The problem is that people rely on college classes to teach them the language. Classes are shit. The easiest way to learn is to teach yourself, because everybody has their own style and methods of learning. Maybe you’d prefer to grind kanji all day long. Or maybe you’d rather study basic grammar and improve your vocabulary through eroge (like me). Maybe you’re capable of rote memorisation, or maybe you require mnemonics to make things stick in your head. The point is that it is doable as long as you do what works best for yourself (and aren’t a lazy bastard like I used to be).Anyway, the first thing I did when deciding to tackle glorious 日本語 was teach myself the kana. It’s intimidating at first, but it can be done in just a few days. There’s an awesome site called realkana which lets you practice their sounds one column (five kana) at a time. You do the practices over and over, again and again until the kana are drilled into your memory. And then you add another column in. And then you’re done with hiragana. And then finally the katakana are drilled into your brain
