Combat in Banquet for Fools really exploded for me when I realized that perfect parry ripostes and most follow-up attack conditions can only be met by your lead character. The game really seems to want you to rapidly ping pong between characters and essentially play your whole party to maximize your output instead of just designating one your main and sticking with them. Also, I'm starting to get mixed feelings about Multihand. It's extremely strong, especially when paired with intercessions, but it's really annoying to watch only a few enemies in a massed up group get hit when a two-hander animation would have whacked them all. More importantly, having to pump two weapon skills is just an extreme investment when you could instead have that guy toot a flute/shepard pipes or give them fauna/vines so they could have summons tag along.
