I'll take it a step further and say that Renee and Andrew have had opposite character slides. In Chapter 1, Andrew seems to be a dindu nuffin doormat who gets pushed around, but we've steadily seen that he's just as fucked up as Ashley, if not worth. Chapter 1 Mom was at best flippant and at worst evil, and certainly after Ch2 she was seen as evil. But, as we've gotten more and more details about her relationship with Douglas, her upbringing, and her life, it's so obvious that Renee is a flawed character just like everyone else. Renee is exactly how Andrew and Ashley would be as parents, if they didn't have her as their parent (if that makes sense). Renee treats Our Heroes the way Our Heroes treat everyone else. Obviously, this doesn't absolve Renee of her sins. But people who still treat her as a 1 dimensional evil manipulator are the same sort of crowd who still treats Andrew as a poor and unfortunate victim
