The atmosphere is top notch and the story is good, plus it improves the story of the sequel if you have the context from Mother 1. It fixes some pain points like the encounter rate and a particularly annoying dungeon, and the fan translation is more in line with Earthbound and the Mother 3 fan translation. What if, after Dess the Lightner was gone, Kris decided to make a replacement using the next best thing? He put his Soul into a Darkner and made the Knight, and now he's trying to fully turn it into a new Dess.
