There's a lot of talk about how, after large battles with enormous death tolls, too much aether worth of souls try to return to the Lifestream and are unable to all pass on, leading to lingering spirits and aether which ties into how you open your chakras. The massacre at Baelsar's Wall works on this principle, when you think about it. All of those dying resistance fighters consumed to form an avatar of vengeance against Garlemald.It's actually pretty heavily foreshadowed, since Widargelt similarly wanted to utilize this sort of aether to become a weapon against Garlemald, and the youth of Little Ala Mhigo were influenced by Ascians to attempt a primal summoning as well. The idea seemed rather popular in the resistance circles west of the wall, in retrospect.

You could really see it with WHM in SB, the Lily Gauge was a huge meme for the entire expac because it did literally nothing, and then in ShB WHM got significant changes (positively received) to make it work better with its gauge. PLD's Oath Gauge is another example where they still haven't figured out how to make it interesting, they just made other cooldowns depend on it which barely matters in practice since it's tied to a fixed interval (autoattacks). MCH's heat gauge was disastrous and turned an already somewhat janky job into a nightmare that had to be completely gutted to see wide play again. Occult Crescent is deadass one of the worst content they've added to this game. FT seems cool but the barrier to entry coupled with being burned out on OC's monotonous grind means I have little interest in bothering with it now. On top of that I'm not even invested in it because there's almost zero story and I have little faith North Horn is going to make up for it either.and then you have Cosmic Exploration that wants so badly to be Ishgard Restoration but there's no excitement in seeing advancements to the base or the map expanding because you just go there to get your relics and either leave or craft at spawn without exploring the map (not that there's much to see anyway.) Drone Bits feel like an attempt to remedy this by forcing you to explore more but then they make Drone Bits a slow grind to obtain with a minuscule chance of even getting a reward worth anything and gets old fast when you realize how long it takes to run around and find the artifacts.On the other hand I think this iteration of Variant/Criterion and Deep Dungeon was mostly handled well. This content is easy for me to jump into and have fun. Some reward tweaks and making Pilgrim's Traverse *a little* more difficult on the later floors would've gone a long way. (Another set theme would've helped a little too but that's be me nitpicking.)Anyway these are just my idle thoughts that no one asked for. I feel like there are ways to make content in this game enjoyable because enjoyable content already exists and I hope they continue working on nailing down a better formula but man, it's so deflating and frustrating to see so much dev time spent on absolute dogshit.
