>>562563537I would be very impressed if you could make mechanics like that fun.Losing feels way worse than winning feels good so when you tie randomness to basic actions, it frustrates most players because the anger they feel from a wrong guess builds up faster than the good they feel from a correct guess. This is why games usually either tie randomness to exclusively positive effects like crits, or they tie it to an optional move like a powerful attack that can justify it's bad odds.To mitigate this, you could make the odds mostly in the player's favour, but I'm assuming doing this would diminish the point of the game.

>>562577647are people quitting within 10 minutes indicative that your game just doesn't "feel good" and that should be your priority?
I've noticed a pattern in the mind that when you believe that an answer exist, yet you can't find it, then you'll spend all your time trying to find that answer. Which is a problem when the answer actually doesn't exist, but the "answer" involves trial and error and actually doing things. That's how I'd explain the behavior of spending all day on the internet trying to find a solution for your problems instead of just trying things. You can observe something similar when people play games without the wiki. In that scenario they have absolute clarity that the answers aren't exposed to them and that they have to figure it out by themselves through experimentation (hypothesis and trying to prove it).Maybe part of it is the idea that other humans are very intelligent, so for sure someone must know how to e.g. have success, so I just need to find that someone and download his information into my brain. But this pattern fails, when it doesn't work out that way. It's almost like some glitch that keeps your brain blocked forever. Endlessly searching for an answer that doesn't exist.Maybe another factor is the combinatorial explosion of systems. What might work for somebody doesn't work for someone else, because in a math equation factors matter. And if you e.g. have different parents, different friends, a different job, even different language, everything is different.I guess you could sum it up as "you need to figure out what works for you" and the answer for that isn't out there for you to download. It's not a piece of information you can find online. It's something you have to figure out through trial and error. Which is especially hard to accept for solution oriented people or people under immense time pressure to find a solution asap. Trial and error can basically take decades if you are unlucky, maybe even never work out. It might also include accepting completely new directions that you didn't plan, because they are a better opportunity inside your circumstances.

i had a friend who never found a girlfriend. always single. almost desperate. then he moved to a new town and in just 1 month he found a topmodel looking girl and had the best time of his life.it's actually insane how you can completely misinterpret your circumstances as personal failings.success in gamedev is probably not different. self-blame is often a low-iq attempt to identify the problem. it'd explain why a lot of successful devs aren't even that intelligent or good at what they are doing, they just felt more motivated and inspired by their circumstances.e.g. would stardew valley exist if he wouldn't have had his girlfriend? maybe he wouldn't have had the motivation to make the game, cause he would have been sad about being lonely or so.

chasing money and being a pessimist is some really fucked combo. good luck getting someone to do something for money, when he believes nothing ever pays off lol.but i wouldn't say it's just being money oriented. it can also in general be goal-orientation. if someone wants to make his dream game but is a pessimist, he'll also believe that it's not possible to make it.i dunno the way out of this. i guess the brain is just glitchy as fuck.

>>562581768>its similar to a lot of popular gamesIt's not. There's not a single indie success in your genre. i've been playing games since the 90s and i've ended up at a point where i like games like House Party and Schedule 1. i'm so tired of medieval fantasy and war games. zomboid is also cool because it also has a "modern" world.i think modern small towns are the most underrated game environment. i'd argue at best even just 1 house where you do something inside. Phasmophobia also did that.another thing i still kinda like is The Forest. mixing wilderness survival with signs of civilization (containers, bunkers, modern tools you can find etc.)actually bunkers and commie blocks are something i don't see at all.

151 days left. I owe my game 1100 minutes of work. Yesterday I found out that I didn't fix one of the bugs I thought I fixed, so today I'll be dealing with that nightmare, and maybe fix a few other bugs if I get lucky.I'll be having sweets (once!) in a couple of days and it's like the light at the end of a tunnel. I haven't eaten any sweets in more than 2 weeks and I crave them so much I can't stand it. I can't decide between croissants, donuts, donut holes, so I'll probably have all 3.

>>562608161um bananas are basically candy sweetie
>>562609961I mean sure but it's not sustainable and it's not that superior to just eating normal food that keeps you healthy. Normally sugar cravings stop after 4 weeks unless it's used as a coping mechanism, but your answer gave a clue to what it may be. Sugar is empty carbs and foods like pizza are also filled with empty carbs, your stomach doesn't really know the difference except some carbs digest fast (sugar/refined starch) and others slow (fibers/complex starch). You can get the same effect by just switching from garbage to whole-grain and veggies.>>562610303Fructose is better than table sugar/corn syrup because sucrose triggers an insulin response. High consumption still leads to diabetes, abdominal fat and liver disease but fructose is already about 2x as sweet as sucrose so you'd need to eat an insane amount of fruit to kill yourself the way you can with candy and fried food.

i seem to absorb a mindset everytime i use the internet. it's something like:>ai makes all my skills useless>not worth trying anymore>i can't do it anyways, even if i try>it's too hard>market oversaturated>wont make money anyways>not worth learning new skills, cause its all useless>hard work doesn't pay off>you gotta have a perfect idea to make moneywell just a vague description of the mindset. but when you look at social media, it's exactly the mindset that is extremely popular nowadays.i wonder if internet actually conditions you to have imposter syndrome and to become extremely nihilistic.e.g. what if it actually works to just make a game, without a perfect idea, just making something work, yet you don't do it because you have that mindset that believes everything is hard and useless and pointless and impossible etc.?i just really wonder, did i form that belief from experience, or did i just absorb that by using youtube/4chan/reddit?
>>562624745It's so over for me and my game
>>562626461what actual experience do you have?
>>562626461
>>562626863none basically. all i know is that things are hard to do and hard to learn. that is my main problem. i personally believe that if i'd have the skills and the productivity to get shit done, the output could make money. but my problem is exactly that: being more efficient at producing quality and quantity.but it still matters, because am i motivated to improve my skills, when i believe that it wont pay off? no.and since i don't know if it'll pay off, i'm probably way more prone to what other people say.
>>562626461Why do you want to make games? If its to make money, gamedev was probably never a smart way to accomplish that. If its to make a game you will enjoy yourself then the only ones that matter on that list are:>i can't do it anyways, even if i try>it's too hardWhich, wont know unless you try, right? What do you have to lose, what would you spend the time on instead? If its doomscrolling social media, trying to make a game would still be a better use of time even if you do fail in the end
>>562627483>If its to make money, gamedev was probably never a smart way to accomplish thatsee, this is the exact type of conditioning i mean. people like you, over and over, empathize how it wont make you money.
impostor syndrome is just a phase of dunning-kruger. it means you have reached the "valley of despair".
photorealism seems like the best option, because it's the most compatible with asset packs.i guess another argument would be that if you aren't good at art, photorealism can just be copied from reality and you don't need to have artistic intuition to make art styles work.
>>562628017>he doesn't know
>>562626461As the great John Patrick Mason said:>Your "best">Losers always whine about their "best">Winners go home and fuck the prom queenIf you don't set out each day believing anything is possible you have been buck broken by your own failures and a sociopathic system that doesn't care. People can do great things but if you've never cultivated discipline, seen the fruits of your labor, felt the encouragement of your peers or the support of your tribe then your brain will simply dampen the neurochemical signals that rewards the effort. You're playing an incremental game in a foreign language with an entirely different number system and color coding you don't understand. You can criticize the game for not telling you what it is or take the plunge and get swept into the unknown with no guarantees. It's all a waste of time anyway, the numbers are all an illusion, your only real purpose is to spawn more clones from 3-4 generations ago and then die.
>>562627739I didnt say it wont make money, I said if money if your only goal gamedev likely isnt your best bet. Like al a rts, you shouldn't be doing it unless you enjoy doing it desu. Or better yet if you have no choice cause some inner forces drives you to create against your will
>>562627876I'd like to leave the valley, sir. I've been despairing long enough.
>>562628017Photorealism only looks decent if it is very high fidelity. If you go half way and make it look like Arma 2 then it looks jank without any of the charm which you could've had if you went for stylized but lower fidelity.
i'm going to focus my energy on improving my craftsmanship, especially code quality and architecture even if the end user never sees my code. i don't want fragile code that i can't easily add more gameplay mechanics to. being scared to make my games more ambitious due to crap code is holding me back. thanks for reading my blog.
I am really glad I've caught the threads back before they got filled with /biz/ people, who treat this hobby, as if it was a crypto pump and dump. This way I got into the discord, and not really stuck with the neuroatypicals.
a quick bite sized game in Three.js that someone can just consume in a parking lot after work.
>>562629135dont fall for this trapthere are so many content that people could enjoy in that position, why would they play your small gameif you want to make small arcade games you must focus on children games
Don't tear down your fellow dev. Lift them up and write a long essay for the indies who make it.Together we are mighty.
Friendly reminder that a "bite-sized" game for Steam should still be at least 3-15 hours long.
>>562629346I'm making my dream game, I'm also just thinking of some side projects to bring in some income as I build my dream game.
flashy animations, cool particle effects and good OST is all that gamers crave.
>>562629619Wrong. Randomized solution spaces and optimization weights to NP-hard problems is all that gamers want.
>>562629540>one of the tracks was inspired by finger tappingCris tier take
>>562629863Can you explain?I though what players wanted was multiple skinner boxes in juxtaposition.
>>562619581IDK if that sounds stable
>>562629541clarification: the steamie is incapable of differentiating 15 hours of hand-crafted proper content (think like actual unique levels with story, or different quests in an rpg) and a retarded endless procedural time-waster a-la vampire survivors. now whichever approach is better is up to (You), but both work equally well on steamies.
>>562630229I challenge you to differentiate the two objectively, if I spend 15h having fun vs spending 15h having fun. If one takes more money and effort than they other does it have more value?

>>562630835>this is about what it takes for the dev to makewhy?
>>562630047Good games with replayability all reduce down to some class of NP-hard problem. Randomize the solution space by limiting the options available at any time (e.g. refreshable roguelike shop) and randomize the optimization parameters (e.g. random enemy encounters each with different mechanics). You can still create a "jingling keys" half of the game to increase marketability, but fundamentally, it's the problems solving portion that gets people really playing the game and organically spreading the game. This is how you end up with a game like Wireworks.>>562630229Steamies don't care about your handcrafted gay furry fanfic.

games are commercial entertainment products. if you disagree, you can come up to me at the gym and try your luck.
>>562632009none of this matters because you're not selling your own identity but your game, you have to get your game into the eceleb hands and favour with the algorithms through any means necessary, including posting fake trite essays like the one in the OP pic.gamercunts don't even look at the dev/publisher name on steam, let alone any soical mediaseems like that post helped them get eyes on their game, and that's all that matters. this is just the soulless reality that valve built with steam in 2026 and devs are too cucked to change it.

we. need. better. tools. not. more. games (right now).also engines need out-of-the-box mesh libraries, character creators like sims 4/black desert with clothing etc., house builders, voxel tools, csg tools, plant generation tools etc. etc.there's no reason every project should have to code that from scratch.
friendslop game that takes place in a gym and players have to prevent NPCs from dying while using the machines.
>>562632157A subhuman gamer's opinion is the last thing that any dev should seriously consider. Smart devs look at what gamers DO and BUY, not at what they SAY.

>>562630690Daggers it's a mediocre game that rolled a 100/20 on luck.
>>562632616It's very interesting you say that, so a gamer buys and plays a 15h game and has fun. Another one does the same, one game costs $9.99 and $1200 to make and the other game costs $14.99 and $60,000 to make. There's also Hollow Knight Silksong that costs $19.99 and had a budget of around $9m and offers 100h of fun. So which segment are you going to place yourself in?
