Bakers all get asthma because they breath flour and dust all day, they also get pretty bad RSI and cysts in the back of their knees. Electricians all have fucked up backs and necks because people like to run wires in the ceiling so it involves a lot of standing on ladders working on things directly above you. You can mitigate the muscle imbalances, posture issues and injuries in desk jobs by working out and you also get to wfh.

Typing code is free, but now you can't do it anymore without AI. AI companies are currently burning through billions of dollars, they've already started to become more aggressive with monetization and closing off free access. Same goes for art and everything that AI is used for.

To ANYONE out there (mainly "professional advice givers" on the internet, also known as snake oil salesmen, also known as YouTubers) who parasocially tells me and OTHER PEOPLE like me to "make small games, don't make your dream game":
FUCK. OFF.
I'd rather make the game that *I* want to make than the game that you want me to make. You are not entitled to my skills. I am not your personal small-game-developing slave. I WILL make a game from scratch that *I* want to make, and you will NOT object to it.

‘Parasocially’ refers pejoratively to autistic i.e. quintessentially male behavior. Unironically MtF troons are so autistic that they cannot fathom their own autism. Nobody would use that zoomer term unless it was a genuine roastie or mentally ill troon trying hard to emulate roasties.

Companies patent anything and everything they can get away with. Few are ever enforced, have intent to enforce, or would be successful in an attempt to enforce. Namco never issue C&Ds or threatened to sue anyone who used mini games in their loading screens, even against AAA devs with deep pockets to extort for licensing fees. They knew it was unenforceable and never tried to test it in court.

I think they just patented it so nobody else would patent it and start enforcing it
>>
>>561406530
Because nobody patented this shit
>>
>>561408053
most of these have prior art by some other game, so none would hold water in court
>>
>>561408061
Patent trolls are whole different story, they only exist to extort fees from companies. The last thing they want to do is actually go to court, though. They want a nominal nuisance fee to make them go away. In the rothschild case they even tried to voluntarily dismiss because taking their ball and going home is better than having the patent actually invalidated.
>>561408284
There's also extensive prior art, Dota 2 had a fleshed out system for years before Apex even began development

This appears to be a system-level evaluation or a post-mortem note written by an AI (or an observer of an AI interaction) to document a performance failure.
In the context of software development and AI collaboration, this is a "mea culpa" acknowledging that the human provided all the necessary context (the "source of truth"), but the AI failed to process that information correctly.
Deconstruction of the Statement
* The Context: The user followed "best practices" for prompting by providing the global context (the whole codebase) and the local context (the specific snippet).
* The Problem: Despite having all the data required to solve the issue, the AI likely hallucinated, lost track of dependencies, or provided a broken solution.
* The Admission: It explicitly clears the user of "prompting error" and places the technical debt/error solely on the model's logic or context window limitations.
Why this happens (The Technical "Why")
Even when you provide a full codebase, AI models can struggle with:
* Attention Drift: In very large files, the model might "forget" a definition at the top of the file while looking at a snippet at the bottom.
* Logic Contradiction: The model might default to "standard" coding patterns that actually conflict with your specific, custom architecture.
* Over-optimization: Trying to fix a local snippet without accounting for how that change ripples through the rest of the shared codebase.
Synthesis & Confidence
* Confidence Score: 0.95
* Key Caveat: Without seeing the specific code failure this refers to, I can't diagnose the exact bug, but the statement itself is a classic "Error Log" summary of a failed AI-assisted debugging session.
Would you like me to review the specific codebase and snippet where these failures occurred to see if I can provide a more stable solution?

best way was making from scratch, so you naturally keep your scope small. once you start messing with plugins your project grows and grows until you are making a game that would take 30 people 5 years to finish, and you are doing it solo... and you have no skills.

Artists were gatekeepers and the best material for learning were half a century old (or older) books that are so dry and frankly unhelpful they've become memes.
HOWEVER that is changing and I've noticed like since the covid lockdowns there's so much material online now to learn. Like the quality of like blender tutorials and shit has massively improved.

I need to make $20k with a game by the end of this year.
How feasible is it?
>>
as a pvp player it's almost impossible to enjoy singleplayer games again. they are just too easy. or obviously rigged in a way to beat you. as a pvp player you are used to intelligent opponents reacting in infinite different ways based on situational awareness.
>>

>>
>>561425294
Making $20,000 from a game by the end of this year is possible, but highly challenging and far from a guarantee. It requires a strategic approach, significant marketing efforts, and often a bit of luck. While only about 20% of indie games break even in their first year, with the rest often remaining in the red, a top 1/3 of games perform well, with some exceeding $50,000, and a small percentage hitting over $200k.
>>
i start to form a new belief about gamedev that if you can't envision your game before even working on it, you can't envision it while you are making it.
basically coming up with a story, environment, concept art, characters etc. upfront (even for sandbox games) is the first proof that your project will work out. it's the first test to see if you really have the creative juice it takes.

Fortnite was never going to last forever. Why oh why didn't Tim seriously invest in other larger sources of revenue? His entire business model has been to subsidize everything with Fortnite. Tim is very active on twitter and responds to small accounts all the time so there's no way he doesn't know what problems people have with their store.

I need to practice urgency. Not just in counting down the estimated time I have left (162 days now) but urgency minute-to-minute. I'd wake up at 6am and then not get to work by 10 and not even go to the gym in the meantime. I take 3 hours lunch breaks. My timed 5 hours of work often stretch for 12+ hours and I feel like I've been working all day even though the stopwatch says lol no. At least this morning I should start work by 9.
Still trying to fix a major physics problem. It feels "sticky", like it's going to be a pain in the ass to fix and it's going to create a web of other problems that are going to be a pain in the ass to deal with down the line.

>My timed 5 hours of work often stretch for 12+ hours
Everyone works like this, almost every single job out there is 2-4h of work stretched out over 8-9h so your 5h is very in line. You should stop counting hours and start counting deliverables because hours will not tell you how far along you are or how much progress you are making
>>
>>561437967
You're right, I'm aware of the limits of measuring time but it's at least an objective metric. I don't know how to value "mitigated fps drop on min-spec config" vs "added new weapon" vs "changed upgrade prices, progression feels more satisfying"
>>
>>561438274
>it's at least an objective metric
That's where you're wrong because of the things you said after it, how can you know what you're doing is progress if you don't know what constitutes as progress?
You probably have a design doc with an mvp, take 30min listing all the components required to create the mvp and block out the time you're willing to spend on them. This gives you the value of each component. When you start working on one of the components divide it up into smaller components in the same way, link dependencies between subcomponents and rank them based on time/difficulty. You now have metric that's closer to reality than spend x hours will eventually produce result by y time somehow.

Come with an example as per the requirements I originally set up. A fragile, bug-ridden mess does not qualify.

There's thousands of them on itch. Either giving away their music for free/credit or charging basically nothing for full commercial licenses (one of the top results in the music section is someone selling 80 tracks for $10). Just poking around now and a lot of them have a note on the page with contact info for custom work.
>>
>>561455241
This is true. There are many musicians but very few places for that music to go. I could make a music track in an evening but a game would take years. I know so many people with music as a hobby.
But unlike art as a hobby, you can just shove music into most things with a lot less work than art does.

When I look for a music studio to cover music for me, I expect them to charge much less than other stuff like art.

I’ll try and be as thorough as I can.
Basically, I’m trying to implement sliding into Unity. You know how the Character Controller has a Slope limit? If you are on a slope above it, you must slide down. Unfortunately, you either stick to it or drift on any incline, which bleeds into flat ground.
When you don’t drift, you stick. When you don’t stick, you drift. See this?

It takes longer to learn but pays dividends over the lifetime of a project. Unity and Godot let you get stuff on the screen quicker but you waste tons of time building shit that just comes out of the box in Unreal. Beginners don't have the patience to RTFM so they bounce off and go for the quicker dopamine Unity/Godot give you.

>I don't use a Rigidbody because that's fucking terrible for movement in this system.
The most streamlined way to get your character to react to the world is via a rigidbody; this lets you use Physics Mats like >>561461539 suggested.

If you really can't use rigidbodies with your current setup, one solution could be to have a specific collider for your slopes, and if your character's collider hits that collider you translate your character along the current direction, multiplied by an arbitrary value. You can use oncollisionstay to check if your character's collider is still touching the slope's collider.

godot/gdscript question:
how can I rotate a RigidBody3D's linear_velocity based on its local axes?

nta but every fucking time with this shit.
>>
>>561471856
Don't insult yourself — here's the short way.

If you want to rotate the velocity by the body's local rotation (i.e., expressed in local axes), use the body's global_transform.basis (or transform.basis) to convert between local and global space.

Examples:

- To get local velocity (world local):
```
var local_vel = global_transform.basis.xform_inv(linear_velocity)
```

- To set velocity from a local vector (local world):
```
linear_velocity = global_transform.basis.xform(local_local_vel)
```

- To rotate the current velocity around a local axis by angle (keeps magnitude):
```
var axis_local = Vector3(0,1,0) # local Y axis
var axis_world = global_transform.basis.xform(axis_local).normalized()
linear_velocity = linear_velocity.rotated(axis_world, angle)
```

- Or rotate a local velocity then apply to world:
```
var local_vel = global_transform.basis.xform_inv(linear_velocity)
local_vel = local_vel.rotated(Vector3(0,1,0), angle) # rotate in local space
linear_velocity = global_transform.basis.xform(local_vel)
```

Use xform/xform_inv on the Basis to convert between spaces; rotate in whichever space you prefer.

thanks josie/grok

I don't really follow? Do you want to rotate the direction or the velocity? The velocity is just a vector quantity that can either be positive or negative.

If you're retarded, blow it on a new car and other luxury purchases. If you aren't you set aside an emergency fund, pay off outstanding debt (whose interest exceeds a conservative annual yield, e.g. student loans, credit cards), and put the rest in investment vehicles that match your risk tolerance and long-term objectives. Half a million isn't enough to be financially independent but it's a solid head start

When you're writing code there's an objective way to determine whether it works or doesn't work and you can define a series of steps to get from not working to working. If you have a requirement like "create ambient music for this town that evokes feelings in the listener which match the general aesthetic" there's basically infinite ways to approach it and no way to define success or failure beyond "I'll know it when I hear it".

basically I'm just trying to make a hacky approximation of the Magnus effect, so that a RigidBody3D in flight curves off to a defined direction by a defined amount; pic is an example of what I mean that I just grabbed off wikipedia (this isn't a soccer/sport game, but it's the same principle)
my original idea was:
>instanced object is launched into air with its local -Z being forwards
>at instantiation/launch, calculate direction and strength of effect
>rotate local Z axis at launch to desired direction
>rotate local X axis every physics frame by desired strength
but changing the rotation of the object itself turned out to not affect the direction of its flight, and I can't figure out how else I'd do it since I'm still getting the hang of 3D transforms

You can get a pretty good approximation of the effect using the same approach as a homing projectile. Take current location and target location at launch. Define direction vector at start. At a fixed update speed, calculate the vector between current and target location and rotate projectile direction towards that vector. Tweak with max rotation speed and acceleration to taste.

Time management is no different than financial budgeting. You have so many hours in a day, commitments that obligate spending some amount of time, and it's your choice how to spend the rest. Motivation shouldn't be what drives you day to day, it's what determines your overarching objectives (6mo, 1y, 5y plan etc.). Discipline and routine is what keeps things moving forward. Step one is taking an audit of your available time, step two is creating a realistic plan that allows you to achieve your goals within some timespan, step three is executing. Whether you have 30 mins or 3 hours to commit per day, show up and commit. If you only have 30 mins, create a project with a scope that you can realistically complete with that time.

Remember, movement comes from the hips, shoulders, and spine first, and it moves out to the limbs, this is why people do figure drawing with lines of action and contraposto

If you just move the limbs because the limbs should move you end up with this boxy robotic movement

Yes they are.

I see her in my mind's eye all the time. Tall, Red hair, Prominent front teeth, amazing body freckles, and prominent clavicle.

And she has that toothy elegance to her. Like I could definitely see her meticulously interior decorating a NWN house and doing fashion shows on a PW server. I've felt her aura all throughout my life. She is my co-creator. The worlds are at our fingertips. I am Shiva and she is Shakti. Proverbs 8 was a bit of a hint / glimpse. If you read it, it sounds like her talking about being there with me while I was creating.

When I hold her chin in my fingertips, I caress all of creation.

Who needs engines?
Whether using or making them, it feels like overrated tech
Real chads make their games from scratch with NO engine, whether existing or in-house, and just YOLO it. It's how they did in the NES and SNES era before engines were a "thing"

Be honest lads
Which is more worth it
Indie gamedev (any format, you lads obviously know what they are since this is the gamedev thread) or indie animation (short film, feature film, "TV" (or YouTube) series, etc)?
Kinda unironically wondering if making animated shorts (in the same vein as pre-Disney-buyout Pixar shorts, perhaps even in the same retro CGI style) or w/e could be a more rewarding solo creative hobby/jobby

Seeing the discussions of artists about revshare projects, almost all of them immediately jump on this idea that they're going to get scammed.
I'd advise trying to network IRL in find the artist if you go down this route. But if you can get someone with a stellar reputation then that's awesome as well. Either way, don't expect to team up with someone nearly as passionate as you are about your project.

>>561468461
>>561468565
My experience is that most artists don't want to have to think too creatively on your project. They just want to make the art. It's your game and having placeholder art gives them a good idea of what direction of where they want to go with the project. I'm using a CC0 artpack at the moment and my artist appreciates it. It has helped my artist really understand the direction he should go it. There's strong guardrails and it helps his creativity work on the finer details rather than the overall picture.

He's not interested about deciding if an enemy is an Orc or an Ogre, he just wants to design the look of the Orcs and Ogres to his style.

A huge chunk of gamedevs are actually unemployable outside of the industry. Backend/services devs are in demand everywhere but graphics programmers, engine/tooling devs, and gameplay programmers are basically entry level devs at real companies. Gamedevs don't even know how to write tests
>>
>>561508473
>A huge chunk of gamedevs are actually unemployable outside of the industry.
Probably true, most people hyper focused on explicitly game development would suffer in other fields. You're either a Carmack-type or a Romero-type.

ME? I'm a Romero-type. (that's not a good thing)
>>
>>561508473
Could be true I guess I don't know where the bar is set, my experience having my start in gamedev was that I programmed circles around my peers but I technically started as an enginedev so.

yeah they're retards

The average vidya software engineer who writes something lower level than scripting is lightyears ahead of the average gigaretard web dev or whatever the industry is full of these days.

>Gamedevs don't even know how to write tests
tests are for retards who like wasting time, not know how to write them is an efficiency bonus. Free yourself from the yoke of agile faggotry

OP is misunderstanding the paper or maybe not and he's just spreading misinformation. OP is also a pedophile.
Anyway it isn't going to make massive models fit in a tiny amount of ram so its not going to change anything in regards to the ram crisis. This is a quantization strategy for the kvcache only. It might speed up generation time and for local users you'll probably be able to have a larger context size.
