People only play games "seriously" if there are appealing competitors at the top who have demonstrably superior skills and knowledge people can aspire to emulate. The top level being aspirational yet attainable maximises the number of people who will vicariously watch their idols while relating it to their own experience with the game. Enthusiasm and investment in the game trickles down from the top. Gutting skill expression in favour of accessibility fails at pleasing anyone in the long term.
