With Skyblivion on the horizon, I can confidently say that Oblivion can never be faithfully remastered, there are just so many elements of it being a product of its time. One thing I find that's interesting about the original is that every element in the game is material — the UI is entirely skeuomorphic. On top of being diegetic in nature (of course you're seeing what your character sees in the journal), it gives it a distinctly human element that is missing from later Bethesda titles.I find it amusing that the remaster is also browner than the original, when the original was made in the same era where brown and bloom games were all the rage. Granted it was the early Xbox era where the trends had not fully cemented, but Resident Evil 4 came out over a year earlier and Twilight Princess the same year. Skyrim's effects (like eye adaptation) tend to mute colors quite a bit, and volumetric lighting in the Creation Engine makes distant landscapes look foggy rather than hazy.

>>563927215yeah I remembered the bad writing, the thing that surprised me was the gameplay, seems considerably worse than the other games. halo 2 was a snipefest but you can still quickly rack up kills at least, every weapon in 3 feels terrible. most enjoyable by far was the first half of CE, much better than I remembered it probably because I couldn't appreciate it as a kid. you can tell it had the most planning and playtesting.

>>563927468Why would you do that? You're just going to keep switching back between lewd and non-lewd load orders. Instead, you should strive to use them until they become a natural part of Skyrim. In fact, I'd find it weird if every NPC didn't have their oral, anal and vaginal inflation tracked at all times.
>>563926470In vanilla she is less suspicious. But should be it like that in the first place?
>>563927871I guess delewding isn't the right term, I mostly meant copying the profile, ripping out pretty much everything involving sexlab except like nightlife, skooma whore, and spouses enhanced as well as gutting all of the followers and possibly the NPC makeover mods since I keep getting random (but consistent) CTD's involving generic npc makeovers and Sanguine Symphony.
>>563927439CE simply had the best sandbox of weapons. Everything felt like it was made with a purpose to handle multiple situations in unique ways. 2 and 3 shit on that design philosophy by breaking every gun and forcing you to only use the BR.
>>563928206yeah that's kind of what I was saying, CE is enjoyable because you aren't pigeonholed into headshotting constantly. the automatic weapons and shotgun are actually good and worth using. they went all in on headshots in 2, it works because you can efficiently headshot enemies whether it's elites with the plasma pistol combo or brutes by just headshotting them but I would prefer if weapons other than BR and snipers were useful.3 breaks both of these designs, the automatic weapons are peashooters that aren't even worth picking up but they also nerfed the headshot game by nerfing the charged plasma shot and giving brutes shields. plus it seems to me they nerfed the accuracy and range of the BR and carbine. feels like I have to unload a billion rounds into a brute's head just to kill one, and I'm only playing heroic. the new grenades also suck, spamming grenades is one of the best parts of halo and they effectively removed it in 3.

Is it viable to play as a succubus in skyrim? I'm aware of a lot of the mods, right now I'm testing Soul of a Succubus and it's pretty basic if not the most stable of the lot, it gives you have a second health bar that regenerates through sex acts with a quicktime press to kill afterward, and they give you a spell to attract NPCs and that's about the extent of it. I'm not aware of any mod that lets you disguise yourself as human in cities to still do quests. NPCs don't even react to you looking like a demon it's pretty lame so idk how people play these characters if they even are.

Intend to make his wife a secret Mehrunes Dagon cultist as a character too at some point as well as the mother of his grandson who's the daughter of a Dren ambassador to Wayrest in Daggerfall. The aforementioned dunmer girl, and his two sons, one a deadbeat thief that ran away from home and the other a Mehrunes Dragon cultist will do side content and TR stuff in Morrowind. The cultist kills the emperor in Oblivion and does some side content there too. Than 7 generations down the line it's his descendant becomes the Dragonborn. If I ever play ESO the protagonist will be a distant ancestor of his wife. Based on when TES6 is set if I play that game I will somehow try to link them too.I also have another character in mind, an Altmer battlmage that does side content in Daggerfal, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

It's not a Fallout 3 -> Fallout 4 situation where the skills and flavor perks got removed because they wanted to focus entirely on combat. That being said, I think I'm the only person who actually likes the persuasion minigame from Oblivion. >>563986338>That being said, I think I'm the only person who actually likes the persuasion minigame from Oblivion. It's not a good substitute for actual speech checksI prefer when there is no speech skill at all for speech checks. I like it when speech checks are decided by the specific skill and knowledge of your character rather than a catch all speech stat, like in a conversation regarding magic you need destruction skill to pass the check. Speech and persuasion skills in all the games I have played that have them tend to allow you to pass any check with very little effort through it alone, which leads to speech becoming a must take stat when half the dialogue in the game is locked behind it. I guess devs feel that they have to make speech singularly powerful in dialogue because obviously it can't be used anywhere else, but to me that's a good indicator that a generic speech skill shouldn't exist at all. ironically I think skyrim has a good idea for a speech/charisma style bonus with the bribing perk. I think you could also do a universal generic bonus to speech checks like a luck stat, but imo that's also fairly low impact and boring, it's probably best if speech/persuasion is relegated to perk type effects with specific functions like the bribing.

Or even any kind of attractive character who might be able to talk their way around certain outcomes? That just sounds like you want a speech check system that is a byproduct of the combat system, and while that's great for a casual RPG like Assassin's Creed, it's terrible for a game like Elder Scrolls which believe it or not, actually used to be a complex RPG with dice-roll mechanics. >I guess devs feel that they have to make speech singularly powerful in dialogue because obviously it can't be used anywhere else, but to me that's a good indicator that a generic speech skill shouldn't exist at allOr maybe Bethesda should actually write more dialogue to make a speech skill worthwhile. >>564001810>How do you roleplay a manipulating scoundrel or a suave rogue then?Even a manipulating scoundrel can't talk his way out of literally every situation, which is how speech checks tend to work in RPGs. A dedicated speech stat can't be used to gate a huge portion of dialogue in the game solely to give that speech stat a useful purpose, so if you are going to have a dedicated speech stat it should be a minor or situational benefit.>That just sounds like you want a speech check system that is a byproduct of the combat system, it has nothing to do with combat, it sounds like you are trying to misrepresent my point. It leads to worse character building options because you are essentially forced to take speech skills to get the dialogue you bought the game for. It feels contrived because you would not be able to bullshit your way past every conversation like speech skills let you do. It's just not a good idea.

Yes, not every situation needs to have speech checks but even in those games I mentioned, it's not like every situation utilizes them. Most games add speech checks where appropriate. You might throw your arms up in the air and say that it's unrealistic that you can talk devoted character out of doing many premeditated actions, but it's often justified through the writing in the game. Often in RPGs, you don't even get one singular speech stat but several, like Manipulation, Deception, Intimidation, etc.>it has nothing to do with combat, it sounds like you are trying to misrepresent my point.>The speech checks I'm talking about can be in reference to any skill in the game, it doesn't have to be combat related. There are 18 skills in the game and 12 of them are combat-oriented. More combat-oriented skills = more speech checks for those skills. >Having a speech skill doesn't make your game complex and neither do dice roll mechanics. It adds replayability and skill value. The story of the game should not be existing in service of some arbitrary character stat, that's asinine.>the skills that would provide the most utility are designated combat skills, since there are 12 of them. More combat-oriented skills = more speech checks for those skills.that's a laughably reductive way to look at it. First of all there's no law saying that only 18 skills must exist and they must be at least 2/3 combat skills, but even in the situation that is the case, you can certainly imagine many more situations where dialogue would lend itself more to an intellectual pursuit like alchemy or magic over a pure physical skill like block or heavy armor. You are definitely going out of your way to misrepresent my point now, apparently because you have a personal fixation on speech skills for some reason.>It adds replayability and skill value.I would say the "replayability" it adds is largely contrived and irritating. Arbitrarily locking large portions of the story behind a character stat is not my idea of engaging replayability.>Yeah, you're not interested in RPGs. I think you aren't interested in RPGs if you think an RPG is defined by blindly embracing traditional mechanics for their own sake instead of critically analyzing their value and function. Speech stats are poorly implemented in almost every game that has used them. A blunt character stat dictating dialogue and story content is simply a bad idea, no amount of tantrums and insults on your part will convince otherwise.

If you get rid of speech, that only leaves you with a couple of other non-combat skills in TES, all of which mainly provide buffs for combat (like Alchemy or Blacksmithing for example). There are literally no reasons to ever invest in secondary skills.>First of all there's no law saying that only 18 skills must exist and they must be at least 2/3 combat skillsThe more skills you add, the more unfocused the game's balance becomes. Well-designed RPG mechanics are designed around less but more specialized skills, rather than more pointless dump stats. 18 is superfluous as it is. My suggestion? Condense Barter into a perk tree for Speechcraft. That would eliminate a pointless skill by combining it with another non-combat skill. >I would say the "replayability" it adds is largely contrived and irritating. Arbitrarily locking large portions of the story behind a character stat is not my idea of engaging replayability. Then go play something more casual? Roleplaying games are designed around ROLEplaying. >I think you aren't interested in RPGs if you think an RPG is defined by blindly embracing traditional mechanics for their own sake instead of critically analyzing their value and function. Character-building, narrative depth, and specialization is core to the genre, so speech skills are important in providing that. It would be unrealistic if an attractive player character wasn't able to charm other characters, or a scoundrel character wasn't able to sell snake oil to an unsuspecting herbalist. When the only builds that are respected and reflected in gameplay are combat builds, the game becomes less of an RPG and more of an action game.

You can't have an entire dedicated speech skill that only gives you the ability to seduce a handful of NPCs or sell off some stolen junk for more money, the value of that skill would be far to low to be worth investing in. That's why so many RPGs have gone down the destructive route of arbitrarily chopping up their dialogue and story outcomes specifically to gate them in such a way that a speech skill becomes useful.>When the only builds that are respected and reflected in gameplay are combat buildsWell fortunately, no one has been talking about only combat skills in this thread except your strawman.

Lockpicking and pickpocket also have no or negligible combat utility. The purpose of both of those skills is to find better loot, loot which you wouldn't need if it weren't for the heavy insistence on combat. >right, but like I said the problem is that speech checks override the skill specific checks in almost every example of this because the developers need to make speech worth investing in, which makes those other skill based dialogue checks redundant. That's just not true. I can give you many examples in other games where skills (other than speech) can provide unique outcomes. >So many of you self described RPG experts seem to be obsessed with stat sheets, as if stat values are the point of the game and not simply a necessary mechanical abstraction to make a gamecont.
>>564009578>>564010824A major draw to the genre is being able to successfully navigate your way through many integrated, overlapping mechanics. Dumbing down said mechanics to appeal to braindead normalfags who can't comprehend them removes the incentive to play these games.>I have been talking about RPGs in general this entire time however. It seems to me that you are beating on this strawman of combat so badly because you can't think of a way to directly confront my argument. How is it a strawman? Modern TES is designed to railroad you towards combat in most situations, the lack of non-combat skills reflect this. If you remove speech checks entirely, rolling its benefits in with the other perk trees, you get a system that is designed to incentivize you towards primary/combat skills. Skyrim's speech was so laughably redundant that this is exactly what happened, except Bethesda has no intention of making other skill checks to compensate for it.>Ironic how the supposed champion of complex dialogue completely fails to produce a convincing argument for his preferred speech skill and immediately resorts to name calling and strawmen.Retards deserve scorn. Fuck off.

But those mechanics have to be interesting in their own right, and arbitrarily gating dialogue is not. You can engage with multiple mechanics through dialogue via the multiple examples I have given ITT. This is /tesg/, after all.>If this degree of separation is allowable to say that lockpicking is a combat skill then you could also argue speech to be a combat skill. How? It's the complete opposite. Speech is used to avoid combat. Lockpicking is designed to find loot for combat. You're not given any other motivations for finding loot in TES other than to use it in combat or sell it for something you can use in combat. >But those mechanics have to be interesting in their own right, and arbitrarily gating dialogue is not.It serves a purpose of enabling certain character builds. As said before, the game should allow you to roleplay a character who has no knowledge of anything other than how to speak convincingly. If you remove the possibility to make a character that can talk their way out of fights with one unique skill tree, most players are just going to pivot towards combat skills, because they get whatever checks there are regardless. They wouldn't need to sacrifice levels for it. cont.
>>564011583>>564013129>Using sneak skills to steal sensitive intelligence, using alchemy to cure the illness of a critical witness, using a repair skill to fix a broken device that contains information etc.You can still have those, and also have speech. One doesn't make the other redundant.>Having a basic "SPEECH" skill that unlocks these things for you via your characters abstracted incredible charisma is just as basic and boring as a flat "ATTACK" skill is for combat as opposed to different types and application of weapons.Good game design will open up unique outcomes for speech and the other skills. For example, instead of having to kill a serial killer NPC for a quest, you could pass a speech check to allow them to vacate the region and never allow themselves to be seen again. Alternatively, you could pickpocket the murder weapon and turn it into the local police force to have them arrested. You could even use alchemy to poison them and turn them in yourself. Speech checks being shortcuts is not ideal, but I think it's up to the game designers to make the consequences of speech distinct from what you'd get with the other skills. However, that's besides the point, because TES doesn't even have many speech checks to begin with. Any options other than kill/loot would be appreciated.>Again, there is no reason why this is necessarily the case. You might as well say that RPGs should allow for a build of a character that doesn't know anything other than how to make a great pasta. Except even in the case of the world's greatest pasta chef you could at least imagine some kind of pasta cooking gameplay, but for the world's greatest bullshit artist the only gameplay would be clicking on the dialogue options unlocked by his high bullshitting stat.>If you remove the possibility to make a character that can talk their way out of fights with one unique skill tree, most players are just going to pivot towards combat skills, Again you talk like the only possible options are speech and combat, you realize that even in skyrim the game you criticize as being so supposedly dumbed down you have the option of stealth right? And even in the case of speech, you could certainly imagine scenarios where you avoid combat through dialogue that isn't your used car salesman character putting on his best bullshitting act.>You can still have those, and also have speech. One doesn't make the other redundant. It does make it redundant, as I said. The dialogue skill can ONLY be used in dialogue, the other skills have uses outside of dialogue. This is exactly what I was talking about, it would be very difficult to imagine a scenario where that would be possible. If you were to convince someone out of a behavior as extreme as serial murder you would need extensive personal information about them specifically or some credible threat against them if they continue. In both of those cases you need a lot more than the ability to bamboozle with conversation.>LMAO, it's the last TES game we got. How is it not relevant? It could be, it's easily as believable for the basis of a character as a guy who lies and fakes his way through literally everything in the game. The point is not that I want a pasta chef archetype to be viable, the point is that such a character is absurd just like the professional bullshitter you are proposing.>Can you beat the game using speech or stealth though? No?The point is that there are other modes of non-combat gameplay possible than speech. Stealth is obviously a pretty big one having been in many RPGs over time and as its own genre of game. If you are saying you randomly walk in, then you are defeating your own point by presenting another contrived scenario existing solely to support the existence of a speech skill.>Because your character could be a paper tiger. >>564018894>and by extension is as much of a combat skill as lockingpicking if that is your standard.Except speech isn't used to find things for combat, it's used to get greater rewards from it. It's still a complimentary skill in Skyrim, but it is still a non-combat skill because its primary use isn't just to progress the gameplay loop. >Haelga and Nazeem aren't going around trying to complete quests and finish the storyline. They are normal people living in Skyrim. Your character is also a normal person. They didn't just drop into existence one day and decide to take on the entire country with an iron axe and a flame spell. Speech would've made it easier to roleplay a normal person and not indulge in a power fantasy.>You might have a point here if the game in question was a peasant or medieval landlord simulator. The game is an RPG you dense moron. It isn't Halo or Dragon's Dogma either. You should have options for character building that aren't tied to the power fantasy of shredding through bandits.>And? You are dodging the point. The point is that your proposed used car salesman character is just as absurd as my chef character. Except, one character is actually plausible through the mechanics we have in-game, and the other isn't. You should be able to talk to nearly every NPC in the main quest or at least avoid confrontation with them. Surpassing every NPC confrontation in the game with excellent cupcake recipes has never been a mechanic. >You could say the same thing for sneak, if you reworked the handful of required combat encounters to allow stealth it would work just as well as if you reworked the necessary dialogue options.Yes? No arguments here, that's exactly what they should do. Sneak and speech should integrate themselves a whole lot better in the game.
>>564019327>>564020381>Like what?Well for one, if you pass a speech check you get to avoid a combat encounter. Two, maybe you get to marry a certain NPC that's closed-off and shy, instead of wearing a bullshit amulet. >I already did, hereGeneralizing is not elaborating.>>564019327>you are talking about a person that was already willing to break the most extreme restrictions of law and morality being convinced because the guy he's talking to has a nice sunny smile. Yes. It has happened in real life. Look up the case of Brian Nichols and Ashley Smith. The nigger had her as a hostage and she talked her way out of it.>So your solution here is that your character either makes a complete shot in the dark guess that magically happens to work, or the dialogue option informs the player of content that he missed of his own error instead of enforcing that error. You wouldn't be able to miss a picture on a wall placed at the top of a stairway, would you?>assuming in your scenario you aren't just randomly walking into the murderer's house to see his family pictures but instead have to use some other form of skill to obtain that informationYou wouldn't need a skill to see certain bits of environmental storytelling, as long as it's placed conveniently. >And that would be enough to convince a guy that's apparently capable of extreme violence? Yes, see above.>Apparently you lack too, since your proposed solutions were so bad.Better than loot kill loot.>I said it would require gameplay outside of speech, you would need to do something to get the information you use to convince the person. That isn't speech. You do realize that viewing a picture in a frame isn't combat, right?

If you want to talk about RPGs generally, then even in that case your character is still not just a normal person even if they are not some kind of chosen one. The fact that your character is the driving force behind the main plot means he is more than a random peasant by necessity, regardless of what his role might be. Unless you are talking about an RPG where the object is to grow your peasant homestead or climb the corporate ladder of course.> You should have options for character building that aren't tied to the power fantasy of shredding through bandits. The fact that you have to confront bandits at all undercuts your point, Haelga and Nazeem aren't personally confronting bandits ever. The fact that you are implies that you aren't living an idyllic domestic life.>Except, one character is actually plausible through the mechanics we have in-game, and the other isn't.It's not plausible at all, which is, again, my point. The story of the game should not be existing in service of some arbitrary character stat, that's asinine.>>564007478>You can't have an entire dedicated speech skill that only gives you the ability to seduce a handful of NPCs or sell off some stolen junk for more money, the value of that skill would be far to low to be worth investing in. That's why so many RPGs have gone down the destructive route of arbitrarily chopping up their dialogue and story outcomes specifically to gate them in such a way that a speech skill becomes useful.>>564009578>riht, but like I said the problem is that speech checks override the skill specific checks in almost every example of this because the developers need to make speech worth investing in, which makes those other skill based dialogue checks redundant.Literally every post I have made today involved this exact point. What are you even arguing at this point? My conclusion is that you can't simply nerf speech to be competitive, because its only function is in dialogue, if a speech skill is equal to some other skill in speech checks why would you ever take speech? >>564025248>what is the difference between looting and trading if the end result is still making more gold? The difference is that speech is multifaceted. You can haggle for more gold but you can also talk your way out of very specific scenarios. It's not ideal since this is mostly a secondary purpose for it in Skyrim because as you said, it is mostly used for haggling for more gold. However, that doesn't just eliminate the fact that you can use it to avoid combat. That alone makes it a non-combat skill. Pickpocketing and lockpicking aren't combat skills on the surface, but their integration in Skyrim makes them combat-adjacent skills because their primary use is looting weapons/armor/gold for the sake of the repetitive combat loop. >Being entrusted with the task of warning the jarl of an impending dragon attack for the first time in centuries is not at all out of the ordinary? You can't have your cake and eat it too, that's essentially what you're demanding when you ask for speech to be removed to further emphasize skill checks. I don't even think what I'm arguing is that all that different from what you are. I just disagree with your conclusion.

You can wish for TES VI to have cooking as an additional way to finish the game, but dialogue is much more realistic and plausible given the fact that like I said, TES already has dialogue as a core mechanic in the gameplay loop.
>>564027156>Not at all, you get given the quest by a bunch of lumberjacks working a mill.after you survive the dragon attack, you left that part out.>So is everyone else.quite literally is not everyone else, including the exact 2 people you referenced. >Nazeem is actually important for Whiterun's economy, since he owns their farms IIRC.I'm sure he's very wealthy, that doesn't translate into an ability to do the things that the player character does in the game.It seems like you have a problem with the game having any kind of established narrative at all. What exactly would you prefer, that you start as a random nameless villager with no ability to do anything except toil in the fields that you rise above by performing menial tasks? I don't think you could ever make a convincing argument that it's somehow a flaw that the game has a narrative vs being entirely freeform.>Because the dragonborn doesn't just kill one or two bandits, he enters their hideouts and goes full Conan on their asses.Which amounts to 10-15 bandits at most. And is also a task that is assigned to new members of the companions implying that it isn't an insurmountable task for a decently skilled mercenary. >Everyone in Skyrim has a perfect hold on English, guess the dialogue system needed some abstraction after all.Literate does not involve speaking ability, anon. Your average agrarian laborer is not going to be a master of rhetoric just like he wouldn't be a legendary warrior. You're tying yourself in knots here.>You get trapped in dialogue with bandits out on the roads regardless, they always announce themselves like "SEPTIMS OR YOUR LIFE" or whatever. And if you end that encounter in any way other than being robbed by them you are doing something that any of the random peasant characters you referenced would never be able to do.
