I finally got around to playing forgotten city. It's definitely the highest effort quest mod I have played and probably that exists and it's generally good but I still had problems with it. The voice acting ranges from professional to somewhat bad, but none is anywhere near the worst of mod VA. Just some not great mics and not great acting, the Jarl's voice is very distracting despite being good quality since it's an obvious cheesy Patrick Stewart impression.The writing is mostly good with a few eye rolling moments, but the way the quest stages are structured is a mess and the amount of red herrings and dead ends is excessive. The mystery plot potential is there but it sabotages itself quite badly with the messy way information is revealed to you. I don't know if I accidentally sequence broke or something, but the answer to the single biggest plot twist is inexplicably hand delivered to you within the first 10 minutes. I discovered that reveal BEFORE I found the red herring that's supposed to fake you out of it, and all because an NPC basically shoves the answer in your face. So instead of trying to solve a mystery, you already know the answer to the mystery and you're stumbling around looking for the trigger that will recognize that solution and advance the plot. It doesn't help that there ultimately is no twist to the overarching plot to counteract that, it's completely straightforward in a way that's underwhelming It doesn't seem to know how handholdy it wants to be, on one hand it's giving you the answer to the second biggest question, and on the other hand it has really egregious red herrings. The worst two examples being getting the perfect dwemer armor from the nord, and identifying the body in the tunnels. They spend more time setting up a resolution to the armor than most things in the mod, and that resolution doesn't exist. You HAVE to either kill him or steal it, forcing you to time loop at least once.

I finally came to the conclusion that you must have to kill the guy to get the armor after spending hours trying to find something I was missing that would allow you to get it without killing or stealing and coming up with nothing. They even include quite a lot of dialogue hinting that there is a way to get it without crime that doesn't actually exist. Then after I do the required time loop, every side objective I did to help the other people was undone. after that I just beelined right to the end boss, immediately stopped giving a shit.

I honestly don’t understand location overhauls. I like the look of a lot of them, but they're compatibility nightmare and many of them are hit or miss. Especially given that I like to install less popular mods, which are even worse in terms of compatibility.

The only shit tool we have to use is CK, but most of the things you have to do in it can also be done in xEdit, which is fucking great. You can easily figure literally everything out if you aren't retarded. It takes under a week to figure out how to write papyrus script, use CK, how to use nifskope and outfit studio etc. It's not fucking rocket science.
