i'd put games into those categories:
a) bad idea, low effort -> doesn't sell well
b) bad idea, huge effort -> sells kinda well, but it took a lot of effort to make it all look pretty and appealing
c) average idea, huge effort -> sells really well, but doesn't blow up, also took a huge effort and high-end graphics to be appealing
d) good idea, low effort -> typical niche game, sells ok, but doesn't blow up
e) good idea, high effort -> sells really well, basically games like ark survival, conan exiles, dark souls etc.
f) the lucky top tier idea, normal effort -> blows up, major hit, nobody saw it coming
g) the lucky top tier idea, high effort -> does not exist yet

Like with AI companies AI devs mostly rely on hype so obviously they will just spam their ragebait instead of devving. You know that WEBM where it shows the snowmobile game being vibe everything in real time? The webm that is usually at the top of each thread? They have a YouTube channel with like 400 subscribers and they were advertising their shitty Unity AI agent since early 2024 or something, memory is hazy and I can’t remember their name, it was basically them failing to advertise in this general.

the fucked up thing about life is that through the complexity of a system you can never know what something leads to. sticking to a project that will make you 100k could have also prevented a project you start 5 years later that will make you a multi-millionaire. so basically something good happening could prevent something even better happening.
e.g. a friend of my family landed a job 30 years ago, basically completely out of luck after moving to a new town. but now it's 30 years and she still has that same job. and she seems kinda bitter, because the boss also wants to desperately kick her out. basically the security that job gave her locked her into that job for the rest of her life.
i think once you find something that works, you become close-minded, you become blind to other opportunity, because you value security over opportunity. which is fine, because security has value. but it also means that not having security can be a good thing, because you are "lucky enough" to have circumstances that keep you open-minded.
sometimes it even becomes a real problem to companies, when they are so rigid in their old ways, that a new company can just use new tech and completely replace the big company, because the big company would rather play it save than adapting to new metas.

to me the most important question is: what game to make?

my status quo of games NOT to make (for various reasons):
a) your dream game
b) wanting to improve an existing game
c) "scope correctly" mini games
d) "just do it" blind yesdeving

my most educated guess what to make:
a game idea that fits you as a developer. basically something nobody could have made because they aren't specifically you. something playing into your strengths.

at least that's how the music industry seems to work. once artists fully embrace themselves, nobody can copy them anymore.

so i guess this can't happen before you truly know yourself in the first place.

over the last few years my brain developed this annoying tendency to believe it knows everything or that it knows where to look up anything. this kinda seems fine, i don't need to learn over and over e.g. how A* pathfinding or how flood fills work. but what annoys me the most is that it assumes there is nothing of importance to learn anymore. it basically assumes there is no important new knowledge i could attain anymore. that basically everything of value has been discovered by me already. my brain basically assumes it has hit the max cap of all relevant knowledge.

one idea i had for why that is, is because over and over i keep seeing educational content just teach the same stuff. i basically never find anything new. therefore i assume that there isn't more to know, because the "community of devs" doesn't explore anything new. so basically i'm still curious for new knowledge, but i'm not curious to look for educational content anymore because i assume they'll just repeat the same old ideas. my brain basically started to assume that there is no more knowledge to attain by listening to other humans. or it thinks that new knowledge is so buried that it's basically hopeless to find the needle in the hay.

yeah, i get what you're saying, it’s like your brain's gotten lazy or jaded from seeing the same stuff over and over, so it starts to believe there's nothing new worth learning since everything worth knowing has already been discovered or shared by the community. it’s kinda like, why bother looking for new knowledge if the sources keep repeating the same ideas? and that makes you less curious about educational content because you assume it’s just more of the same old stuff, which sucks because deep down you still wanna learn new things but your brain's convinced it’s a lost cause or that the new stuff is hidden so deep it’s pointless to chase. it’s a frustrating cycle, but maybe breaking out of it means trying to find those rare, overlooked gems instead of sticking only to what's familiar.

i think all games need to have educational value to be appealing. all children games encourage some sort of skill, be it running, catching, hiding, talking, team-building, pattern recognition, empathy etc.
ofc while you are playing hide and seek it doesn't feel educational, but it is.
when a game is nothing but a time-killer, then it starts feeling meaningless.
ofc by educational i don't just mean intellectual knowledge. a game can even teach you commitment, e.g. minecraft can teach you that rome wasn't built in a day, but if you keep committed to one project it will grow into something big.

that's probably why i despise "scoped" games so much. all they try is to trigger some dopamine. they are like drug dealers. they are to lazy/greedy to sell healthy food, so they try selling cocaine. they will literally sell your child cocaine and then "see, it works, the sales numbers are high, it must be a good thing".

i haven't built a functional worldview yet that appreciates fun. i appreciate broader sense "fun" like hanging out with friends, learning something new, taking a walk, doing sports.
but those dopamine-optimized mini games like balatro, i just don't get why those would be a good thing. i'd rather fap for 3 hours than playing balatro for 3 hours.
i mean those games don't even have a fantasy attached to them. like, you can't even larp being a policeman, drug dealer, survivor, town manager, astronaut or anything.
i wish i'd get it. i wish i could expand my horizon of what is "good". but a game like balatro, or those round-based deck builder roguelikes, they don't make sense to me. it feels like they just try to trigger a brain reaction, almost isolated. like trying to put a pizza into a pill, so you don't have to eat the whole pizza anymore, but just need to take the pill that tells your brain that it has a good time right now. basically faking the good feeling of eating a real pizza.

>>
>>565805934
>>565806548
non-dev here, after the initial notif i get for a wishlisted game getting released, i tend to forget about it quickly because i tell myself i'll pick it up later and pretty much no other marketing happens afterwards so i just forget completely. i imagine a lot of people are like me, i treat it more like a potential backlog of things to check out when im bored, but obviously games that get marketed more recently keep a hold of my brainspace
>>
>>565806934
Same, I usually just use the wishlist as "list of games that look somewhat interesting or good enough to play that I may play at some point in the future if I'm bored, have time, and got nothing else to play". I've had some games on my wishlist for years that have gone on dozens of sales that I have not purchased.
>>
one of the worst feelings i have in gamedev is when i feel like i just play a catch up game with an existing game. basically sitting there all day trying to reach feature parity. at some point you being to question why you are rewriting another persons game and you really wonder why you have no own ideas.
>>
why did fatfuck gabencunt cross the road?
>>
>>565807195
that's a problem when you're trying to copy something and don't have anything to make the game stand out on its own

copying games is a valid approach for an underserved market but you gotta do it good

there's no point in copying a game if it's not at least as good as the game you're copying
>>
>>565806548
Games that get wishlists quickly are games that get visibility and you get visibility because you get clicks and that makes you more visibile and you get more clicks. Games that sell, sell because of visibility as well.
>>565806934
Of course, wishlists from people who don't buy don't account as much as other wishlists. But if you're on steamdb top wishlists list with 4-6k wishlists I think you're on a good/median spot. If you get wishlists from brazil or india for instance those wishlists are from accounts that don't buy a lot of games so they don't add much to your wishlist based ranking.

you can't be a gamedev youtuber talking about money without having a major cognitive dissonance. talking about gamedev itself is ok, but talking about money without having a big hit is major cognitive dissonance.
if you read schedule 1 devs old reddit posts you clearly can see that he thought that nobody will care about the game. he even thought that nobody will get what "schedule 1" means and had fear that it'll crush his chances of success.

it's totally fine teaching me about programming stuff. but talking about money, when you don't have success, it's just cognitive dissonance. especially when you realize that everybody who makes money had no idea it would happen.

it's like those pickup artists who still don't have a girlfriend. while somewhere in the world some vanilla 14 year old guy is in a stable relationship right now.

there's enough gullible retards addicted to youtube in this world which you can string along for money. there was one in this thread that used to spam gurutubers all day long. it also helps if everything you talk about is deliberately vague and unclear.

i'm looking into why you lose curiosity as a human and the only clue i have right now is that assumptions kill curiosity.

i also tie this to motivation. if you assume that your game will flop, you lose curiosity to find out if it will.

Games are extremely complex systems, and complex systems will not survive the zoomer competency crisis.

Even when you are successful you could still talk out of your ass. Like ye, in 2010 there were 50 indies per year on steam, of course visibility was not a problem.
That video is not so bad, yes it says basic stuff. But imo even here most ppl need to hear that basic shit

How does one person get to the moon? They don't.

Any game with a custom character creator is built by a studio with a team of a dozen employees who can dedicate thousands of hours each just to that system alone.

They don't have cognitive dissonance because they're selling their youtube brand/courses, not games. Like if Thomas Brush was serious about living off his games, he would realize that another 6+ months on Twisted Tower isn't going to translate into the number of sales he needs to make that time investment worth it.

Even when you have a success under your belt pretending like you know how to make money with gamedev is a bit sketchy. You know how it went down with our friend Gavin of Flop Bust fame.

Really people should just focus on honing their craft. Make a good game. If you can't make one yet then it's time to git gud. If that fails then (solo) gamedev isn't for you. Go find something else you're good at or maybe look into teams if you're good at a single part but not good in the wide range of skills necessary to solodev.

>>565811363
Good for you but it's not something to take as advice. Even trying to market can tell you a lot about your game. You get to see how people react and if they care at all. If you can't get people to care then the game probably isn't going to do very well.
>>
zukowksi has no idea what sells. otherwise he'd make a game and become ultra-rich.
"just because i don't use my money-printing machine, doesn't mean i don't have one". yeah sure faggot. no living creature in this world would avoid using knowledge to better its life. if i'd tell you there are 100k burried in a town 200 miles away from yours. and you have absolute proof they are still there, you'd drive there and dig it out. even if you'd need to drive with a bike to get there. why? because having knowledge that is undeniably correct will never leave someone inactive. the only way you would avoid going there is if risk is introduced (questionable sources, knowing too many other people know about it etc.)
>>
you guys need to stop caring about what sells and make the game you want to make

>>565812889

yeah exactly, but successful devs never claim they know how to have success. they specifically say they didn't expect it.

Zukowski doesn't tell you what will 100% sell. He tells you what has a 10% chance to sell, what has a 1% chance to sell, and that you should be making games with a 10% chance instead of a 1% chance to sell. Indie gamedevs are fundamentally entrepreneurs and small business owners. Nothing is 100% in life. Maybe you should go find a job.

There's really fuckall good info out there when it comes to complex systems like that.

If you're going the low poly texture swap armor route then Monsters & Memories dev streams can give you a peek into how they did it. They have a standard UV laid out with all the different parts of clothing they have and then they layer those clothes textures to make a final texture in game based on what the character has equipped. Every race is unwrapped to the same basics so the textures work on everything.

I think you could take that a little further and swap out meshes for different shapes of clothing which is what I think FFXI did though I'm not sure about their texturing approach. I've only poked around a bit in a model viewer and extracted some models to look at in blender but it's been a long time.

Today is the 20 year anniversary of the release of a novel by a fantasy author and he wrote a blog post about it. I'm not going to link it here because who cares about him but it was major life fuel and white pill to read it.
His first novel was rejected a bunch of times before being accepted by a publisher 2 years later and it was only 6 years after that (2 years after the release of his 4th novel) that he felt he could become a full time author. Now 20 years later those books are selling more than ever and he doesn't have a movie adaptation or anything. It's funny how 15 years after ebooks became popular paper books sales are increasing and in brick & mortar book stores too. I wouldn't touch a paper book if a digital version is available but there are all kinds of people.
I guess my takeaway is no one knows what the future holds and there are many ways to make it as long as you have passion and vision and the opportunity to make something

Zukowski identified a missing niche of two applied skills - marketing and product development. If you try to practice your skills in already established ways you will always be devalued because the market will always optimize itself. Perhaps instead of looking at it as a blueprint for a successful product you should look at it as a framework for continuous innovation inside a system that is inherently chaotic and he's showing you the positive signals and potential pitfalls.

>>
>>565815239
as a solo dev you have the luxury of not having to appeal to a majority. if 60% of players who see your game aren't interested, 25% absolutely hate it and 10% like it and 5% love it, you'll be set for life. you just need to get those 5-15% and show them your game

I did another survey on how people found my game and it seems 3 years, a steam release and a bunch of reddit posting later, it still seems only piracy sites and a little bit of itch.io really matter.

Outside of that, the only change seems to be a youtube video that featured my game and the "new" patreon recommendation system that make at least some kind of impact (those two make up most of the "Other" responses which are the small cake slices)

Do you not do a lot of cross-promos? You'd expect cross-promos to be a source of a lot of patreon users.

I'm not surprised about the F95 case but I bet if I did this myself it'd be more like 1/3 - 2/3. In fact, it'd be further complicated by the number of foreign players I may have. When looking at itch.io saying where traffic came from, it's almost entirely itch.io with very little else there, but then I guess there's no incentive to link directly to itch.io from f95.
Steam is a weird case. I've heard some developers say they get millions from steam and it outweighs Patreon but for some games I've seen on dgg and the likes it performs well under, if review counts mean anything.

True, steam makes up more of the non-patrons (but also TFgames and to a lesser extent F95)
TFgames is explained either because the game isn't TF enough or because they expect free games. Steam makes sense, steam users aren't the kind that'd like to use Patreon and I'm not sure you're even allowed to link to Patreon on steam.

but, how much of the steam audience is even finding this survey then? Did you post it to the steam community forums?

It would probably look best if the leg IK subtly magnets towards squishable targets within range. The corpse should be a decal instead of the particle splatter.
>>
>>565827996
>>565828508
Also now that I think about it, SKA probably maintains control over the F95 thread meaning there won't be paywall versions on F95, right? As long as it's updated frequently enough, which shouldn't be a problem with how often it's updated.

Skycorp's dev once posted about how they switched to using what was effectively DRM and they suddenly got a 2.5x spike in patreon users. Seems like a big factor.

I won't speak to survival horror specifically, but horror games can be made incredibly linearly (much easier to make) and can market themselves much easier. You really need a lot of style and flair to make an RPG stand out.

Horror is probably easier but I'd consider that a lot of the most famous (And profitable) indie games are RPGs. Undertale/Deltarune, Omori, LISA, Fear and Hunger, Disco Elysium, etc.
The quirky indie RPG inspired by Earthbound became a meme for a reason.

Disco Elysium was a whole team and wouldn't be possible solodev.

As for Undertale/Omori...
There's countless horror games with virality. Baldi's Basics, FNAF. Heck, go to ManlyBadassHero on youtube and sort by Popular. Instant free list of games like that. Coffin of Andy and Leyley, Look Outside, etc etc.
>>
>>565832905
disco elysium's art style looks like pure ai gen
everything ai excels at is a feature in disco
>>
>>565832598
The most profitable indie games are Stardew Valley, Terraria, Rimworld, Factorio, etc. Minus Disco Elysium, which is a $39.99 AA game, all of those games you listed COMBINED doesn't even match the profits of a single one of those. You are extremely retarded.
>>
>>565822761
I keep saying, /agdg/ needs to do twitter circlejerks and maybe even "encourage" reddit posts like you see other indie devs do (no shade)

We could be making the best fucking games on the planet and it won't matter if people don't know about them
>>
>>565833134
I was talking in the context of horror vs RPG.
Yes, survival crafting games mog both.
With that said, I'd wager that Undertale and FNAF have made more money than Factorio or Terraria.
Mainly because of merchandising.

SKA used to get partically instant pirated the moment a new version released, although that has recently slowed down.

What is pretty impactful is that I have been able to put up a demo version for my new game with a time limit and it has been only pirated once until now.
Most of my new players have discovered me from those updates it seems (starting end of August on the chart) and the "pirated game" being a demo version probably helped me a lot.

I came up with a new game
2+ players
set up billiards with only cue balls, on your turn you can shoot from any cue ball at any other. Each ball that is sunk is worth one point. There are no scratch penalties, the ball you use as a cue can count as a point if it has made contact with at least one other ball or times hitting a bumper before being sunk. Ending the game with no balls on the table (final shot clears the board) is worth an additional point and is called a 'Zeich'.

Why do people act like UI is hard?
>>
>>565853096
It's not hard to program.
It's not even that hard to get an acceptable looking UI finished.
But it is very hard to make a UI that looks good, fits the game well and is functional. Most UIs can only manage 2/3.
There is a reason most developers just make everything black transparent squares with white boarders now.
>>
>>565853379
Oh

The type of games that sell the best on PC/Steam are mostly menu games, and if menus are going to be the vast majority of your gameplay, then any good developer will want to spend a lot of serious effort to make the menus as nice as possible.

but i think i'd need some wireless nice setup to make that an enjoyable thing. just setting up a decent mic quality is annoying when you need to buy expensive equip and it hangs in front of your face etc. - fucking annoying.

i wonder if there is a massive psychological effect going on right now where people feel like they run out of time to make money. and therefore burning out by just thinking about work.

i mean. imagine you'd start gamedev now. you plan to learn it for the next 5 years. and then you plan to make a lifelong career in gamedev. you'd probably be way more chill.

but we don't even know if there's still a gamedev market like it exists right now in 10 years. we don't know what ai will be like in just 3 years. we don't know how trends shift. we don't know if we can even compete anymore when more and more competition exists.

i mean old devs actually built game studios and franchises. now we are just trying to get a viral hit going in 6 months and hope we can retire from it. we don't even know the studio names of games anymore. and most hits don't ever get a sequel.

Give up after multiple attempt at getting job and failed

Give up making mobile game after his Flappy Bird clone game failed

Making Amber Hageman working two jobs while he was playing world of warcraft instead working on stardew

Give up hiring employee and growing his company after getting backstabbed by his own employee, justified

Using burner Twitter and YouTube account to talk shit and harass EVERY SINGLE GAMEDEV that making farming sims game, the latest game he is talking shit about is Emberville made by CohhCarnage

Lurking on 4chan instead of working on Haunted Chocolatier

Doesn't even marry Amber Hageman after all she been going through

Doesn't even paying Amber Hageman brother hospital bill after he suffer from brain damage and will likely die soon, Amber Hageman mom need to start a GoFundMe to pay hospital bill

Announce his chocolate game to early because he's afraid and jealous Witchbrook going to cannibalize his fanbase

Doesn't give his employee a career growth ladder, no stock, no 401k, basically giving them a dead end job with crazy NDA and no HR oversight

being really good at using AI inherently means being well versed in all tasks that you need to supervise the AI doing and a wealth of good and original ideas (as AI has little or none of those).
the irony for all that is you are not simply born being well versed and full of good and original ideas, those are things you educate and train for through experience in the skills you are asking the AI to do. so a wannabe with AI will still get outclassed by an experienced artisan without AI and ultra-outclassed by experienced with AI.
giving you an AI to make a game is like giving a toddler an AR-15 to take to war

Creating something is putting your creativity into it. If you're generating everything using AI and just assembling the final product then you've allowed a computer to decide a lot of what your game is. That rust on your character's armor? That's the result of an algorithm assuming this is where some would be. Not a conscious choice by you to put it there because maybe their armor was scratched after they took a stab in the shoulder years ago.

In small doses it's probably fine but if I learn a game was mostly made using AI then there is nothing in the game I'm going to analyze or think about it. I'm just going to assume the entire thing is generated slop with barely any user input. It's like potato chips. Just empty calories made to kill time.

AI, even AI art, is so good most people could never tell its AI.
Why announce you use it?
Imagine a world where anyone could press a button and have the body of their dreams, right? If you were a chud who pressed the button and became a chad what would you gain by telling people you used to be a chud?

>Feedback (Thoughts):
Nothing negative since this is the final version, so just thoughts. I really like the cute pic on the game page, the art there looks nice and warm. Very inviting. Now for the game itself. Played as Rosemary not like that's really important for the review but... I like redheads. I played this game some time ago, I believe casual mode, it was nice. But the bullet hell mode is hard! Cute game, looks like something you'd see on a flash gaming website in the past. The music is nice.
>Bugs:
Maybe the below?
>Suggetions:
Z as an attack button quickly results in text passing by before I could react and thus missed dialog. Could use something to prevent that but since you're done with this game, this may not be important to you but would be nice if the game remains up.

>>565877938
They do well if they ever get finished. 99.9%+ of retards who try making an RPG never even come close to the finish line.
>>
>>565878792
I feel like the issue is that most indie developers don't build systems that allow you to create content quickly for a RPG game. RPG is the quantity over quality genre so something like a non-essential cutscene or basic bitch enemies need to be done in a few hours not a few days. It's why I think RPG Maker RPGs actually get finished compared to other engines - they have systems in place that let you build content very quickly.
>>
>>565879161
It's not just that. Even people who use premade systems like RPGMaker will struggle to ship. RPGs are massive projects that historically have been built by dozens of Japanese wagecucks working 80 hour weeks for years. Any half decent RPG has at least a few novels worth of text. How many novels have you written?
>>
>>565879401
I don't think writing dialogue would take up the bulk of the work for a RPG. I feel like making maps and enemy encounters would be more time consuming.
But I get your point. Content is certainly a problem.
>>
>>565878792
>>565879161
>>565879401
>>565879672

I think with AI, you can cut down the development process for an RPG by half, easily.
>>
>>565879910
I dunno if you've used AI for writing but it produces some really bland ass dialogue. I guess you could use AI for the first pass and try to punch it up later though.
>>
>>565879910
Half of a dozen Japanese wagecucks working 80 hours per week for a year is still going to be 20k+ hours worth of work.

I started in 2013 and thinking back on it it's weird. I don't think I could have made a good game back then. I might have made one by accident I suppose but I wasn't thinking about gamedev on a level that would lead to success back then. On the other hand the code I wrote 10 years ago is something I'm struggling to understand today. Had I leaned into that I could have become some sort of coding savant and maybe that would have led to some autism game that had the potential to be big.

146 days left, I owe 15 hours to my game. It's like some ominous version of that 99 bottles of beer song.
It's day 7 of working on the tutorial that was supposed to take 4 days and isn't even necessary. I can only hope my huge underestimate of how long this would take is an outlier. It changes little, though. The game will simply have less content at release and if it flops no one will care, and if it does okay I can add content rapidly.

the perpetual nodevs here have no intention of actually making games so they spend all their days looking for these sorts of magical solutions and often post about that shit here
