today I found out that 3 of my friends have been playing wilds together and they're all about HR 50. we just hunted together for 4 hours and it was a blast. there are so many things that I take for granted about the game that they know nothing about; literally one guy didn't know that he could fast travel between camps or what max potions were. another (hammer) didn't know what an offset was. the difficulty of the early game is such that they've been scraping by without knowing these things because they haven't been forced to learn. tonight I helped them defeat their first arch-tempered monster and they were totally stoked. one guy didn't have any honey for mega pots and I ran wide-range/speed eating just to keep him alive.

Because there's little reason to not just live in focus mode since it can be toggled. And while you're in focus mode you can ignore repositioning mechanics and forethought that this game was built on. focus mode would've been fine if they made it an expendable resource; if they gave us a focus bar that depletes whenever focus mode is on, it would've been fine.

but as it stands now, having perfect aim on every single one of your attacks just makes the game so much easier and removes 90% of the intrinsic satisfaction you get from successfully hunting monsters

it really invalidates a lot of what made the game complex and challenging - learning how to reposition to stop yourself from whiffing, all while keeping away from the monster's potential attacking hitboxes etc.

it initially FEELS NICE to hit every thing now and not whiff as much anymore, but that feeling is hollow and has great diminishing returns when combat has been so completely trivialised.

part of MH's hidden, unique appeal that no other game had, was slowly learning the moveset of hard monsters, learning each of the different weapon's intricate fighting styles, and then attacking/moving in such a way that you avoid most of the monsters attacks while keeping as much DPS uptime on the boss. it's why worldborne fatty is objectively agreed by 90% of the fanbase (who are not contrarians) to be the best fight in the franchise. because since he has such high HP, it fully requires the player to keep good damage uptime otherwise you wont be able to kill him in 30min, all while you have to avoid all his insanely hardhitting attacks.

the problem with focus mode ultimately shows itself in the wild's player retention btw. when hard hunts no longer makes you feel good when you accomplish them, why continue to play?

Pretty sure offset attacks have two separate components: applying offset "status" and giving hyper armor. Some offset attack animations also have iframes before the attack connects.

Hyper armor can be inconsistent, especially with AOEs. Generally there is an invincibility period though.
Zoh shia's fire breath has a long animation and I think it normally does damage ticks if you touch it any time during the animation. If you hyper armor (hiltstab specifically) the initial hit, you can stand still through the rest of the animation. If you hyper armor then press attack or roll, you'll get hit by the damage ticks.

Lagi's two novas do multihits differently. The small nova is the same as Zoh's fire breath. If you hiltstab the initial discharge you can stand still and be invincible.
If you hiltstab the big nova, the longer animation will tick you and/or the two sets of 4-direction lightning strikes will get you.

Some physical attacks have multiple hitboxes.
If you hiltstab gog's slam about where the wingarms elbows get close to his back leg knees you can hyper armor the wingarms and get hit by the knees.

I have now 20 skimpy armor mods
all those hours grinding random monsters in the guiding lands sure came in handy because I wasnt lacking any material for my layered armors
but my points are being drained like hell
I dont like mods because more often than not they're very cheaty but gooner mods are a gift from heaven being able to ogle at my huntress in skimpy armors is so nice
now if only there was a mod to make it so mantles dont cover my huntress
the closest one I've seen was one that turn mantles into exposed body parts but I dont like actual nudity

I'm shit at MH. This worked fine when I was going through the game because I can take a hit or two before I have to heal and the pace was generally slower so I could at least attack between hits.
But now that I'm into the later HR stuff with tempered monster I'm getting filtered by the apex predators and other harder monsters.
