I played the demo and it was pretty boring mechanic wise. I was very surprised when it got 27K wishlists. It showcases how important appeal is and what the limits of appeal actually are.
It really does go to show how much of design in gamedev is about getting people to actually try your game.

stock market is high odds gambling, like with a good strategy your chance to win should be over 50% even if by just a bit and when you are at that level taking home double your risk you are profitable

now, doing it in practice is of course not that simple but it is possible and I'd claim it is way easier than gamedev

spend a year gamedeving vs a year learning how to trade and I'd say you're more likely to make money with trading

nta but there's actually a couple indie deck building dungeon crawlers but in general dungeon crawlers (the oldschool first person grid based kind) are extremely niche and that's probably why we haven't seen them get mixed with other popular indie game tropes but I suppose that could change with the success of vampire crawlers

If you don't know how to program, you don't know how to design games. Game design IS a type of programming. It's just not necessarily computer programming. It's player programming.

I came to the same conclusion some time ago, good graphics are a prerequisite: before people trying your demo, they need to be interested enough to do so

I'd even go as far as saying game design IS computer programming, it's not coding, but it's programming.
People often confuse game ideas with game design, for example, saying the player should take fall damage, and they should take more the higher they fall, it's not design, it's just an idea.
Saying the player should take no damage between 0 and 5 meters of fall, then after 5 meters they should take 30 flat damage plus 1% of their max HP for each subsequent meter, is game design, and it's basically pseudo code programming.
This is why programmers will never be replaced, programming is a way of thinking and logic reasoning that jeets and non-programmers lack, which it's required for proper prompting.

What's really sad about MMO98 is its a $6 game and most of the negative reviews have 3-4 hours and they complain about a lack of content. Like my brother a bigmac costs more than that game and you got 3 hours of entertainment out of it, get over yourself.

Youre assuming they enjoyed the full 3-4 hours. Most are complaining that you basically see everything before an hour of play time, and they most likely either kept playing for the benefit of the doubt, or just had it running on the side
>>
>>564474524
You know what, I think you're right. Even when working with AI you need to be able to articulate what you want for the AI to create it for you. It won't give you good results unless you go into specifics of how things should work and how the fuck you gonna do that unless you understand logic and programming. Sure, it might occasionally shit out a functional script if you take enough shots in the dark throwing vague prompts at it but try making a full game like that. Not gonna happen.

Listen, goin for the money bag for your first game it's a huge and long gamble. In agdg the success rate is very very low(higher compared to other places, but low in a practical sense); when a "first game" makes it, you see that that game was being worked on for almost a decade.
The pseudoregalia meme "I did it in 6months" it's doubly harmful because it's a lie that creates false expectations.
My point being, it's very rare that a game you worked on for 10y can overall be a net positive; even if you earn 100k from it (a wow money bag) it's 10k per year. And even less if you count inflation.
For your first three games you should just work on small things you like with no money in mind, building yourself as a dev and your codebase.
After three games made to fuck around, you will have enough muscles to endure a hike for the mountain.
>but it's so long, I need money now

you're talking about what's rational from financial perspective but making things from a financial perspective was never a rational decision in the first place, any artist making something from a "rational" "financial" decision is doing so from abject desperation.
it's perfectly rational to abandon such a project the moment it exceeds expectations because from a psychological perspective every moment an artist spends disrespecting themselves (working on something they don't believe in) is intense spiritual damage that will effect their output for the rest of their life.

>>564479298
Add another layer of systems. Perhaps a system that would make the auction house actually useful. Some kind of new currency which would unlock new upgrades.

The fact that the auction house is useless now could be turned in to a kind of noob trap. The auction house could give some higher-tier currency after higher-tier upgrades are unlocked. Buying the auction house early would become a noob trap.

The "line of credit" feature could become useful, as well. Make a credit score currency. Each time a loan is paid back fully, increase that. Make the credit score a threshold to get some of these new higher-tier upgrades.

They're like this because scummy developers started the habit of releasing "early access" games as finished and completing the product afterwards with updates. You got no one but your fellow devs to blame, it's a tug of war between both sides to screw over each other the most.

>>564480114
yeah ok so you buy more games than you can afford and you check out reviews to try and find a reason to NOT buy.... and you're lying when you say "very positive" gets a free pass because you and i both know you still check the negative reviews of those games for a reason not to buy too. which means the only difference more negative reviews makes to you is that you spend longer on the store page than a game with few negative reviews.... and if we're being extremely open and honest you probably end up buying MORE games with many negative reviews than games with few negative reviews purely by the act of engaging with the idea of playing it as you read the negative reviews.

you should probably stop reading reviews. you've played enough games to know at a glance if you'll enjoy it or not.

I didn't mean that you should have thousands of reviews but I think you'd need like >100 reviews for it to make sense

a <100 review game probably wasn't so good that it's worth the effort of a sequel even if it's far less effort than making a new game

just a hunch but a low effort sequel should target like half the sales of the original maybe it will do better but you shouldn't bank on it doing better than the original

For those unfamiliar with the lore, Nogem was the ultimate project hopper for a while until he finally managed to publish one game on Steam. there's a huge massive gulf between "being able to gift" and pressuring devs into distributing free keys and agreeing to product devaluing bargain bin sales price points and while simultaneously promoting key distribution as a value proposition for smaller stores, blocking reciproval distribution of keys from those smaller stores outing the scheme as blatantly anti-competitive..... and then doing literal anti-compete strong arming on devs which got them class actioned.

it's really on you that i've typed all this out. you made me do this. your boss isn't going to be happy.

If the customers are the gamedevs and not the steamies, then Valve doesn't care about their customers and in fact detests them instead.
Steam support for steamworks partners alone is fucking dogshit, where Valve taking a month to respond to your support ticket is not out of the ordinary.

it was something they did when they were still building out their monopolization of independent games during the greenlight transition era before direct. obviously most of it not blatantly in an email from an employee like these ones that got them class actioned but from paid propagandists like yourself who pushed the narrative that being "generous" with THEIR keys was a sure shot at cheap easy promotion (which is why any dev wanted to be on steam in the first place).

of course after the monopolization was locked in they quit the key pushing stuff. their "userbase" is a sufficiently fat product to sell devs on even if 90% of their bazillion users have never bought anything that cost more than a dollar. the numbers are good which is all they need.

it's probably going to be a year+ to get to a resolution now after valve decided to go the court route..... ironically the fact that it's so obvious they will lose in court and how many people qualify for reparation on it, makes it more advantageous to lose in court and drag it out as long possible than have to settle multiple times.

>>
>>564489994
you didnt really understand what i was trying to get at with that post.
1. these kinds of "DARING BIG COMPANY EXPOSE" videos are doing significantly better numbers today than they did in 2017 when you uploaded this, and thus are far more effective
2. i think there's a lot more "demand" for this type of content as it is clear that developer dissatisfaction is growing. back then when you made your video the problems probably weren't obvious to many devs, since it was fresh off the highly-gatekept greenlight era so the enshittification hasn't yet completely decimated the market. a similar thing happened with totalbiscuit's video on a very similar issue that he made in 2014, which too has fallen on deaf ears.
but nowadays, it's all but obvious that "just put it on steam bro" inertia has completely wore off. devs are lamenting this shit on twitter almost every month know, stopping just shy of naming the key culprit of the issue.

basically, don't be surprised or annoyed when some zoomer steals that video, fills it with modern brainrot editing and makes bank off it

That's a point.
Doing the math and choosing the better option from:
- Selling in itch/my own site and keep more money
- going to steam where the userbase is bigger but you get that 30% tax
- free game, support my patreon
Imo it's very hard and depend both on your game and your popularity as a dev.
Super popular devs with a fanbase can have their own site; the only exception I know of, is starsector.
Free with donation work for basically nobody; you have DF and porn games that revolve around some fetishes.
Everybody else 'has' to use steam. If your userbase are normies, steam is the place.
Of course you can start with steam, and when you get popular u'll revolte against the machine.
In my pov I'm making a simple game for my first time, could I make more revenue if I released only on itch instead of steam? How the fuck can I know. Since steam tax doesn't bother me too much I will default there for now.

>>564490769
>- going to steam where the userbase is bigger but you get that 30% tax
except thats a false choice. the userbase is """"bigger"""" not more interested, more attentive, more open to novelty, more willing to pay a fair price, etc.
it's basically mindless propaganda to equate big user number metric as an equivalent to having access to attention.... steam offers essentially nothing in traction gaining out of the gate in current year, actually it's worse than that, they demand devs gift them with user activity to prove to them that they shouldnt bury you.
and if you're doing all that work anyways why would you do it to benefit an anticompetitive monopoly?

they might not make much off a single video, but they can built a persona around themselves as "le based valve exposer" and make money off multiple videos + patreon donations

there's this guy on youtube, threat interactive, he did exactly that. just parrot /v/ takes about modern game optimization with some renderdoc screenshots to vaguely back them up, and put himself in opposition to the entire games tech industry. i can forsee something similar happening in regards to steam and other game storefronts.

That's great (also love to see a Christian spin working)
Imo a comparison between him and branno has to be done:
>first game: both make a freegame with an ok attempt to make something. both devs 'fail'
>second game: fiend's tries to chase the survival meme, fails. Branno hires an artist, goes 3d and open up a tube channel. It's a little success, but dragged down by art tax it becomes 'almost minumum wage for an year of work'
>third game: fiend's uses his art skills to make a coomer bait poster girl, that's a nun/demon slayer. It makes bank. Branno kick his artist in the butt and make a low effort rogue with no art. But it's not enough, he's now chasing the incremental meme with no art.

Result: art is important, memability is important, something to coom about is always welcome, low effort seems to be smelled from a mile away

normies are an audience that are not easy to reach. they only congregate around specific genres, for indies those would be friendslops and various gamba sims like vampire survivors clones.
what matters more is going viral on social media and with e-celebs. voices of the void is an example of a game that made it that isn't on steam.
you are however correct in that it is easier to convince gamercattle to buy a game if it's on steam and if you really feel it's necessary at this point in time i guess you should release on steam, but it's not 100% unavoidable like say the app store on apple devices.

apple is an interesting case because if you look at usershare numbers they're a flop but on actual profitability for devs they're one of the best because they've cultivated a userbase of whales.... and yet still with a hard walled garden monopoly and a whale userbase monopoly they immediately took up the new industry standard cut of 15% when google play got class actioned into it.

steam hasn't budged towards the standard while also not having the userbase of google play nor the profitable whales of apple. on a calculating financial perspective they're not even worth the effort comparatively.

Pay me $100 to enter my store. Then pay some more in advertising outside of my store to prove it to me that I shouldn't actually shadowban your product on my store. You do this so you can earn the privilege of having 50% of your income be taken before you even see it in your bank account, delivered to you a month after you have "made" that money. You do this so you can sell your game at 75% below its actual market value because that's what I've conditioned my customer base to expect. You do this to have a 10% refund rate because I allow my customer base to pirate your product through refund fraud and do nothing about it.

a couple thoughts/lessons to learn on MMO98 that ultimately boil down to empathy:

1) a good case study in expectation vs. reality on a viral demo. they caught lightning in a bottle on the appeal factor but completely squandered it. Sure the viral wishlists were able to carry them to 250 reviews, but 60% positive ensures there won't be a long tail. its a shame because had they delivered, there was enough momentum for this to be life-changing. instead, they have just enough of a push to keep churning out slop. truly Sisyphusian (catching lightning in a bottle again won't be easy)

2) I see push back from BiteMe supporters that gamers are spoiled because they are complaining about lack of content for a $6 game. it goes to show you that BiteMe and similar incremental sigma grindsetters don't empathize with the target audience and don't understand the appeal of incremental games. By "lack of content" they aren't complaining about hours spent. they mean there is no unfolding of mechanics you see in similar games like candy box, a dark room, horripilant, etc. MMO98 is just a bunch of upgrades that don't really understand build to anything. good incremental games (not the Nodebuster-style) are much more of a narrative experience than these slop-peddlers realize

Conclusion: Success is equal parts luck (getting that viral, often fickle, appeal) and preparation (understanding why certain mechanics/genres resonate with people). They struck gold with the appeal, but couldn't really do anything with it. Sure a 250 review game is decent for the amount of time spent, but all this is really enabling is another lap around the slop cycle.

I think there are two vectors of success here that are both equally valid. First being luck, some games just get lucky and receive some initial success. But beyond that the quality of the experience aka good game wasn't able to carry it further. I think it's a mistake to assume just because some games get lucky it means that all successful games are lucky. Luck governs momentum and quality governs potential, as long as your potential remains high you can always grow your game after release even if your momentum was slow.

>>564495627
>horripilant
Horrible incremental game that sold entirely on the spooky mystery point and click thing. It's 3 tiers of materials that function exactly the same, a huge prestige grind and a dungeon that takes forever to progress and forces you to idle because one run in the dungeon is fucking long once you can clear deep. Without the mystery point and click stuff it's actual kusoge. The shitty incremental is there to stop you from completing the point and click portion in 20 minutes. If this is what incremental audience wants then I really should be making something else.

>>564497804
I think the long tail exists for games that retain a playerbase. I doubt Guns and Nuns is gonna see much of a tail. It's one of those indie games that gets entirely forgotten when the new releases roll in. Well, it already is forgotten based on the player count.

What do you guys think: Standard medieval fantasy, but with cuneiform tablets.
>>
>>564498857
You got a point there. Atmosphere and aesthetics are still big for selling games.

I just wouldn't include it as an example of incremental mechanics done right. There was no real unfolding of mechanics in Horripilant. You can unlock the third material after 1-3 prestiges and after that you have to prestige over and over and over and over again to progress in the game and every time you do prestige you start over. There's a couple prestige upgrades that let you keep some material upgrades but you always need meat to start with after prestiging and you only get meat from the dungeon. You end up doing the same start of a run like 20 times to clear the game. It gets a little bit faster to get back to where you were but it is still a massive grind that doesn't change.

i mean 2000 reviews is just barely starting to scratch the ACTUAL "made it" category.
you may not like this, but for steamies, every game that is under 1000 reviews is considered "obscure". even some games with 1000 reviews are considered "obscure".
quadruple digit reviews is just barely breaking into the wider gaming discussion as a whole. even /v/tards often think this way.

are you a turd worlder? 100k dollars is not enough to buy a house even in the turd world, let alone anyone in the developed world, and last I checked, that's how much money his game made.
remember that i'm not factoring in taxes, because those could drive down the actual earnings even lower, especially in corrupt shitholes.
i don't understand why you ESL turd worlders are always so confrontational. i'm not the anon hating on nuns and guns and i don't have any ill feelings for the dev. i'm just being realistic about his situation, it's nowhere near a "smash runaway hit" that will allow him to retire forever. he'll need like at least 5 more games with the same level of success like nuns and guns to truly score shitloads of cash

DEORUM has somewhat similar visuals and it's also an incremental dungeon crawler this time with actual dungeon crawling. I think you're right that this style has more potential.

The timing of these various dungeon crawler inspired games is a bit curious with Vampire Crawlers showing up but looks like VC steam page was published only in December so that wouldn't have left the devs a lot of time to make these games while trying to play into that theme unless they saw it earlier on twitter or something. Maybe it is just a coincidence.

this one was also made in a very short time, and it earned significantly more money than nuns and guns did. even then this money is not enough to truly retire for life but you could genuinely coast off these earnings for a couple of years, unlike 100k dollars which will only be enough to buy a car at best.

It depends where you live. Anyone else feel like their progress is hindered because they want to be too much of a perfectionist when it comes to implementing things in your game? I also tend to overengineer things a lot or solve problems that I didn't even run to but may. I don't think anyone here said it was a smash hit, or game that can make you retire. If it's so, quote that post and I'll shit on it too.
My problem is that nuns has been pushed down in this and past threads for who know what reason. That bocchi poster is right, Success breeds jealousy.

Also the dev it's an almost unique case of resilience because this is his third game. his only equal is branno and he's lost himself into making low effort stuff.

Shitload != life changing money. It's just a great result, when put in the prospective that most agdg games are in dev for a decade.
I dunno what's your bar for shitload but I think that 99% of agdg can live pretty comfy with this
>but it's not a salary, you are not sure you will get 100k every game or every year
Yes I agree. Dev is highly volatile. If your objective here is to dev something like Minecraft or stardev your chances are almost zero. If we check the global stats having a game with 500 reviews in less than a monthcits probably up to the best 10% of devs on steam

Gamedevs are more addicted to the idea of making it akin to gambling.
gamedev is a skill based lottery system. That's what makes it so addicting, because we cope that our game will be the exception that makes it.

It can unironically work but you need to be careful with this strategy. If the game was flop ie 300 reviews after a year, you're better off making something else entirely. Now if the game had 1000+ reviews, then yeah it can work but don't be surprised if the squel gets less reviews, I've seen that a few times now. The only one's whobreally make bank off this strategu are those with games that have 10k+ reviews. Easy money and doesn't even require originality. Just copy your own game, maybe even reuse a good chunk of the code base, or just reuse the same exact game and change up the art and add new mechanics and slap a "2" on the title lel

Nundev here,

>100k dollars which will only be enough to buy a car at best.
> Buying a 100k car...........

This right here it's why some people can have one million dollar and belief it is not enough because they can "barely buy a house and couple of cars".
The people I interact daily think the same way: they want cars, houses, eat on restaurants, travel.... I never understand it, having an expensive car instead of a normal and functional one... what's the point? you have a speed limit on the road and both of them will take to your destination anyways. None of those things give me happiness neither satisfaction but making games it's something I really enjoy because I can use many skills at the same time and for me that's fun.

Thanks to the success of Guns and Nuns, I can become a full time game developer when I get my first pay and by not being tired all the time thanks to a pointless job, I know my productivity will skyrocket and my skills will grow more than ever. I will able to make more and better games in the future.

A successful enough game will keep earning money long after it's been released and getting 0 updates. 1000 review game released 5 years ago and has 0 updates? Would you look at that it's getting 1 review every 10 days with no large reduction in this pattern. In a 365 day year that is 36.5 reviews a year. Say all of these copies are bought at 40% discount average from a game costing 14.99, thats about $8k a year, pretax, for doing nothing. It's free real estate.

why do you think that your sales are just going to grow infinitely? they'll drop off once the launch promotion period ends (if it hasn't already) and updates and sales can only provide small bumps. they aren't going to earn nearly as much as your launch does. i mean, maybe those sales might earn you enough to keep you afloat in your country but it still seems like an extremely shortsighted strategy.

Okay let's play. Take the low end estimate of 1.6 and say he made about 700k after taxes. Take 100k for next year of living and some fun money. Put 600k into S&P500 which makes 10% on average. Your 600k is now making 60k a year. If you don't spend that much you can keep the extra invested and it'll grow every year. If you live somewhere expensive where that's not enough move somewhere cheaper. That absolutely is set for life level money if our economic system doesn't collapse and you aren't a fucking idiot.

Buying a house doesn't always make sense even if you have the money. With the ridiculous housing market in most of the first world it's hard to compete with renting. I don't know how it is in the turd world. You have to consider how many months of rent is it to buy a house and remember it doesn't stop costing you money after you buy it.
>medical emergencies
Free healthcare.
>something breaks in your house
Home insurance but even better if you're renting and the break wasn't caused by you it's covered by the owner.
>>
>>564513913
>best example is mmo98 which made over 3x that (from bundles) but even conservative estimates place him at $95k post gabencut
What? It says $62.2k last time I checked Marnix got 10k or something

long term S&P returns adjusted for inflation are 6-8% assuming the dividends are reinvested (ie you don't get to live on the dividends). the estimate is that way because the returns are very variable, so it only makes sense to estimate long term. so let's say 8%. 48k happens to be an amount of money that is subject to a 0% capital gains tax so it's viable to live on that as long as you don't need to support a family.

Yes, many people said they liked the music or the gravity, but definitively the main factor is the nun Angelica Amadeus.
The game gained traction on Tiktok, Instagram and Youtube when people saw a crazy nun blasting demons with a shotgun.

That's why I have plans for my future games to have a character that can represent the game, for example, If I have to make an Idle Game I don't wanna make one I will make the game with a theme that allows a nice characters to be on screen most of the time.

lol so it's exactly what i've been saying all the time. just go viral on social media. "appeal" (tranime girl in this instance) seems to be optional but a welcome addition to further ensure success.

Should be noted that a success on that level will keep selling for a couple years. Gamalytic approximates that FlyKnight sold about 3-4k copies in the last 30 days. If that's anywhere close he's making good money off the tail for the next couple years.
