If you really want to exploit the Assassin features it makes sense to keep Gloomstalker. Gloomstalker just means more critical hits on turn 1. There really doesn't seem to be anything 2 more levels of fighter contributes to the surprise status strategy. Having Gloomstalker is far superior when it comes to exploiting surprise. If you want to do something like a dual xbows, dual weilding build, or duelists prerogative it would be better to use thief instead of assassin. But then again thief/any other martial gets the same number of dual weilding attacks or prerogative attacks. Might as well just do battlemaster at that point since it's 3 + 1 attacks at level 11 anyways. You just get it a little sooner with 3 thief + 5 martial.

>>564010445The third feat isn't a big deal, really. Gloom assassin really relies on that surprise round to kill everything before they ever move. Dropping that for an ASI is a terrible idea. The typical build goes 6 Gloom 3 assassin 2 fighter with the last level being in assassin for a dex asi, a fighter subclass usually battle master, or war cleric 1 for some bonus action attacks per day. Cleric is more for when you're gonna abuse long rests, battle master is my favorite though.Whatever you do, don't stop a fighter at 6 or 8 or whatever. They get the third attack at 11, so either go only to 2, or go full fighter. It's unironically one of the strongest classes even as a full 12. Sword bard 9 and fighter 2 is a good option as well right now too and their next level would get you magical secrets.
