I don't ship Surge and Kit, butI do think it would be beneficial to Kit's character to make him actually infatuated with her. The writing for it is already supported by the comic and if the writers really do want to make him out to older than Tails, this would be the best way to make that distinction. It would also lend better into the idea that they're not direct copies of Sonic and Tails. They have blatant imperfections that make the flaws in their design obvious and to have Kit be romantically interested in Surge would be another layer of difference that also adds to them becoming their owns persons.I get the idw crew are big wusses to people's headcanons that won't dare to disturb the so called "sibling coded" characters who are literally not related at all and brainwashed, but in a better world where the writers aren't chickens and can write without self imposed mental restraints, I think this would be an interesting direction to make out of them. These characters only see each other as "siblings" because it's what Starline brainwashed them into being and even then they're a fucked up interpretation of what siblings would be. To go beyond that programming in such a way would be an interesting development for Kit especially since he is the one more heavily affected by it than Surge. Surge would likely be oblivious to this change in Kit though or actually be shy about it in the way Sonic's apparently supposed to be around Amy

I know someone made a chart of Sonic X screentime, I just got through watching the show and almost all of Sonic's screentime is in the climax of the episodes during the action, for most of the plot of the episodes he is offscreen. https://youtu.be/gyUnw0KCDT0?si=kQMnTGLE0R03rSnqFor example there's this episode. Sonic is offscreen for almost the entire episode. But relative to the other characters he has more screentime. But also, Tails is the hyper-intelligent socially awkward loser that follows in Sonic's footsteps and gains confidence and courage through Sonic's influence. Sonic would never be an "official" leader in any meaningful capacity even though his mascot cool status will draw everyone together, but the absolute best candidate for who would actually BE the "Leader" for everyone would definitely be Tails. He has enough of Sonic's influence and the analytical mind to be both strategic & charismatic.
