I'm dropping Kugayama Shiori's Death Diary. I'm like halfway through the game and I got a few bad ends, but after a certain point there's way less of her and she was the only good thing about the vn in the first place. The other characters are boring (although Shiori isn't that interesting in the first place either), and the story is boring and just drags on for too long with too much filler. I don't care enough to even skip through all the choices and get at least the true end, it's just boring and not worth reading at all. Video games are getting better, gacha of all genres are getting better, web novels are getting better, HRPGs getting better, blah blah... Just watching people, it gets harder to pick up and commit dozens of hours to a VN when there's such heavy competition. If someone is spending all day going through the new Limbus Company update then rounding out the rest of the week playing Ninja Gaiden 4, reading Allusionist, watching Orb: On the Movements of the Earth... I mean, it's just harder to be appealed by VNs. HRPGs is kind of what got me. I loved Bishop nukige more than anything. Kagami art is what made me learn Japanese. But then their games got super shitty, and I played 200-some nukige looking for anything good, but it was all just so wordy and time consuming and samey. Meanwhile, HRPGs are out there constantly trying new things, doing new things, and just being way better as pornography. Not all of them have great gameplay or anything, but even CG hunters at least deliver porn quickly and with immersive qualities rather than making you read 200 lines of bland dialogue per h-scene. Then sometimes you do get hits like Unholy maiden. It was just not wise for nukige to let themselves turn into slop when they have this kind of competition.

When I finished, Person X saw my review ( not my posting) and got interested, but didn't play immediately. It took over a year before they got around to it and started. Their playstyle is slow and methodical, posting a bunch of screenshots while working their way gradually through a game in a very public primary channel for the cartel. A month or so into this slow liveblog they had finally posted enough that a pretty big "cartel member" noticed and got interested. This big cartel member played on a whim, but their playstyle was totally different. They played incredibly fast. They blasted past the first guy, and in order to not spoil the first guy, started making a bunch of posts either spoilered or vagueposting about insane shit. Like "oh shit I can't believe this," "oh my fucking god this is so kino," "I can't wait for you to get to X point." And that was really the explosion, which had little to do with me beyond inspiring that first guy to play it. Suddenly every Cartel member is seeing, 1, a bunch of methodical screenshots showing off the game, and 2, one of their close friends + respected JOP gushing non-stop about how insane and good the game is getting. And this inspired more people, who then also gushed, which inspired more people, etc. The secret in this sauce is just that basically everyone loved it and so kept talking about it. The #1 most important thing for convincing other people to play something is to simply show them the good parts of the game while demonstrating having a good time yourself. They will see the good parts, think "wow that looks good," then they will think "I want to be having a good time like this person," and then they will start. A big key part is that basically everyone who actually plays it ends up liking it a lot. I think of the 50+ Cartel members playing, 95% of them love it. But there is that 5%.
