You're probably using the wrong mark. The Crucis has a strikedown activated heavy, which works great for the single targets, and that's all it's good for. But the Ironhelm has a horizontal sweep as its activated heavy strike, which cleaves right through hordes of trash and only triggers the weapon special when it hits an elite. With the Ironhelm, you can basically use nothing but activated heavy strikes and still be able to clear mixed hordes as well as monsters.

I don't think tide combat has broad enough audience appeal in the first place. The learning curve is too steep, and PVE games with such a learning curve don't have much of a market. Soulslikes don't even count either, since the control scheme has been overused so much that nobody is gated by muscle memory anymore, and it's just an exercise in patience and memorization with a sprinkling of finding an OP build.
The average casual just wants his power fantasy and has no interest in learning game mechanics. It might be possible to have some semblance of casual appeal by making the lower difficulties really easy but kinetic enough to be satisfying, but then the difficulty system would need MAJOR gating akin to havoc as it is now, but across the board. Make it genuinely too punishing for some retard to rise through the ranks so they don't ruin their own fun. You've seen what retards do with the agency to select difficulty at will: They pollute aurics and expect to get carried, only to instantaneously wipe when there's 4 of them in the same game, or even 3 and 1 normal player that isn't yet good enough to solo carry.
And handling the psychology of retards is probably harder than programming a combat system. Tide games are elegantly simple in what they do, and a lot of enemy and combat design is just ripped from L4D with a massively improved melee system.
