playing horizon forbidden west for uh... research for my own game. nevermind i was wrong this game actually has some people working on it with soul. underwater section in las vegas was kino with the holograms, and they put in the whole effort of making the entire place go back to it's neon light show after you complete it even though 99% of players will probably just leave at that point. underwater swimming also felt ten times better than the retarded climbing system and kinda made me want to make a game about swimming.

Wanting to make an indie MMO is a doomed idea, ya? Seems to be. I want to make an MMO too but there are just too many issues to deal with especially with expectations in 2026 compared to 2006. One of the best times for making MMO's without getting players coming in with high expectations and immediately abandoning the game has long since passed. An MMO I played a while back was good, exactly what I would love to make myself. But it had some shortcomings and thus struggled to maintain a player base. If this was 2006's MMO landscape, I doubt it'd have struggled maintaining a player base. Now I need to come in with lots of content, great graphics, and frequent quality updates. Oh and of course somehow have a large player base on day 1 otherwise the crowd may just leave the game asap. But games like Runescape? They've been grandfathered in, they can stay as is and succeed. Man I wish I was a gamedev back then. The mid 2000's to mid 2010's were some of the best times to get grandfathered in. Where the crowd would just accept your game and even if 10 years pass they won't hold you to the bar the hold new games to. Imagine that, being there during the easy days of gamedev and completely missing out. ;_;

i finally figured out the mental illness a lot of people seem to have here. it's called guilt-tripping/guilt-complex.
it's when unreasonable high expectations were placed on you and you feel guilty for not meeting them. it can e.g. happen when you are not mentally ill enough. e.g. if others want to start a war and you don't want to, you could be considered guilty for being to lazy to fight. yet the other ones are the mentally ill ones for wanting to kill.
or if someone is obsessed with helping others and you don't want to help, and then you are gaslit into believing you are bad and selfish (big in europe right now).
or when someone is very tidy and always needs everything extremely clean. and you don't care that much, you aren't a messy, but you also don't need everything very clean, which is normal. therefore you aren't mentally ill, but the actually mentally ill person constantly shames you for not being tidy enough.

with that type of mental illness you constantly feel judged, like you have to redeem yourself. you will always feel like you have to do something that goes against your own will. you constantly feel like others think something is wrong with you, yet you don't feel it yourself about you. you feel ok with what you are doing, but you feel judged for doing so. so your problem isn't "not being tidy enough", your problem is the judgement from others for not being tidy enough.

what this will do is create a whole life where you constantly feel guilty and judged. you are scared that others will attack you, punish you etc. - you don't do things anymore because you see value in them, but only to avoid punishment. therefore you have a really hard time knowing what you want. you don't have this strong energy to create your own life, cause your whole life becomes pleasing the mentally ill people putting high standards on you.

this might accelerate when you are a people-pleaser or very lonely and therefore "needy" for validation and human contact.

Here's my honest review of horizon so far.

Its a very weird mix of competent and trash. Theres all these very competent parts made by clearly skilled people right next to complete dogshit. Most puzzles and world design seem pretty well thought out by the designers but fail due to the awful floaty and unresponsive movement and climbing system. Machines are all very in-depth enemies and each have tons of parts which can detach if damaged or react when attacked with different status effects and change their moveset or cause effects to occur which is really impressive but are held back by the stupid buggy AI. Combat is decently fun and there is a lot of build variety but is held back by the awful cluttered controls that are designed for controllers and not keyboards. Story has some interesting concepts but it's held back by the game treating me like a braindead retard and overstating the obvious. Some characters are interesting and well voice acted while others are complete DEI slop and sound like fiverr VAs. There's also a lot of accessibility shit that just gets in the way. definitely feels like there's a handful of geniuses surrounded by an army of retarded DEI hires pushed onto them who made this game. I think salvaging the unique and good parts and transferring them to a game where you fix all the retarded awful shit would make for a very good game, but unfortunately the good parts seem extremely complex to create, at least for my coding and art skills.

NTA but I'm utterly infuriated because while my moveset is functioning and generally feels nice to use, I feel my inputs are too samey and the resulting attacks, while they serve functions, are too easy to perform. For example, pause attacks are more focused on multi-hit and hold attacks are more heavy one-hits. But even though those serve a purpose, it's TOO functional.

I honestly want to make a game like a pokemon world with waifus where I simulate diferent nations of waifus, and basically have something like 256 waifus in an island and they live an npc life, where they work, pee, shit, sleep, eat, get drunk, socialize.

But then I realized, why not use an LLM to generate the content, like I can code a randomizer of anime tropes and generic waifu archetypes, mix that shit with insecurity, hypergamy and other shit like hobbies and histrionism for the realistic female experience.

And then use comfyui to generate the art of them naked and sucking the MC brown shota huge shota dick.

So why not aim for something big like 10k npcs?

Why not go big and just have an rpg with waifus you can talk to and fuck where they live their own SIMS life, but you can basically do GTA shit to them.

I could basically generate every possible IRL race and anime combination.

It basically boils down to the thing I need happening, massive success of one game. With gamedev it just feels like you either make enough to quit waging (or at least be able to neet for several years) or you're still stuck waging. The middle ground feels impossible. You need a lot of things going your way to even get the middle ground, full return on investment + a multiplier to make up for not knowing how much you would make + an additive amount to cover the expenses of at least 3 medium sized games. Enough money needs to be made so that this gamble can even be worth it and for it to cover the development of future games. As for the necessity of it earning enough to cover the expense of 3 medium sized games, that is just in case you release one and it flops, then you are still in the clear for 2 games.

You would probably use conventional image-gen, meshify to make it a 3D model and then mixamo for animations, throw it in blender with a pre-rendering script. It's still some work but it will yield the highest quality result while still sticking to AI.

The alternative is using something like Nano Banana but quality is shaky and it's not that good at animating.

If we set aside the problem of scope and maintaining a service, I think it makes far more sense to make a co-op game that has offline singleplayer. Co-op RPGs are getting very few games per year if we're talking about games that aren't open world craft survival flavor of friendslop. Looking through the Steam pages Ctesiphon doesn't have appeal. The text snippet sounds generic and fails to sell the game. The visuals look just fine but they're weirdly saturated at times. I learned this truth while playing WoW. With every material the prices will get stomped by retards who can't math. The example that comes to mind is I was transmuting meta gems, the materials cost me about 120g and I could sell the product for about 200g. For those who don't know, transmuting has a 20 hour cooldown. I sold those at a nice profit for a couple days and then some retards caught on and in 2 days the profit was down to 30g, I looked at the prices and people had randomly undercut each other anywhere from 1g to 10g. And it only got worse from there as more retards thought they could profit and the amount of raw meta gems on the market exceeded the demand you couldn't even be sure you could sell the gem if you transmuted one.

TLDR most people don't understand money or the value of anything, not even their own work. That's why you got people who think a $10 game is too much but a $5 coffee every day is fine.

So the other day I did a quick estimate of how long finishing my game would take. I went over the to-do list and added days in my head and tried to overestimate how long everything would take to compensate for the planning fallacy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planning_fallacy). I got 77 days. Then this morning I did it again, not remembering how long my first estimates were but just counting up again. And I got 75 days. Like okay, two estimates come up identical (because 2 days had passed) so maybe it's in the vicinity of accurate? Or maybe I should just 2x it anyway, in which case I'll be finishing my game while trying to cope with whatever menial humiliating minimum wage job I'll be able to get when my money runs out. Which will be in 129 days by my last estimate.

At least it's not 2x. But the article on the planning fallacy says it's been shown the fallacy can be significantly counteracted by breaking the tasks into segments and then doing an estimate on each segment and adding them up, which is what I did.

I have constructors take a variety of lists but most of the time it's just single values that are passed.
Encapsulating a value to be IEnumerable is quick and easy but gets annoying when I need to do it all the time.
Overloading the constructor is easy as well but the amount of constructors needed increases exponentially with lists added - and it gets even worse if I want to pass the value on to a base or chained constructor.

That usually requires you to live nearby, though. The only coworking+coliving place I know of is Spelkollektivet.

Otherwise you're gonna be trapped on discords and w/e. They're unfortunately a lot less genuine than a 4chan thread but the threads have been a bit stale lately. I still come to post progress sometimes though.

It's still not 100% guaranteed everyone's gonna be yesdev. Government education schemes like Erasmus can lead to clueless young'uns just like how at university I didn't really put effort in. It's only once I started gamedev I actually started doing something for myself and working hard.

But, yeah, I recommend Spelkollektivet, I've been there before, even met an old /agdg/er there. I won't specify who.
There's also plans to open up something similar in Latvia, but that's still applying for funding. I'm hoping there'll be more places in the future because this kind of place is rare and it'd be nice to have somewhere closer to my family.

Upkeep is an issue considering the funding thing. If you let people stay for free in return for cleaning, it can help, but that has other issues (it doesn't count as work for certain government schemes like pension and such)

As for fighting over it ... It can happen, but once you've set roots down and have a community, they'll be able to work it out. It's most fragile early on but the further along you go, the more people are willing to go out of their way to ensure the place's survival.
Especially if people move into town just to be there. At that point, they're invested and can't let it all just disappear.

The biggest issue ends up being marketing and funding. How do you find such a specific audience? Just word of mouth? How do you get funding?
Actually, the Portuguese place got EU funding if I recall right, I don't know why the local government fucked it over though.

Average day is I get up before noon so I don't miss lunch, I eat lunch, I get a hot drink and work and then I get a drink and work and I get a drink and work and I do that over and over unless I see something interesting going on / it's dinner time
No language/cultural barriers really. I even had some small kids try to sell me flowers once and I asked if they spoke English and they did. It's rarely an issue

there's a weekly event for playtesting and a weekly event for what's effectively real life progress posting. Sometimes there are game jams.

I got more work done than usual, probably because having an actual office space makes me feel like working more, or something like that
