeps getting worse, aging like milk. Engage is clearly a huge piece of shit. They force feed Engage in Heroes, there is no going back. Double the fuck down. In the background they start developing a 3H sequel asap. But now even the Heroes cash cow is declining and they wasted all the money on gay vtubers. Nobody cares for a single character. Each banner sets new lows. It's worse than aging like milk, it's now so inedible they have to remove it from the shelf to stop killing the FE series. Shadows is literally Shadow dropped because nobody cares, just recoup the losses while you can. Everything left is on Fortune's Weave now. It has to work. It has to.

So they cannot be too involved with the story, if at all. The only characters who could possibly get a chance to shine in this regard are the lords, since you must carry them to the finishing line. But then, the lords have ended up milquetoast boardline self inserts more often than not, so their writing doesn't tend to be very good either. They also indirectly struggle due to the permadeath mechanics, since all their companions must be interchangeable, which obviously makes it hard to get good character dynamics going. Needless to say, it only gets so much worse with the introduction of avatars who don't even have a fixed sex. By way of comparison, the grand accomplishment of 3H lies simply in utilizing the lord characters - the only characters who CAN be properly woven into the narrative - to the fullest extent. But you'll still find that even in 3H the supporting cast isn't all that impressive at the end of the day, because it's necessary for any of them to be easily discarded by the player, too. That's the price to pay for a strategy game that gives you all this freedom for choosing the soldiers of your army and making it possible for them to perish. If you wanted both this freedom and good character writing, you'd basically need to offer a different route for every possible army configuration. Unfortunately, this is far beyond the ability of IS to deliver.
