Basically badges. They dropped from lvl 55+ dungeons, and later got added to old raids (despite aggrend saying it would never happen because aggrend is a retarded fat cunt)
You could buy toys with them, and some decent starting epics or relics/liberals/totems. But also crates that had a few random high end materials in them.
As the game progressed they added extra things to the vendor like full T1, and T2 bracers/boots, and they updated the crates to have AQ mats/ZG coins etc

I assume the economy is pretty much ruined by the bots all over again and I don't wanna buy gold or waste hours of my time farming gold just for consumables.

I've always played Alliance in Classic, I only ever played Horde in Retail (which obviously has revamped Cata quest zones).
Came back to the game and figured I'd play Horde, but holy cow Durator feels so dull and lifeless compared to good old Elwynn, or even Dun Morogh. Do Horde zones get comfier?

Yeah the blood elf zones (and blood elves themselves) are very pretty, but it didn't look exactly easy to get there as an orc and I didn't really want to roll a belf just for the zones (maybe I should have)

Alliance = comfy but slow
Horde = fast but dull

Honestly just lvl in belf zones, finish ghostlands, you'll get a really nice weapon and skip most of the dull areas.

If you don't like the barrens you can lvl in silverpine etc, but if you wanna skip so much you might as well play alliance.
Lvling in the barrens and all the BS that happens there including barrens chat is a rite of passage every hordie must endure.
