The "Smart" Barbarian which is a second line damage dealer that uses carnage AOEs and probably a reach weapon to fuck enemies up from behind teammates. Alternatively you mostly ignore carnage and int and make a beefy fire godlike retaliation tank that punishes enemies for hitting you. If you aren't on high difficulty you can make more of an all rounder, the game is specifically designed so that ever class can make some use of every stat. But it's not going to be minmax optimal.

And Magic Fusion is extremely fun. Don't underestimate the simple joy of being able to name your own spells. Or the ability to be a truly spontaneous caster and reconfigure your spellbook to mix the exact perfect silver bullet for your situation in the middle of combat. The main weakness of the class is you are SEVERLY resource limited in the early game since you get no bonus spells from stats. All the subtypes are good except Charlatan. Personally Time Manipulator is my favorite because I think it's most thematic for full true Azata and offers probably the best party support. Chronomancy plus second breath means you can just stop worrying about most per day spell and ability limits in your party. And at level 20 abilities become actually unlimited. Plus Time Manipulator "comes online" pretty early at level 4 once you get Chronomancy. Levels 1-3 are rough though. Living Deity has an easier 1-3 since you can get a pet, but personally I dislike its flavor.

But there are lots of CRPGs that have excellent strong options for thieves. Fighter/Thief in BG2 remains a favorite of mine and more or less plays just like a deadlier thief (And Shadowdancer and Bounty Hunter are both good too). If you want OP stuff Set Spike Trap is a truly bonkers HLA. Pillars 2 massively improved their Rogue class and has some really compelling subclasses, and even BG3 added a solid pure rogue via Swashbuckler in the final content patch.
