>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

For some reason I cannot help but think of it like a remix of "you are dead" from Total Distortion, except replace the obvious.

Thought you were straight? Guess what? You're not!
(You are gay, gay, gay)

(You are gay, gay, gay)
Your heart has skipped a beat and your brain is foggy
You are so so g-ay

Metal Gear:
>Big Boss: Solid Snake! I've been expecting you... I am the supreme commander of the FOXHOUND unit... And... The leader of the fortress of Outer Heaven, Big Boss! I gave this mission to you, a rookie, thinking I could use you to fool the rest of the world... But you were too good. You went too far! Solid Snake! I'm not going down alone. I'm taking you with me! Prepare to die!
Snake's Revenge:
>Big Boss: You destroyed Metal Gear 1 and made me a cyborg. Now I want revenge.
Metal Gear 2:
>Big Boss: The nightmares? They never go away, Snake. Once you've been on the battlefield, tasted the exhilaration, the tension... it all becomes part of you. Once you've awakened the warrior within... it never sleeps again. You crave ever bigger tensions, ever bigger thrills. As a mercenary, I'd think you would have realized that by now. You care nothing for power, or money, or even sex. The only thing that satisfies your cravings is war! All I've done is give you a place for it. I've given you a reason to live.

>Melee
God that takes me back, I loved that game as a kid.
>Vermintide II
Didn't like it that much if I'm being honest, its an okay friendslop game but it has a lot of weird fuckery behind the scenes with China and Red Shell.
>Super Metroid
Never played but everyone who loves the Metroid series cooms about this classic.
>Morrowind
Probably my most beloved and nostalgic game, I'm donig a play through right now. I wish more RPGs would just lean into a more simulationist or mechanical sandbox styles of play. I know that almost all the way to break Morrowind are unintended or left as a "reward" for players who stick around long enough but I don't think Bethesda really understood how beautiful this game really was because of that sandboxing.
Also if you want something like Morrowind, I've heard that Tainted Grail really follows that Morrowind design philosophy, but I haven't played it.
>>
>>561959289
I envy you fags that got to play Morrowind.
Also yeah Tainted Grail is okay. Very fun, through the DLC picks up the difficulty and I find myself doing poor damage with my dual weapons.
>>
>>561959397
>I envy you fags that got to play Morrowind.
What's stopping you from just buying it an playing now?
>>
>>561959525
Nothing. What stops me from playing it is that it crashes. After around 2 hours in, just as I meet Caius Cosadès's abs and begin to explore kwama mines to look for easy prey and bandits, the game crashes and return to the desktop. No explanation, no log, nothing, just an inescapable doom that instantly stop any progress I might do or try. Trying to hide? Nope. Trying to run? Nope! The game always, inescapably crashes.
And I did play it back then but I had no bloody idea what I was doing so I just killed everyone.
>>
>>561959041
its a game term meaning "killed everything/everyone". in this context, i mean i completely eliminated the entire first "level".
>>
>>561959908
Not that, it's the "might of wiped". I'm an ESL so I'm not sure, but shouldn't it be "might have wiped"?

I swear I'm close to making a video on how to P-rank this stage just because every single time I see someone else they overengineer 99% of kills
First room, cannon the providence, then whiplash the core. That's every drone dead. Kill the maurice and cleanup, it takes like 5 seconds.
Second room just sawblade?
Third room cannon providence, sharpshooter + railgun maurices, only a guttertank and some fodder left.

Like I don't know I guess each person has their own style and all but with the kind of effort the fucking stage requires as it is I'm amazed at how people overcomplicate things.

No, that's a wood cube with quartered maple logs so it must have taken some effort (and a lot of wood) to create. Maybe he wanted to build more advanced wooden stuff with planks and stuff but didn't have a saw yet.

VS has a huge selection of blocks, many even lower tech tier than cobble.
Aesthetics are only limited by how much effort you are willing to put into it.

Here's an overview of early game (pre-metal age) blocks

Very grindy, classless MMO with very interconnected crafting system.
I heard it is more like Ever Quest or some other pre-WoWification of MMOs. But I have never played WoW and the only MMO I seriously played that was a tab spammer was Tera, so dunno.
It is fun for me though. Like a very combat oriented Wurm.

I got it on the last winter sale. What bothers me the most is probably the AAA writing, feels like the game really wants you to care about and bond with these npcs and have these heartfelt or impactful moments, even when it makes no sense and there is not enough buildup. Its some teenager shit.

Gameplay wise, its as fun as GTA to roam the city, customize your char and fuck around, but all quests, save for some main quest ones, starts to feel the same after a while. Dialogue and roleplay wise, your build and choices seems to matter very little to the story, and action wise, it hurts gameplay variety.

Fucking Christ. Didn't have internet since friday and it took them this long to fix it.
Anyways, as the other anons mentioned, it's a deep mine in an area rich with copper. I've hit 2 deposits and potentially detected a 3rd just by digging straight down and haven't exhausted neither of them so far.
Plus I just love building roads, it gives me the feeling of taming the wilderness. Also parts of this island are very hilly so it's nice to just have a predetermined path I can take to most places on the island without having to hold the jump key or think about my route.
Got a bit bored so made a rough plan of which POIs I have on the island and how I want to connect them. The Tree Shrine is from better ruins and is basically a huge tree in the middle of a ruin plus a half of the flatland around it are temporally unstable, so my headcanon is that my character would have both revere and dread that place.
Plus once I get into the bronze age I want to start building a sailing boat to explore south, so I'll need a location to build and dock it later down the line.
With most of my mine being dug now I'm thinking of maybe also adding a stone quarry somewhere along the mountainside

Also just want to double down on how pretty this game looks.
Turning down the resolution a bit and cranking up the view distance makes exploration so much fun. Climbing the top of a mountain and seeing this huge lake beyond it feels amazing. And the lower resolution making things in the distance hard to make out adds to the desire to go there and check it out.
Especially ruins are fun, because you can barely tell if it even is a structure or you're just seeing things. Really adds tot he mystique and the vague horror elements Vintage Story has

Cute. I think this is very close to that sweetspot of not being too detailed to be realistically built in survival mode but also not being a shitbox. I always struggle striking that balance.

I'll keep saying it every time:
It's Minecraft but good, unless you're not part of the very specific target audience it has, then it's Minecraft but boring
But yes, this has been a Minecraft mod, until the dev decided he doesn't like the direction Minecraft is taking and got sick of having to constantly fix his mod when it got broken by an update.
>>562176152
Uh, that's cool.
Too be fair though, I'm playing with some made up self imposed rules that limit map use to a bare minimum, because I think navigating with landmarks and getting lost in the wilderness is fun.
What I am excited about, however, is finding out that apparently there are books you can write in, even if they are locked behind lots of tech I don't have yet.
I've been thinking of having some sort of "gaming journal" to note down what I did in a session and what my plans for the next one are, and doing that in-game sounds like a lot of fun

>not being too detailed to be realistically built in survival mode
Beams and chiseling really are the secret sauce to VS aesthetics.

Beams are annoying in survival, even in creative. 1.22 should make that a lot better with the addition of crowbar. But if you're willing to deal with beams, you can even use them to build smooth custom roofs at any angle. Or any other smooth shape beyond the voxel grid.
Multiblock chiseling is something I like to do slowly over time, adding more and details. Not even chiseling shapes, but mixing blocks. It's really great when you have brick textures bordering something else like cobble/fanned/drystone.
Another detailing thing I'm considering is chiseling random depth into cobblestone. You know, inset some of the stones by 1 voxel. Something that you can easily do over time as you pass the building, but I'm not sure if it would even look good.

If you like the medieval house style, you can make decent survival builds quite easily. Just keep the basic idea in mind: stone ground floor + overhanging wood/plaster upper floor + overhanging slanted roof. Use beams to frame things and add detail to large solid surfaces.

Yep, here is something I've built on an older save, and using chiseling to mix block and add some depth to the walls was great.
I've been looking at that menu screen for a while now and it's definitely something I want to copy as soon as I can (I'm still in the pre-anvil copper age and don't intend to advance until 1.22 stable). Also the simple houses in Ostriv look kinda neat, I think of copying one of those, especially with the the huge oven they've got inside.
But yeah, I've seen people do crazy shit like making whole buildings diagonal to the voxel grid or detailing on the finest chisel resolution and that's just way too much for me, to the point where I'd stop playing the game, because I would softlock myself out of any meaningful progress on account of needing a month for any building, I'd need.

We're currently in the release candidate stage. Looking at past major updates, it usually takes a bit over a month to go from rc to stable.
Though in my limited experience, release candidates are usually fine to play, if you intend to start a new game anyways. The only reason I'm waiting, is because converting my 1.21 save over to 1.22 isn't advised until the stable release.
>>
>>562179250
Oof those roof edges undersides. You really gotta do something with them. At least put upside down brick stairs on the outer ones and full brick blocks on the inner ones.

Getting the best tools in Vintage Story:

STONE AGE
>find flint and sticks
>knap stone knife
>gather dry hay
>knap stone axe
>fell trees
>make firewood

COPPER AGE
>dig a charcoal pit
>fill it with firewood, set it on fire, cover with earth, wait to get charcoal
>knap stone shovel
>find clay
>form tool molds, a crucible and anvil mold out of clay
>build pit kilns
>fill the pit kilns with unfired clay products, layers of hay, sticks and fuel to fire your clay
>find surface copper nuggets or pan for copper
>use your charcoal to smelt the copper in crucible
>cast copper into simple metal tools
>mine surface copper deposits with pickaxe
>cast a copper anvil

BRONZE AGE
>use prospecting pick to search for metals of bronze alloys (normal tin bronze, black bronze, bismuth bronze, etc)
>ratio and smelt bronze alloys
>use it to cast simple tools
>smith more complex tools on anvil
>upgrade to cast bronze anvil

IRON AGE
>prospect for hematite, magnetite, etc - iron ores
>smelt flint into calcined flint chunks
>build a millstone to grind it into powder
>use the powder with your clay to make fireclay bricks
>fire the bricks in a pit kiln
>use them to build fireclay bloomeries
>shove your iron nuggets and charcoal into them
>get dirty iron blooms out of bloomeries
>reheat them and smith the slag out of them, shape them to iron ingots
>make iron tools

STEEL AGE
>smith iron anvil in two parts
>find flux like borax
>grind it to powder
>reheat your anvil pieces, apply flux, weld them together
>build a pulverizer for smashing tougher rocks into powder (also requires mechanical water/windmill engineering to power it)
>find/prospect for quartz and bauxite
>smash them into powder
>add the powder to your fireclay mix to make more heat-resistant refractory bricks
>build a historically accurate cementation furnace to carburize iron
>after a week of firing the furnace with a metric fuckton of coal, receive blister steel
>smith the slag out of blister steel to get steel ingots

Some more delayed blogposting to bump the thread.
From some limited prospecting I managed to do so far, my home island pretty much only has copper. There are some traces of Bismuth and Sphalerite, but it looks like the hotspot is somewhere out into the ocean and I don't want to fuck with that. So Took my raft to the continent up north and built this temporary shelter on the beach. As a base of operation for further prospecting.
Nothing too promising thus far, but there's still plenty of flatlands to prospect up here. Plus having a mine up here and having to ship the ore home by raft does sound quite fun thematically
>>562181080
Yeah, those are always kinda rough. If I built this today I probably would have looked for a block with matching texture to chisel into a slope. Or maybe slap on some beams to hide the underside. I'm sure I'm not the first person looking for a solution for this particular problem so I assume there is some inspo out there on how to deal with this

>fill the pit kilns with unfired clay products, layers of hay, sticks and fuel to fire your clay
I've only recently learned that you can use peat instead of firewood for this. That's really nice, because up to this point I assumed peat is only useful for higher level stuff I've never gotten to and I basically ignored it
>>
>>562188942
Yeah you can basically use any fuel for any purpose as long as it burns hot enough. I do all my cooking with peat because all my firewood goes into charcoal pits.
You can even smelt some soft metals with peat/firewood and so on.
In lategame crafting, temperature becomes the critical factor that requires increasingly elaborate furnace setups.

By the way, this is the real life cementation furnace design Vintage Story uses. At least I think it's the same.

The block building isn't obviously as detailed, but the principle is the same: You neatly pack iron ingots in charcoal stuffed inside stone coffers that are sitting on firegrates and the whole furnace is fueled with coal from a pit below it.

Beehive kilns can also use peat (and firewood). They also don't need full stacks of fuel to a fully fire the clay. In the case of peat you only need 9 stacks of 24.
I also though I was being clever by using peat to heat up a crucible to 900°C then switching to coal, but I did some testing and it only really saves one coal per batch.
Maybe two if the batch is huge and nothing if the batch is small enough. The peat also heats up slower making the smelting take longer. It's not really worth it.
>>
>>562197372
If you know your batch is just a tiny bit short of your usual fuel, then it won't take much effort to start the fire with 1 peat and immediately shove the rest of the coal in after it's lit.
Using 4 or 5 coal per batch is a 25%/20% difference, worth it if you're running low and can't be arsed to constantly deforest everything for charcoal

Very. Bloomery is a block. Well, two blocks.
Beehive kiln is a big beehive shaped brick building, similar to the steel cementation furnace.
It's got 3x3x3 interior space for firing a ton of ceramics at once.

It can fire clay in 4 different colors.
Far less micromanaging for mass production.
Also better fuel efficiency I think.

Wurm Online is a lot better, but I'm extremely intimidated by it: I don't want to join a server and be instantly drown in stuff, and I fear starting to play a bit alone, managed to farm some wheat, and come back 30 minutes later and find my farm burned down with tags calling me names and people wiping their asses with my curtains.

>Wurm Online is a lot better,
Mate. I posted a pic of my time in Wurm Online from when I blogposted about it two years ago.
I know how grindy it can be.
I started playing Wurm Online on the Epic cluster, which is full loot PvP.
That was back in 2011 or so. Spent three or four years playing. Over 3k hours. Did a shitton of raids and several sieges. It was intense.
>and I fear starting to play a bit alone
Yeah. In the Freedom clusters, is deed it or loose it. But I have stablished friends with a 55x55 deed and plenty of space. I'm just afraid of the amount of grind I would have to do again, to the point I'm useful or can do fun stuff. Even if I have a fully manned town with access to all the priest's skill boosts, food and water, mineral access and good quality tools, armor and weapons.

I'm craving a certain type of game.

>works with a controller (Steam Deck)
>no gacha mechanics
>dungeon crawler preferably
>roguelite/like or not
>has actual gameplay (not interested in jerkoff material)
>good value (multiple plays encouraged/rewarded)
>single player or two person co-op

Games I like: Isaac, Balatro, Slay the Spire 2, Mewgenics, Tunic, Darkest Dungeon.

Any recommendations? What I'd really like is an olschool style game like Wizardry but those seem to be few and far between these days (or else require KBM).

Siralim Ultimate, Labyrinth of Touhou 2 or 3 (2 has double the content, 3 has better balance, dungeon design and QoL), Path of the Abyss, Potato Flowers in Full Bloom, Tower of Mask probably plays good enough with controller, still a great game so I'm mentioning it anyway

>>
>>562283153
I last played it half a decade ago, but it was a reasonably enjoyable XCOM/Diablo/Rebel Galaxy fusion, though really light on non-procgen content at the time. It's clearly not big-budget, but it's earnest. The big, BIG problem was that it was unbearably slow. Every single animation was about twice as long as it needed to be, and the movement speed was atrocious for how big the maps were. Combined with the very long prologue sequence to get into the actual game, starting a new game was like trying to chew through a car tire.
Maybe, hopefully, it's been streamlined in the past 6 years.

>>562284657
>The big, BIG problem was that it was unbearably slow.
I didn't find it slow in the way you describe, but it IS a very lengthy and grindy game.
Ground combat is fun if you bump all difficulty options to max. Especially put friendly fire on because that makes positioning more tactical.

For some reason it's described like this
>Stellar Tactics is a nostalgic return to the excitement and wonder of classic RPGs with a compelling narrative, strategic squad-based ground combat, and rewarding open-world space exploration.
Excitement and wonder? Yeah, no. A good RPG I can't put down and have to play every day until the end. Stellar Tactics is easy to play for a while, move to another game, then continue next year.

The sheer number of everyday item management tasks (salvaging, repairing, crafting, etc) tied to increase-by-use skill system also felt grindy enough that I made a bunch of ahk scripts to cope with all the repetitive clicking.

Darwin's Paradox was definitely far from perfect. If you hate the trial-and-error challenge of cinematic platformers you won't like this, even as a fan of the genre it pissed me off at times. But it's got soul, and there's at least variety

Think I'm gonna specialise in Cooking and Gardening/Angling for cooking ingredients. With a side of Animal Breeding. Will have to look into a guild or make some contacts to get direct and cheap access to some intermediaries that are a must. As the crafting system is extremely intertwined between almost all skills.
For combat I'm gonna try Necromancy and Animal Handling(animal pets). Will be very very dependant on my summons staying alive so I will see if I later I may switch to Staffs.

Most of the update is about finishing the Sindrian quest
You can change Smods on ships (big cost)
You can summon extra fleets from military bases (big cost)
They added a way to lose the game
Bunch of buffs and nerfs, midline looks like the big winner
>>
>>562314625
specifically the big nerfs are to onslaught XIV (5 more DP) and anubis(nerfed its special), i think
Voidblaster got cut in half but the AI won't shoot it into shields anymore
Dominator, Champion, and Conquest all got nice buffs
and the carrier skill makes fighters tanky instead of the carrier faster
>>
>>561919018
Even though there's whole alt acts 2 and 3 missing, balance is where feels most underbaked.
Also act 3 feels kinda phoned in.

About fucking time, they were always my favorite ships, and I always tried to fit a conquest or two in my fleet
>>
>>562327561
yeah they made conquest 55 speed from 45 and hurricanes 5 OP cheaper
on top of nerfs to onslaught and paragon i think its sitting pretty

i have only ever played midline so its not like much changed for me, maybe i'll start using champion again

Prospecting sure is tedious, especially up here, away from my main base and with the days still being really short.
But I think I've zeroed in on some hotspots that I'll try to tap into to hopefully have some bronze ingots in time for the forge reword in 1.22 to hit.
Never mind I still need to build a forge building and don't really have a good space for it in or around my main base.
>>
>>562341102
It's not all that tedious if you get it down to a routine. I still think you're prospecting with a pretty bad method. Do understand what the density search results actually mean? What do you do with them?

It looks a bit more chaotic than it is. I go with a grid of sampling every other chunk and go down to every chunk once I think I'm close to a local maximum of whatever it is I'm searching. Plus some random samples from places with lots of exposed rock since those are basically free.
Maybe I could lower the resolution even more and I probably will if I ever decide to survey a large area, though so far most readings I took had at least one ore I'm interested in and I could just follow that to the source
>Do understand what the density search results actually mean?
yeah, I do
>It's not all that tedious if you get it down to a routine
For sure, but short days difficult terrain and/or constant fear of wolves make it hard to get into the flow.

The original temtem kinda really fucking sucked. It required knowing the mechanics to an absurd degree and had several tiers of shiny which had a huge advantage competitively.
For a game that wanted to solve the problems of competitive pokemon, it made building a team literally impossible due to requiring on average over 100 hours per creature. In comparison I could build a competitively viable pokemon team in about 20 hours. You know why? Because in pokemon about half of the IV don't matter for a specific pokemon. So you only need a few perfect or near perfect. In temtem, you want all your IV to be perfect because they have a significantly higher effect per point than in pokemon. A perfect speed mastione will be faster than 95% of average speed temtem. A perfect attack ukama deals enough damage to one turn ko most average IV temtem. And guess what? the super shiny (umbra) have every stats perfected and they're a 1/20000 rate. Roughly 3 times rarer than shinies. But don't worry you can get super shiny radars which break after 300 uses but increase your rate drastically to 1/2000 with an increase to 1/400 and 1/200 at 100 uses and 200 uses respectively. How do you buy it? By grinding regular shinies. How do you grind regular shinies? They're a 1/2000 in the wild but you can use regular radars to boost your rate, how do you get regular radar? By paying hundreds of post game currency that you can ONLY get by doing dailies and weeklies and most of them are rewards for WINNING competitive matches, matches that you can't win because everyone has umbras which have perfect stats so they have a massive advantage over you constantly. My umbra zenoreth took 190 hours over 4 months of daily grind to get AND IT'S ONE OF THE EASIEST UMBRA TO GET!!
The game was pay 2 win as shit.
Temtem swarm just looks like their version of pokemon rumble.

Of course prospecting is gonna be tedious if you're doing it 13 times (I counted) in one spot where one reading would have sufficed.
Whatever is in the circled areas doesn't need a dozen readings.

It's better to not think of prospecting as ore hunting, but merely initial preparation for it.
Don't even bother looking at the readings you get while prospecting. Just do it quickly and move on. Do it on the side when you're out exploring and doing other stuff. Won't feel so tedious that way. Study the bigger picture later at home. Decide and mark areas for exploratory mining or directions to expand your prospecting into.
You want to cover as much ground as possible with density search. Not to try uselessly pinpoint the exact centers of ore-rich areas.

>It looks a bit more chaotic than it is
I'm just saying you sample way too often.
You don't *have* to be methodical about your sampling frequency if you don't want, it's just much easier that way. Either way the useful resolution of density search hardly dips below 200 meters. Once you've determined roughly a hectare-sized area where to go caving and dig vertical mineshafts, you're set.

>lots of exposed rock since those are basically free
>short days difficult terrain and/or constant fear of wolves
Wut. There is no safer place than a prospecting foxhole. Take a bed with you and you can even sleep in them.
Just shovel straight down to rock, dig two 4-tile horizontal dirt tunnels, poke 3 rocks with propick, done. Climb up with your rope ladder and pull it up after you. Or pillar up with your recently acquired dirt, but I assume that's too too unimmersive and minecrafty for your style.
This is not exactly "free" but it won't cost you anything more than about 20 shovel durability.

i think temtem the idea to give fans a pokemon mmo just came out too late when the a lot of people had lost interest in the idea, and mmo's in general had really declined. it didn't help that the monster designs and characters design were shit.

Ok ok let me fire up my test backup of my current world and so some debug stuff to explain why it's pointless to go autistic with density searching.

This pic shows all bismuth ore under me in 256 radius, taken from high up in the air looking straight down.
The minimap shows my 100x100m prospecting results for bismuthinite, with a circle to show the rendered area.

I'm roughly in the center of the ore-rich area, definitely well in the yellow zone, not that it matters as you can see. There's literally over 2k ore deposits.
Can you tell the difference in ore deposit density between the yellow and red areas? You can't, because they're the same. The main difference is deposits deep in red would have poor ore while the yellows go up to medium.
Does it matter if you pinpoint the exact center of an ore-rich area like this? Of what use would that information be? Hitting ores that spawn in smaller veins is down to luck either way, you either need to do caving (exposes lot of rock surface with little digging effort) or dig multiple vertical shafts (free sunlight to keep the monsters away) until you get lucky. You can also do node prospecting while tunneling down, but ultimately, digging multiple vertical shafts probably costs less pickaxe durability and rope ladders make it cheap and easy.

Prospecting mainly just lets you know which ores you can expect in a given region. From there it's much more important to know what kind of deposits different ores form so you know what it takes to actually find them.

Still enjoying Siralim Ultimate. I got 3 teams (one is a WIP): Cleric Griffins who spam buffs which I'm using for boss fights. Windrunner bugs for shredding boss-less floors. And my WIP team is a Monk Clutcher that's gonna be absolutely devious once I get it set up.
>>
>>562361440
Why?
Mining is not really that different from Minecraft, except easier in a sense. Some ores form much bigger deposits that are really easy to hit with vertical shafts.
I think people just get stuck in the prospecting autism and then get disappointed when it did nothing to help them get any closer to ores.

No. All the good pokemon-likes are games that don't try to be pokemon. Pokemon is a lucky accident with a lot of marketing. They are not particularly good games. The balance is completely broken, the grind is rather violent, a lot of the gameplay is just go from point a to point b with either a stupidly high encounter rate or over 20 trainers to fight and all of them use the same 5 pokemons. The game loves to throw at you completely useless moves that you should never ever use and until gen 6, a lot of pokemons had only 1 or 2 learned move in their pool forcing you to use tm which were single use until gen 5 (black/white). Having 2 versions with virtually no difference is also a huge marketing scam. Only a few of the games actually has a meaningful difference at some point and it's generally only one or two area at most.
If it wasn't pokemon, it wouldn't get a pass for being a relatively mediocre rpg with a ton of filler creatures and a few interesting ones. If I ask you what is pokemon 840? 591? Exactly. 840 is the apple dragon from ss and 591 is AMOGUS!?
>>
The mining gameplay loop is probably one of the only enjoyable things about Vintage Story.
>>
>>562362193
Some aspects of it are down to luck, like in any gameplay mechanic ever. Skill is mitigating the effects of randomness. IMO VS does a good job at it, between the different ore deposit sizes/shapes, node prospecting and very limited player resources compared to Minecraft.

Yeah even Digimon struggles to this day, and Monster Rancher disappeared altogether. Yugioh survived because it's card game.

it's not that people can't make good fakemon designs, the problem is that they are too stylistically close to pokemon to be usuable without legal issues. so they end up trying to create creatures in a new style which nobody really wants.

There are still monster collecting games... But most are Japan only. Digimon is pretty much the only other big name that had an impact in the west and it's basically dead now.
A few others like yokai watch do exist but I've never seen any mention of it outside of the internet. It exist, it sold millions of copies worldwide and it has absolutely 0 cultural impact outside of Japan. Dragon quest monsters/joker has a release every 5 years or so. Smt is extremely niche outside of persona which is fairly popular. The rest is the flood of indies. Monster hunter is also considered fairly niche outside of Japan even with the rise (pun intended) in popularity that came from tri, world and ironically wilds. So the monster taming spin off (stories) is not exactly popular, the only reason I know about it is because capcom keeps spamming me about it.
I guess palworld is the only true game in that style in recent years that has an actual impact other than pokemon.
I don't really count card games in the same category even if yugioh is fairly similar because then we need to talk about magic and all the other ccg like hearthstone, shadowverse, etc. Or worse, baseball cards...
It's just a very hard genre to sell. It's also very hard to localize so a lot of publishers just don't bother.
And obviously the endless stream of varying quality indie games is worth mentioning I guess.
