Is longbow just trash on everything, I swapped from hammer to longbow on my soulbeast to try an archer type of ranger and it just sucks dicks for anything that doesn't die from one rapid fire volley. The aoe rain of arrows also doesn't clear up trash very well + animation locks, the 3 skill is useless in pve, and the 4 skill sucks for when you're in a group fighting something with no defiance bar.

The weapon I really wish was good is Rifle Warrior.

The idea of being a rifle warrior really vibes with me but every MMO falls into the trap where using bows and rifles is the opposite of a martial discipline. Bows especially, where in real life longbows are used by big dudes with huge chests who can pull the biggest weight and in video games they are used by 70lb anime girls exclusively. Ranged weapons as a martial discipline don't exist in MOST MMOs which is kind of crazy. I suppose now adays WOW has Marksmanship Hunter but its still heavily flavored off of the whole "wild" aesthetic, unlike warrior.

keyfarms as you mentioned are probably one of the lowest effort to reward payouts in a "gacha game".
even the mtx present in the game are pretty darn good. the industry gold standard worlo charges 30 to 80 dollars for its mount packages, and 20+ dollars for outfits. the other industry darling, final fantasy xiv has outfits and mounts costing close to 40 dollars as well.
most of the purchases i remember in dead f2p fomo p2w wars 2 are around the "fuck it, it's 5 dollars" range.

Just works for me., never had a problem with it. All of the skills are useful, the invis saved me many times to switch aggro from me to my pet. Dmg is strong with autos, barrage retargets easily, range is massive. AoE does its job, i'm used axe 5 so rooting isn't an issue. It's a boring weapon, but was always good, even before buffs.

My complaint with bows on ranger is they need to be traited to be piercing. The traits already add massive bonuses making them worth taking already, but tying in piercing arrows is retarded when other classes get piercing arrows without the need for a bow trait. I'm lvl 20 and feeling kind of aimless. I'm just going around doing heart quests and the other zone stuff. Guess I have the story quest too. Should I just follow it, or? Does the game send me into dungeons through that, or do I just go find them and go in whenever? IIRC I have to go to the dungeon itself the first time, so will the game send me naturally as I go along, or do I just have to look up where they are?

You can do story, if you want a bit of structure. It's not the best stuff, but makes you run around different locations a lot. Dungeon is a level 30, you'll probably need to make your own group with 'new player, first time' in LFG or wait for someone else to make one.
Best pace for progressing is questing around mobs that are +5 levels around yours. Focus on Power and Vitality stats and upgrade your weapon regularly.
Gameplay won't get much more exciting until max level and expansions, so just try out all the weapons and abilities to keep it fresh.

Dungeons are barely tacked-on content.You can try to get a group together for one but it might take a while in LFG/map chat to recruit enough people, but they're pretty easy once you're in them.
As for leveling, just explore and do what seems fun. Don't feel bad for skipping a tedious heart or vista. If you get bored of the aesthetic of the area you're in, like the rusty metal and orange foliage of Ascalon, just use the Asura gates in your home city to visit Lion's Arch and then use the Asura gates there to visit any other regions.

Kryta is all rolling green hills and forests, with some barbaric centaur camps here and there.
The Shiverpeaks are all snowy fields and forests.
Maguuma is very overgrown and jungle-like.
There's more, if you keep leveling. Like Timberline Ridge, which is alpine wilderness, half forest and half icy cliffs.
Don't feel forced to grind maps you're not enjoying. You can always just visit one you do enjoy, or even revisit maps you've already explored and joining events just for fun. They still give exp.

Dungeons aren't what you do at max level or at all really, besides getting some skins. There is an alternative called Fractals, those are actual dungeons in this game. Max level only.

You're leveled down to the appropriate level for each dungeon. At max level, in good gear, with a build tailored to soloing them, and with a strong understanding of how to play your character and how to handle the dungeon's mechanics, a lot of dungeon content can be done solo, but some require skips or unconventional paths to get through them.

There's a whole sub-genre within the game of people that try to solo group content. The most notable person may be Hizen (I think?). He's got videos on youtube about solo farming dungeons and raids. Rarely, someone may give you shit if you join a dungeon or raid using one of this builds, though, because they tend to focus on self-buffs over group buffs, and buffs are very important in hard content.

In most MMOs, being fully buffed gives you maybe 25% bonus damage. In GW2, being fully buffed DOUBLES your damage output. In Fort Mariner, in Lion's Arch, there's a port into the Aerodrome, and in the Aerodrome is an instance portal into a training area where you can spawn practice golems to fight that will report your dps in chat.

If you go in at level 80 and just spawn and fight a golem, your DPS might be 6-12k. But if you go over to the console and give yourself every boon and give the golem every condition ailment, then kill it just the same way as you did before, you'll probably find yourself doing 18k-24k DPS instead.

If you play a Hizen build, you'll probably be focused on giving yourself as many boons as possible, but someone inviting you to run a dungeon, raid, fractal, etc, might be expecting you to provide boons to others.

Oh, and the "leveled down" part is relevant to getting bored at level 20. Know that if you go to any other level 1-20 zone in the game, you'll be dynamically leveled down so that it's not trivial content. You won't just 1-shot everything. So you can still get good exp there.

Is the ideal pure support weapons Staff/Mace+Focus? By extension would solo support, work in PvE, Dungeons, and Convergences? I don't mind taking several billion years killing shit if it means I don't have to repeatedly die and restart.

You can change your traitlines and specific traits any time you're out of combat, too.

It's a bit try-hard but you can go to metabattle.com and look up a build for your profession and see what stats, utility skills, weapons, and rotations they recommend. That can take a lot of fun out of figuring it out for yourself, though.

Assuming you're playing Elementalist because you mentioned Attunement, there's really not much more to it than using all of your abilities in one attunement, then switching to another until the previous attunement is off cooldown.
My thinking when I'm playing Elementalist goes like:

>if I'm still mostly good on health but I'm about to get hit a few times, I'll switch to Earth to mitigate some of the damage and slow the enemy down

And that's how I handle most fights on my Elementalist. I shift attunements based on the previous 10 seconds of combat and what I expect the next 10 seconds of combat to look like.

But that can be a lot of work. While leveling, you can usually just sit in one or two attunements the whole time. Most enemies will die by the time you use all of your abilities from 1 attunement on them.

Yeah, some generic [Merchant] NPCs sell plain white versions for a few copper or silver.
You can also go to any Trading Post and search for weapons, click the gear icon on the left, enter a level range, stats you want, rarity, "show only available", etc.
You can buy or sell from anywhere in the world, but to receive the items you bought or the gold you got from selling items, you have to physically go to a Trading Post.

If you're Elementalist-chan, you can use a second Dagger or a Focus in your offhand by default.

If you like playing in Fire and are using Fire traits, you might want to look for condition damage on your gear, to make burning more powerful.
It'll also make bleed damage from Earth attunement tick for more damage.
If you prefer up-front damage and don't like damage-over-time effects as much, spend more time in Air attunement and use the Air trait line, and focus on power and precision stats on your gear.

The decision matrix I mentioned before shifts a little based on stats. If I'm playing a power/precision/ferocity Air Elementalist, I'll try to spend more time in Air attunement and use Fire as a fallback damage attunement. But if I'm using condition damage and expertise stats, I'll spend more time in Fire and probably even use Earth as my fallback damage attunement because of its bleeds. Air attunement becomes more about mobility and crowd control abilities if you have no direct damage stats.

But while leveling, you can usually throw anything at the wall. Air attunement will still kill things just fine even if all of your gear has condition damage instead of power.

What am I missing with elementalist, I'm lvl 40 right now and it feels very weak. I thought this was supposed to be the glass cannon class, but feels more like a glass fart. Does staff just suck? I only find the fire autoattack and 3 skill useful in combat, 2 skill is too slow, 4 skill rolls me back to africa, 5 skill channels for 5 years and just misses everything. Water just heals mostly, air is mostly utility, earth does okay damage but not enough for me to swap from autoattacking with fire.

Elementalist is weak. Low health and only moderate dps at best. In pve this isn't a problem because it just makes fights lengthier. In raids and wvw it is a severe disadvantage for the entire group though. This being said, staff is the wrong weapon and you misunderstood the attunements. Try sword/dagger or dagger/dagger or spear. Air is for pure damage, quickness and cc, fire is for moderate damage and condition damage, earth for stability, cc and condition damage.

If you take a different character into SAB you will have to upgrade them from the beginning, but your first character will always keep their upgrades.

Its the player's faults for making hitting a stationary golem the "benchmark" and for complaining about having to do mechanics in the first place. The balance patch was clearly the right move all around.

What are these? I can never pick them up.

I've got a question about the story because I don't know what they've done, but it's a fucking mess and makes no sense.

As a human I save some town from centaurs, all the pve zones is centaurs, the personal story has nothing to do with centaurs and is just chasing bandits. Then there's a cursed soldier and zombies and suddenly all the talking heads are yelling about dragons, how dragons are the greatest threat, we must do something about dragons, but I'm still only fighting centaurs in pve.

I got fucking mail telling me to go to a dungeon and went to Ascalon Catacombs just now. It was obvious I was skipping things by doing the personal story as it unlocked. In the catacombs dungeon I'm going around with a Charr who I remember from 10 years ago on my Charr and we are chasing a Nord woman I have no memory of at all.
Why aren't these characters introduced to me? I'm supposed to know them already since my character talks to them as we're old friends and they act as if they know me. Anet must have fucked up the leveling experience because this makes no sense, I got to level 80 before I even 100%ed the first level 35-45 zone I reached on this character.

The only npc I have had any contact with so far is Logan, the queen and that third woman whose name I forgot, at no point does anyone I meet in the game explain anything about Orr, the dragons, why they're a threat and whatever. I have beaten GW1 up to EotN so I've got a working knowledge of most things but man, leveling and story is a directionless mess. I'm confused as a veteran so it's got to be much worse for someone who is actually new and tries to follow it instead of only playing to make numbers go up.

What am I doing wrong here, how am I supposed to follow the story chronologically when some of it is sent in the mail, some is given to me directly and skipping parts I should do first, then when I google I just get forum posts that say "oh just buy the season passes so you can play flashbacks and prologues"?

Open World maps are almost all local stories related to nearest race and world lore. After level 60 they gradually become about Zhaitan Elder Dragon, you learn about him in personal progressing story too around same level.
Dungeon stories are about the previous group of adventurers, Destiny's Edge, who tried and failed to stop Zaitan the first time (because of Logan). Now are super mad at each other, them resolving that is the Dungeon story. They appeared in a GW2 prequel book, so yeah, it's weird that the game suddenly focuses on them seemingly out of nowhere. Other dungeons paths unlocked after dungeon story path, aren't that important for main plot. Mostly for side characterization and to finish up some open world map stories.
The best way to follow the plot is to do the Personal bits as soon as they become available, while progressing through maps based on your current level and race, without 100% each one. Optionally after you got 80 go do all story dungeons in order of unlocking, to get to know about Logan, Rytlock and co. They also are featured as 'mentors' in for each race's personal story.
Back in the day leveling and traveling was much slower, so you'd progressed more organically.
