It's been ages but I remember there is a spot where you can skip enemies to get gear from way later in the game and it allows you to steamroll a decent portion of early and mid game with how much stronger it makes you. Enemies also have rare drops and those tend to be very strong so farming them can often net you better equipment than base gear from the next area.
