You need one slot to be sewage in order to create the effluent then it becomes inert effluent that needs to be purged but at that point you can void but the ingredients list sticks on zero inert and won't become null so you can put in one more sewage.

Weird shit in Mongrel aside, the game made me realize how full of small vices Endfield is. In Mongil i can beat enemies almost instantly if i'm on level, i can actually run mats stages as many times as i want, quests and places are easy to get to, text is easily skippable if i don't care about something, loading screens are minimal and so on. I honestly have no idea why they made Endfield the kind of massive boring chore it is, and I probably would still be playing it if it had all of these QoL things. Mogoloid is obviously super low budget and I'm not sure I'll play it for long until I jump to another FOMO (or they EoS it), but it doesn't feel like a chore simulator at least.
