I think in this case it's a problem with the terrain, rather than the controls. Crisis City is flat and wide, White Acropolis is bumpy and narrow. Sonic always had humans in it's world even if they were somewhat on the background or as backlog cast members. All anthro casts were invented by western cartoons and depictions of Sonic and every piece of non-game media that has an all anthro cast suffers greatly for itPeople only started complaining about modern sonic having humans once adventure 2 went overboard with it and decided to put the CIA chasing Sonic and the president of the United States taking Shadow and Eggman as threats and getting the army involved so in hindsight the jump from classic sonic to adventure 1 seems way more violent than it actually was. No one would take that much issue with Sonic walking around and talking to humans as this weird animal mascot, it's quite charming even, or with having a prominent human character besides Robotnik. Hell if Elise was handled as more of a sidekick and very super duper close partner that Sonic carries around and helps out like Pauline in Bananza instead of making awkward romance between the 2 people wouldnt be as pissy about it
