Just finished DQ3 HD2D as my first DQ game. Liked it a lot. Will probably dick around with it a bit more tomorrow but not sure whether I'll do the postgame stuff, from what I've heard it seems like a lot of grinding which I have 0 interest in

Is the HD2D games the definitive way of playing the first games or is the SNES/PS4/etc. versions still the preferred ones?

You honestly can't go wrong with any release*, even the NES or GBC versions.1&2 were changed much more than 3 in the HD versions to the point where they're basically totally different games. To me, they don't feel like DQ at all.They're really mediocre, terribly balanced, and feel like someone's first attempt at a JRPG, which is excusable for 1, but not so much for 2.The first game also has a lot of padding and drags on for about 10 hours longer than it should. And to clarify on the balance, in the first game one of your party members learns the strongest attack spell in the game at like level 25 and the rest of the spells she learns at 30, 40, etc. pale in comparison on top of costing her more MP, also the main character can turn into a dragon and deal stupid damage for little to no cost. 2 on the other hand from what I had played is badly balanced in the other direction where you get mauled by even the earliest encounters unless you spend a lot of time grinding, also once again the main character has dragon forms since that's like the main gimmick I guess of the games, but in 2 the forms were nerfed into the ground, they cost all of your MP and don't do much damage for it, you're better off just ignoring them so you can still cast heal and shit.idk how much 3 and 4 might have improved things, but with how bad 2 fumbled I just lost interest in the series.

Is there any kind of pity system in the Gallopolis Horse Racing for DQXI?I swear I got the 1st place reward of the Black Cup, even though I finished in 2nd place. I noticed there was some kind of dialogue after the race, but I was skipping it to try again, so I dunno if it announced something like the game taking pity on me, or maybe disqualifying a racer for some reason.Couldn't find an answer on the internet.

If I can be honest I think cutting so many monsters from DQ7R hurts the game way more than cutting the 3 islands. I'm still enjoying it way more than I did on 3DS though.

When I was a kid my dad found a copy of rocket slime ds on the bar of his local pub, he took it home and gave me it and thats how I fell in love with dragon quest. I ended up emulating Dragon quest monsters on my psp and showing kids at school how much better it was than pokemon and they called me gay and cringe. To this day the only series of games I play aside from dragon quest is the trails series.
