i find it weird how complicated it is to setup input in game engines, even though input is really the core foundation of a video game. it's basically everything. imagine your game having no keyboard and mouse input. nothing works. it's basically not a game anymore.yet in unity i make a mouse click on a button, yet it doesn't automatically "eat" the input so it doesn't trickle down to the game input.also setting up something like rimworld where you both interact with the world and the ui at the same time is annoying, because the input system would rather have you switch between UI input and Game input the way it is designed. or you click on a button and it always "grabs focus", so you have to work around that clicking tab afterwards doesn't "jump to next ui element", but rather the game recognizes "tab" again and e.g. opens the inventory.then also important for input are mouse cursors. it's so annoying to setup mouse cursors between ui and game. e.g. in ui toolkit i can set a cursor on hover. yet setting this up also clashes with other scripts again that set the cursor in the "game world". sometimes you end up with a cursor that isn't what you currently want.also in general UI is also an input. pressing a UI button isn't different from pressing a keyboard button. therefore i think UI should be handled as an input stage, not as "UI".just like you can ask each frame "was left mouse button pressed", you should be able to ask "was upgrade unit pressed?". ofc you can kinda do this and callbacks exist. but the whole system is definitely not designed to treat ui as "input" like i described.

>>565065393>>565066243You're too kind anon. I'm slow as hell because I stubbornly don't follow the prototyping workflow of "make it ugly, but make it all work first". I like things to be finished as I go, which is less efficient but it gives me more satisfaction

It can't learn, only weigh probabilities on what to do next based on what information it has.It sees "I went to", checks it against its database, sees that "the" has a 99% probability of being next, so it prints "I went to the", and then the cycle repeats.More advanced AIs do this on entire blocks, not word by word, but that's the gist.

skills don't matter much in gamedev.proof? Eric Barone, the game developer who made Stardew Valley. you may have heard of him or his game if you're in the "biz". well he also made the Android game AirPear that completely flopped. and he had the same skills that he had when he was making Stardew Valley. therefore? Quick question, how much do inconsistent pixel sizes on things like textures bother you guys in videogames? My game is kind of all over the place looking at it and while I don't mind and even like it, I'm not sure if that's gonna be a problem point for some people.
>>565072726just copy a game made by people more skilled than you for years until you catch up to them in skill! and get lucky that the game you picked hits the cultural zeitgeist in the nuts
>>565072848doesn't bother me any more. used to a little, but my favorite games are where I noticed them... favorite.. so they did enough right eh? don't sweat stuff like that.
>>565072848>inconsistent pixel sizesif youre using ai i would lean into slick assets. but if you struggle to make consistent artstyles and whatnot, it's probably not a terrible idea
>>565072235i dont believe this story. why were they using 4.6 when 4.7 has been out for like weeks
>>565072848Depends if it's inconsistent because it's in 3D or if it's inconsistent despite being 2D, if it's the latter it definitely does not look good.
>>565070620I look like this
>>565073667>>565073165>>5650729723D, and I don't use AI for anything art related. I'm usually pulling textures by taking snippets of real photos from the internet and editing them as required. Is AI art stuff normal now? (I am out of touch)
>>565074063It's very normal, every AAA and AA game uses AI textures, in places like Japan where the copyright law is more strict it's lead to a lot of lawsuits.
>>565074229A lot of the games I see perusing places like Steam and Itch don't disclose it, even though I think they're supposed to. Is it something a lot of people and studios don't admit to?
>>565074063AAA are using AI for background assets(paintings/posters). gamers don't really care , if they want the game, they will excuse whatever practices. I remember "boycots" over games in the past and then come release everybody is playing it kek
>>565074380Half the time they don't even know they're using it because they contracted someone using AI or they bought an asset pack which was AI generated in an attempt to be more legitimate. They're definitely supposed to disclose it but the premise is retarded, the burden of proof is on the accuser not the accused, how do you prove beyond reasonable doubt something is AI generated?
>>565073613>he updates everything immediately
>>565073862Zamn what game are you making? I want to impregnate your bussy
>>565074520>how do you prove beyond reasonable doubt something is AI generated?it's getting harder. I'm sure many are getting away with nobody noticing. and may have for years now if they were clever.
>>565074520I suppose it is entirely possible that I could have part of an AI image floating around in my game anyway. I'll look into it but honestly building textures out of random pictures is one of my favorite parts of my work flow, would kind of be sad to replace it with prompting. I also have a dogshit GPU and couldn't run anything locally
>>565074846Theoretically that gets you into more trouble than AI generating
>>565066374imagine being this guy and letting a shitposter from the general live rent free in your head like this
game idea: a visual novel about a romantic story where a blonde woman finds a romantic partner in a golden retriever
>>565074846>building textures out of random pictures is one of my favorite parts of my work flowsame. there are some textures that are a bit out of reach(big scifi/industrial stuff), and AI is very tempting. but figuring out how to fake stuff is fun.
>>565074950not if he takes the photos from an old texture CD from the 90s, nobody would ever know. as if some artist would catch a tiny scratch pattern on some font or whatever? nah

>>565075989yes but apperantly steamies are already having melties over all the ai slop on the platform.seems like garycunt isn't interested in controlling the quality of it, so i'll leave you with the conclusions.
the reason ai is so braindead is because when you translate reality into words you have an extreme data loss. therefore ai is trained absolutel braindead data.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbal_overshadowingsame reason why teaching is so much less effective than just being around a role model. words are very good for communicating abstract things, but very bad for communicating reality.

>>565076480I really don't care about the platform beyond some minor testing. It's the steam release capability that's interesting.

>>565081419as of right now you can't export games officially unless you get explicit permission from garycunt.and even then it seems like even if gabencunt will allow it, you will still need to be approved manually by garycunt, then valve, and THEN you pay the $100 steam fee, because if you use source 2 externally the steam release is mandatory.

solodev is impossiblecollaboration is impossiblehiring is impossible if you don't have budgetlet's apply logic.if not alone, if not with a team. this means it's impossible. expect: if you use assets. it's basically a pseudo-collaboration with anonymous contributors. basically a collab where the others do what the fuck they want and only contribute if they want and they dont give a shit what you do. basically you have full freedom and they have full freedom. and you just gotta bring it all together.so the real question is: is being a "producer/director" possible alone? does one person have enough time to bring it all together and arrange it into a coherent product?
