Something that I have only experienced in one other game (Ace combat infinity) that is really fucking satisfying is using your plane to fly *somewhere* instead of being like WT and pretty much every game were you just "fly to target, destroy target, fly back"

This mode allows you to fly to an area where you want to fly CAP, or fly to an area and look for ground targets. That gives you a minute to breath, to talk shit in chat, to strategize, to check maps and watch for targets to pop up. It's nice.

You clearly haven't flown above a few thousand feet or past the main front line. They are absolutely oppressive, the BUKs kill anything between 3 and 20k feet, for miles around. The S-300s can kill you at 10k feet over your own airfields, and not the front line ones, the second lines.

This doesn't have any radar guided missiles whatsoever. It has a radar, but it's a ground search radar that's meant for doing things like finding warships. You can pretty safely just turn its radar off entirely since I don't think it provides you any benefit and some very attentive opponent might notice your radar on their RWR (unlikely since there is so much fucking noise on this map, but possible).

The "keep it simple stupid" approach is to not bother with BVR shots with the mig-23 since you only have 2 Fox-1s and can't afford to miss. Instead the simplest course of action is to learn how to swap your radar over to "air combat mode" and use that to attempt to lock opponents that are flying TOWARDS you. You will have a significantly easier time locking people coming towards you than sideways/away from you for reasons that I can't be arsed to elaborate on. Try to acquire a lock within ~10-15km and shoot. After shooting you want to turn to one side and dive to the ground so that you can "crank and multipath". Cranking is turning your plane so that you're flying at roughly 10 o'clock or 2 o'clock compared to where the enemy is. Basically as far left or right as you can while still keeping them visible on your radar scope. This slows your approach to them and buys you some time if they shot a missile at you. Multipathing is flying low to the ground (~30-50m above the ground). Hold your lock. Doing both while holding your lock maximizes your defensive posture. If it starts tracking chaff or something, then just bear with it and keep holding. Only attempt to reacquire the lock if the radar box vanishes entirely.

I made this last thread. It's color coded, and it has 7km radius circles representing an approximate danger zone for SACLOS guided SAMs. I think that there is still some danger a bit beyond 7km, but you'll probably be fine if you're actively trying to run away from them.

I don't have a good grasp of how long of an effective range that the buk/hawk have. The thinking is that if you stay low, then it's only the SACLOS sams that threaten you. Hence the SACLOS danger zones. Although, having played on both sides, I swear that the OSA is more aggressive than the flakrakrad.

The effective ranges are really comically long, BUK and HAWK can easily reach over to the other side of the line. However you have to be above a few thousand feet and stay there for long enough to the missile to reach you. It's trivial to defeat but that's the point of systems like this, the theater and strategic SAMs put a hard ceiling of about 2-3k feet on the entire map. Bringing you down into the range of the OSAs and Gepards and such. It would be 10x worse with manpads.

Day 3: I think I finally got a handle of Rank VII. At the very least I'm a lot less nervous playing the rank as I was. Still dying a lot I'm going on victory streaks more often.
I just started rank V. I think the best part of this event is that it will make me numb to V going forward. Got my end of the world playlist ready so it's time to go out to face the nuke strikes.

Even the most basic of AMRAAMs and base R-77s do, in fact home on jam has been a staple radar missile mode since midway through the SARH age.

I'm now getting a consistent bug in every game of the new mode where the flares randomly stop working on my Migger-23 and they refuse to launch

i know from dcs that sd-10/pl-12 do. you can set them to fly ignoring everything until they reach an interest point, to hit whatever they see first or to hit what is currently tracking your plane. also home-on-jam.

When you think about, you can fit just about anything into this mode. Helis (obviously), tanks, ships, infantry, hell, you could add strategic air defense, unarmed transport/supply/search & rescue trucks/APCs/helis and indirect fire artillery into this without much issue, everything can find a niche in an open-ended sandbox like this given proper mechanics and mission objectives.

They have home-on-jam that tracks continuous "noise" from airborne emitters when they can't track with their active radar signal. Rather than homing on active search and tracking signals from an enemy radar
