So for the longest time I dismissed the idea that Martin's early Sonic design was a result of a misinterpretation of his quills. I always assumed it must've been a deliberate aesthetic choice since there are design documents for Sonic 1 that Oshima provided to Sega of America that show Sonic's back quills as they're supposed to be. However there's this early artwork of the Sonic 1 title screen by Oshima that Martin clearly based his cover illustration on, and the way Oshima drew Sonic's quills isn't really that different from Martin's portrayal. So now I think it really was a misinterpretation. Why didn't Sega of America provide him the artwork with his back quills? Who knows but the design was changed around 1994 to more closely match the intended quill look
