There's more existential dread than ever before and while games might have once been escapism offering alternative avenues of mastery for many people it is now primarily a distraction and a time-waster. Hence why the most popular game mechanics are gambling, progression and co-op.

It probably will eventually but right now all these 3d ai models look like crap. Due to the sheer size of meshes I imagine it's a lot harder to train a proper model with good topology. There's not a massive library of GOOD meshes out there for some faggot to just scrape data from either. Sketchab might be the closest but there's an extreme amount of utter dog shit on that site too so you really need manual verification.

Topology is just a measure of how good it conforms to the texture, normals distortion during animations, which is measurable. I'm sure they're training models already but just shitty doing this or they don't have the compute or some other shit or they're not even doing this yet but it's measurable so trainable.

It's hard to explain, it was hard to do for me too.
You start by checking what you want to make and planning how the hair flows then you start placing chunks. I don't think there's a shortcut. I made this 4 sided banana meshes and started to place them around the scalp
>>
>>562257615
So I extrude and combine?
>>
>>562257767
Again NTA you can extrude the entire mesh if you combine and are happy with the shape for extra depth in the end but just any 3D modelling hair tutorial will show you these steps

I got my FPS script going well, but I'm trying to fine-tune the movement. So right now, when you sprint, you aren't focused forward, you can effectively sprint in any direction while moving the camera. Since sprint doesn't last very long in this prototype, and most likely never will, should I keep sprint focused forward, or let the camera be operable and move around while sprinting? I think of it like you're simply looking behind you or to the side, without having to introduce more input keys.
What do you guys think? Pros, cons? And what about full stop when you let go of movement keys? Should there be slight momentum when let go?

Yeah that method works best the more triangles you have. You have to move vertexes around manually if you want to use less triangles. Even then the hairs I made are about 2000 triangles each. The hairs took me about 6 hours each. Maybe I'm just slow. Texturing was rather easy

Love this. I got into gamedev with the goal of meeting Eric someday. Its a silly thing.
I like to daydream about releasing my game then going to games con. Im tending to my booth and minding my own business before I see a little shimmer in the corner in my eye
>It must be nothing, I think to myself as I push thots away from grabbing my joystick
As the night goes on, those quick shimmers continue before turning to a bright light.
A silhouette it looks to be approaching me. Is this it? Is this the end?
I begin to sweat. Its not just regular sweat, no. Its a cold sweat. The exact opposite of the warm sweat I felt from the groupie thots body heat just moment before.
And then he appeared
Levi Jacket, cool expression. Everything I ever dreamed of. Eric Barone in the flesh.
>Oh man. Did I get my booth number wrong? Please don't tell me this is where Haunted Chocolatier was supposed to be set up. Fuck
Before I can fall into a full-blown panic, Eric reaches his hand out for a fist bump
>Hey man! Glad I was able to catch you at your booth! Just wanted to say I really dig your game, it's actually inspired me to restart Chocolatier from the ground up. Not sure I could compete with you as it is.
Wow! An actual compliment from my very own hero®
Dreams really do come true. I shoo the thots away and we get to talking.
Idle chit chat turns into game dev discussion, almost as if we were hosting our own /agdg/ in real life.

Next thing I know, Eric is offering me to help on his game! We're officially a team.
Years pass, and HC is released. After the release celebration I return home. And what is awaiting me on my porch? A small parcel.
I open it up, and its a matching Levi Jacket. Im officially part of the club. But whats this? Something in the pocket?
I reach inside to find a note
>Thanks anon for helping with HC. You were my side kick at one point, but now I'm glad to call you a friend.
Pic rel is me reading the note that Eric left for me

Is there a name for the method? I don't know. The hair you want is rather complex. Break it down first. Place first big clumps to get the shape and they add thinner strands to get the messiness. I would give it a try but I'm trying to finish a client's work.

13.3 years left. Yeah, I did a review of my expenses in March and if I keep being in the red as much as I was in March, my savings are going to run out in August 2039. March was a fluke obviously, but the balance lifted my mood, before it dawned on me that in 14 years it'll be 2040. 14 years is from Skyrim to now!
Yesterday I started on a big customization system and I don't want to jinx it but it's progressing really well. I have too much experience to get my hopes up so early, but I think it's not unrealistic I could get it in a shippable state in a week or so.

Reading through waves of llm playing an interrogator, more expensive version of the model works quite well. Iteration by iteration fewer questions remain unanswered.

Why is it that artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers are willing to speak up about the big companies devaluing their work, and try to fight their respective mediums being turned into disposable sludge, yet gamedevs fully embrace the enshittification of their industry?

Game idea:
A cool summer day, you can feel the breeze in your hair. It's got to be like, the middle of July with weather like this. The sun is straight up beaming. Warm day. You can smell someone is grilling down the road, there's that propane smell. Summer is here. Hell yeah. The music is like, kind of an electric rock but it's lofi and pretty chill. The whole vibe is actually pretty calm despite what you might think. I'm thinking summer is here, and this one is gonna be a good one.

If you're an actual game developer this is a good thing. It increases the value of indie games due to cattle pass fatigue.

Game devs are battered housewives that defend a monopoly taking 30% of their income forever while giving them zero (0!) ZERO exposure. They're mindbroken slaves that think they're just temporarily embarrassed Szymanskis.
Gamers are also mental children that don't care about art in any capacity so what we end up with is battered housewives working their fingers to the bone serving garbage to spoiled children while daddy sits his fat ass on the couch and does nothing.

I don't get this meme about bump allocators, at least not for games. Most game entities have individual lifetimes and aren't freed all in batches, but when the character/enemy/entity dies or is removed.
You can put all of them into slotmaps/slabs with a free list and have basically free allocation and deallocation anyway.
You mean just for temporary data for computations within a frame? Or you actually mean using a bump allocator for a level/room, never reuse any memory until the player changes level, and hope that he doesn't stay in the same room for too long?
>>
>>562313883
It's just some guy who had a revelation about memory allocation after being lied to to use malloc in the tutorials he followed. Yes if you're using it for individual objects a free list is better with pre allocated blocks and some sane limit which is O(1) but for SIMD or ECS they're not cache coherent. There's another technique I've read awhile ago which uses some bit flags to indicate where it should allocate near other blocks so it also has better alignment.
>>
>>562313883
Clearly you're a chump dev and your game doesn't have 100k dynamic objects at runtime. Go make your silly platformer or something.

I'll reply seriously because you need to know how much of a joke u are:
It's steam a defacto monopoly? Yes.
It's 30% too much? Maybe, but it's industry standard
>You get nothing, since they don't push your shitty showelware
Lmao no.
There is a limit to what they can push like a virtual display case, and products that sell or that become 'hot' get pushed.
For 30% u get tons of stuff:
- A place on the biggest and best digital vg marketplace on earth. You don't have to build a site, there is no sidestep "who the fuq is this guy selling this shit. can I trust him"
- A newsfeed you can use to update players and wishlisters
- All the monetary side of things are done by them, you don't need to deal with banks at all
- Automatic dlc system
- Integrated deal system that updates your price in the steam wishlist, and also sends wishlisted a mail
- A forum for your game
- A suggestion list that say whom from your friends already has or have wishlisted ur game. So a new player can ask for opinions from their friends, or know who can coop/pvp.
- A controller support overlay, remote online and achiviments support
- Auto patch upload that's pushed automatically
- A gift system where some dudes can buy your game for other ppl
- As a dev you can make deals with other devs and create a collection so you have a better discount
-card system for those collectors types

All of this is "nothing" tho.

No one is making you pay them but people will also probably just not buy your shit if it's not on steam because it's not worth the hassle.

You realize marketing budgets companies pay for advertising is not usually at the place people buy it?

Valve can charge 30% because they think you will make more money paying them 30% if you can sell on steam, then if you couldn't sell on steam and didn't have to pay them 30%. They are correct the other options all suck.

Well no, among major storefronts of independently published software (apple store, google store) the standard is 15% with only an increase to 30% after the product receives it's millionth dollar within a year.
Unless you mean specifically lesser storefronts of non-independently published "AAA" games software (the consoles) in which case also no because Steam doesn't charge those guys 30%... assumedly because they want to entice AAA onto Steam so they undercut the console percentages.

For situations where you need to frequently make allocations each of unpredictable sizes, and then free those allocations as a unit.

In my example, I am using bump allocation to build my sparse voxel oct tree.

Instead of calling calloc each time, I use a revolving door staging buffer to source bump allocations from, and then crystallize the tree into a GPU packed format and then reset the tree bump arena once it is packed.

I'm not knocking free lists and other allocation strategies but as >>562314146 mentioned I am actually doing things with SIMD and ECS. It serves me anytime I need contiguous memory.
I'm not trying to force it everywhere like file i/o and hashmaps, but I do use the arenas pretty damn frequently.

My arenas and arrays (just arenas with some differences) reserve contiguous virtual memory and then commit as the need arises. Its a pretty basic setup.
https://codeberg.org/FroggyGreen/rooster/src/branch/trunk/src/data-structures/vmem.c

>It's just some guy who had a revelation about memory allocation after being lied to to use malloc in the tutorials he followed.

Malloc is just how I learned from books I read in high school. I got into a strong habit of using it for a while despite knowing about other things.

>There's another technique I've read awhile ago which uses some bit flags to indicate where it should allocate near other blocks so it also has better alignment.
That's interesting.

>ou mean just for temporary data for computations within a frame? Or you actually mean using a bump allocator for a level/room, never reuse any memory until the player changes level, and hope that he doesn't stay in the same room for too long?

I use them the most in my ECS, which is just sparse sets. Most of my arena uses are intended for things that are created at program start and destroyed at program end. I also have a main arena that I use in place of malloc in many places.

I also use Vulkan buffers an arenas for my vertex buffer. index buffer and storage buffer.
Look at this post https://arch.b4k.dev/vg/thread/561759797/#561762564 . All the vertex data is stored in two offsets in a single vertex buffer despite different vertex strides for the two types of meshes, all the index data is stored at a single offset in an index buffer, and all the transform data is stored in a storage buffer at three offsets.

Being able to push anything at all is a feat in and of itself but that also massively favors slop from all the ambitious projects being cancelled before they're finished due to burnout or financial issues. If you don't think your game adds anything to the market then I'd question why you're making it in the first place, I could never imagine making a game that I myself would not like playing.

Maybe you're learning but we don't pay people who are learning either, that model's been long gone so if you put yourself out there you better perform. Just like any competition with an open bracket you're being seeded against the best of the best when you're the worst because it's better for the industry if the spotlight is on them rather than some nobody no one cares about. That also means it's a big deal once you do make it out, people will take notice of you if you're able to make a name for yourself.

You want steam to cut their profits margin by hallf? I know you're in a delusion phase but let me get as clear as I can - they won't do it. They are raking in the money and you have no leverage. If there was a competition, a competent competition, then you might actually see them offering better deals. Right now you have retarded timmy , non-existent itch.io market and hosting your own site that won't even show in the google search until you pay 1000$ to index it. You have nothing to offer, you have no real alternatives and you want them to just hand over half of their profit just because it'll make things better... for you. You might as well ask Jeff Bezos to cut his paycheck in half just to increase the income of his workers.
We're not living in the fantasy world kid, now first think of the way to find a leverage against steam so they're actually motivated to lower their cut. Wishy washy ain't it.
>>
>>562319469
Froggy you're so lame you spend days on a simple arena allocator and you claim you "commit as the need arises" but you're just pagefaulting all over the place which just reduces performance, just be up front about the memory you need instead of doing shitty tricks like Go which when out of stack space copies it and allocates more stack lol, you're fighting yourself on the cache locality front. I don't get why you keep doing it like this either you just have some CLI game which either you're trying to learn because you sure as hell don't need this mental autistic masturbation you're forcing upon yourself to make a game. Sparse sets for ECS are also debunked and inherent bad design, again fighting yourself on two fronts. You have this mental autism which many technical inclined programmers have to make things more complicated for yourself than it has to be either to due peak dunning kruger or inexperience, just like make game.

musicians are more outspoken against spotify for example, and frequently encourage their fans to support them outside of spotify. and they also start coordinated movements to raise awareness over how spotify is damaging their creative careers where actually big musicians join in to help spread awareness. gamedevs, for the most part, don't do that for some reason and just accept shit the way it is. that's actually what the conversation started with

no one is searching steam for new games in current year. you literally have a better chance of that happening on itch than steam.
but realistically the storefront doesnt matter, you get your game played in a youtube video and the people who want it find the store it's on. that's all there is to it.

you see, now you're talking with a little sense - let's have an union of developers that have their demands in a written form, send to Steam and convince gaben to give them better treatment or they won't publish on his storefront. Of course you need fans of your work that will also support you and that means you need to be an established developer first and work with other established developers too. Still, I think there's a disproportionate difference in damaging costs for spotify artists too, isn't that they earn like 8 bucks for 1 million of their tracks listened? Imagine you sold 1 million copies of your game on steam and you got 8 bucks.
Spotify is super shitty, steam is not.

Another way I use arenas is for things whose lifetime is limited. People say everything in an arena must have the same lifetime but that isn't true. If you allocate and store the offset you can always reset the arena to that offset.

So a typical usage would be allocating something that only lives in the scope of a function.

Also I haven't found a need to use a free list with my entities (yet). I have an array of components and I only fill out as much of the array as I need. As the array grows more virtual memory is committed. I can probably do some optimizations but I don't want to start profiling until I have actual gameplay lol.

>>562320303
>Froggy you're so lame you spend days on a simple arena allocator
Days? I remember it being easy to set up. Its not very complicated, and I never intended it to be.

>you're just pagefaulting all over the place
Isn't a pagefault on the order of microseconds? I don't see how this will be a bottleneck with the way that I'm using it. A page is about ~4 kb so I can't think of any situations where I'd be adding so many components at once that multiple pagefaults will happen (after the initial startup).

>Sparse sets for ECS are also debunked and inherent bad design, again fighting yourself on two fronts.

How so? Do you have any articles on this or videos. Since it has been debunked I'd like to learn more.

>You have this mental autism which many technical inclined programmers have to make things more complicated for yourself than it has to be either to due peak dunning kruger or inexperience, just like make game.

I just like to implement things that I find interesting. Don't see the problem with that. But yeah there are cases where I get a bit lost in the sauce.

steam really is not that much better, sure it's not this extreme, but they still eat 50% of your income, because the 30% they take from you does not include the 20% that goes into VAT.
>Of course you need fans of your work that will also support you and that means you need to be an established developer first and work with other established developers too.
a big problem is that a lot of gamers are just rabid steam defenders, and gaben cock suckers. like, a lot of them even deny that literally gabe himself personally wanted to push paid mods on steam with bethesda, something that gamers unanimously hate, for example. this is what i imagine scares away established devs from this, because the reputationa risks for smaller ones are too severe, and obviously nobody cares for AAA. how do you suggest combating that?

this as well, it's insane how literally nobody ever brings up how the steam cut DROPS the more you earn, down to 20% if you make 50 million

>>
You no devs have no idea how fucked you are
>>
>>562321381
The issue derives from that when it's sparse you either need some look up (hash) table to index into it and full fat array will always beat it, it also complicates ECS systems for no reason even though the design might be simpler to implement at first. Popular ECS framework authors like EnTT go into some more details about this but I don't have a link at a moment's notice right now.

>you can bet that they have backroom deals with AAAs to lower their cut to 15 or even 10%
Not really, there's a reason every AAA has tried to make their own storefront but only Blizzard succeeded where the others failed because they realize that people want to use it as a community platform and as company newsletter more than anything else. I also happen to know a retired producer/AAA studio-head so they would know and the backroom deals do not exist.

I'm from Sweden, possibly the most unionized country on earth and compared to 20 years ago, market conditions have rendered unions both toothless and actively harmful in most cases. The Unions are definitely not on the side of the workers and they only exist to employ workers who are too useless and incompetent to do their actual day-to-day job. The only thing you can trust a Union to do is prevent someone from receiving fair compensation in the event of a dispute and to prevent a company from getting interns or part time laborers.

Crabs, crabs all of them, Timmy flies you out on a conference all expenses paid for ofc to host a little talk, just a little light indoctrination no harm done. They want you to feel like they're on your side, that they're your friend and you know there's just some realities you have to live with. 5 years down the line when someone's a little too cushy you can bet your ass that the only concern of a game developers union is making sure that no one else are able to become one.

in order to deal with a problem you have to actually bring up the fucking problem and talk about it in the first place. and yet for some reason any time someone complains about valve screwing over indie devs on the internet you have actual paid shills drowning out the conversation and people like you who say "bro stop talking about it, it won't change anything"
even though just simply drumming up enough noise about it could be enough, as valve is very sensitive about their PR and image (TF2fags managed to give back voice chat to the free players in TF2 simply by approaching valve with a petition and starting up drama on the net about it)
>>
>>562321924
I don't understand how it complicates things, I find it rather simple. I don't see how a fat array could be better if the data is sufficiently sparse. It seems like a waste of memory. I don't think that's ALWAYS a big deal, I play a little fast and loose with memory myself, but if I have a bunch of entities and several components each that are associated with ~10% of all entities it seems like you are going to have a real problem with memory ballooning. But more importantly you are going to have to loop over a lot of dead components. That is bad for the cache.

If there are few components and a small amount of entities, sure I could see that. I'm not convinced it makes a big difference but I can follow the logic there. And if you have a component that all or most entities have, like a label, sure once again it makes perfect sense to me.

I don't believe the claims you are making are outright lies but I'm not going to believe you easily on this.

What I do know is that sparse set insertion and deletion is cheap, and that iteration is better than a fat array. So I would need to be convinced that the insertion and deletion creates some kind of bottleneck compared to a normal array.

Yeah houdini but don't get into that if you aren't a pro pro. There's also plenty of vids for hair cards. Most of them suck. I'd look for newer ones

Honestly, IDK how to get it to be 4-sided, because that could really improve how this all looks due to me not constantly trying to bunch shit together to cover up bald patches

because this place alone has many gaben ball fondlers who do their best to drown out any complaints about steam, just look at the discussion ITT and how a particular indian tried to shit up the discussion with low quality posts.

the only low quality posts are about lowering the gaben tax without giving any reason to do it. Just go with the googem route, itch.io -> 0% -> market through the youtube shorts. Good luck!

In 3dsmax I can extrude the edges then weld/collapse the vertexes of each strand to form the missing faces. I'm sure that's possible in blender too
>>
>>562326323
Steam's cut sucks but you may as well be complaining about taxes for all the difference it'll make.

Where did this idea that I'm the Zuckjeet come from? Genuinely asking cuz I know I get blamed for a lot of stuff here but this one never made sense to me.

If you're willing to dump the 300 for houdini indie you're getting some pretty strong software but the learning curve is pretty high. It has solutions that you won't find on other programs though

I get the messy style it feels like early age anime
