I always liked the idea of a more intricate Eggman though, not necessarily sympathetic but just more detailed as a simple way to explain his over the top behaviour like having his robots be shaped like him due to his enormous ego and the like. Before Frontiers I had a personal headcanon for years that the reason Orbot and Cubot were so stupid was not out of Eggman's personal failures as a programmer and engineer but just that the thought of making an AI that was somehow extremely smarter than himself would be such a genuine blow to his ego that he just decides to not do it on purpose specially given his track record with his own machines
