I've been trying to properly articulate what exactly Sonic's characterization stand out, what the memorable stories like Black Knight do that bad ones like Forces do not, and what exactly people tend to miss about him in regards to narrative. After going through the Blade of Courage manga again, I think it helped me learn that the point of Canon!Sonic (when written competently) is to be a "supporting protagonist".What I mean is: he enters settings/other characters' stories and is a shaker-upper, but the just-as-big thrust of it is bouncing off the people caught up in his slipstream (watch him bring a not-Venice duchess or ordinary child along on a whirlwind trip on a whim, drop him in medieval times to see him clash with high concepts like chivalry, etc). He's undeniably "the lead", but a big part is how others interact with this irregular, irrepressible guy who views life with a surprisingly simple lens despite all his energy ("just some guy who loves adventure").Rivals question if he's all that or have their own reasons to be just as unyielding. Allies try to wrap their heads around him during those periods when he's stopped, only to push themselves to keep up as he blasts away. Incidental characters are baffled, almost uncertain what came by. Villains try to present an impossible obstacle to curtail or contain him, only to find their perfect plans foiled by the unexpected: that he's more than they assessed, or had friends they didn't give consideration. Et cetera.Think of it as being the "star of the show" in similar vein as Scooby-Doo: while there's technically more to say about the cast around him, it's HIS endearing core set of traits that Sonic "Sonic" which anchor the episodic nature of the series.
