Strive 2.0 basically is a wake up call about what define as a big nerf patch in fighting games so much so the top 8 on EVO Japan has the most variety of characters and no HC despite the infinite blockstring oversight so kudos for that.

SF6 uhh is underwhelming right now not because of the Alex drama but the patches so far sucks and the game is still the same as ever with Mai winning EVO Japan as the cherry on top. That aside, it's still the most popular fighter and that WORLD RECORD IS A LIE THERE WAS A SF2 SNES TOURNAMENT BACK IN THE 90s THAT HAS 8K+ ENTRANTS.

Granblue is also underwhelming. Top tier creeps, meta is still the same with fucking Ferry winning EVO Japan again and right now it feels like it's having content drought. I have doubts on 2.60 because of the upcoming new mechanic, devs still wearing the 66L shirt and no season 3 announcent so far.

Tekken 8? Hmm after the season 3 first patch disaster they do manage to make a good patch for once but that's still not enough so the game still has problems. I guess Kazuya winning EVO Japan is a plus.

I think this is a niche for absolute ADHD autists who are drawn to the long combos, super move spam/combinations, and something about the simpler characters movesets and extremely locked down movement keep things on rails and predictable. Even a game like DBFZ which did a lot to bring some new system mechanics in with DBZ techniques still can't break out of this skeleton of the genre and all feeling samey and repetitive. I don't think there's any tag fighter game that wouldn't be better if it were made 1v1 and all the characters' movesets were expanded and fleshed out to make them more unique.

This is also why KOF is the far superior version of a team fighter.

While there are some good movement abilities in MVC3 with flight mechanics and wavedashing is okay, I wouldn't call it exceptional or anything. It's not gonna have 3D or platform fighter movement, but the basic movement schemes should be as robust as your ability to output hitboxes.

DBFZ's is particularly egregious for this because there's no middle ground between a slow little tipetoe walk and careening across the screen at 100mph. So, neutral turns into just jumping around instead, and superdashing when appropriate. Grounded movement is so stiff it's just optimal.

I do not think that there will be a wave of 3D fighters.
Its such a weird offshoot in the genre and lacks a good framework to copy, unlike 2D which always could just use SF2 as a foundation.
Meanwhile 3D is such a weird shitshow or contrivances that developed over years that I just cant imagine some devs create a new one out of nothing.
Like yeah we might see sequels to existing 3D fighter franchises but I just dont see new stuff popping up the way it happened with 2D.

Copying Tekken or SoulCalibur always worked fine.

Budokai series was Tekken basis but string based with guard cancels and some DBZ mechanics added on top. Other anime fighters that are more weapon based went a little more SoulCal. It was never rocket science, we got a new one of these games literally every YEAR for multiple IPs from like 2002 up to Burst Limit in 2010. The 00's were filled with 3D fighters to the point that even Mortal Kombat was doing it. 3D fighters were just the basis for fighting games then, especially licensed ones.

Then you even had sort of 3D hybrids like Def Jam or the Simpsons wrestling shit.

Most of these 3D fighters went nowhere. The 3D Mortal Kombats were extra rancid and died when people realized that not everything new HAS to be 3D gameplay.
Personally I also think that stuff like budokai is generic licensed dogshit and see no future in stuff like that.

There was some early 3D stuff with potential like tobal and bloody roar and they just shat themselves.

Def Jam is specifically a wrestling game with a rapper paint job made by a studio that made WWF games before. Very cool, but not really 3D fighter in the original sense.

The Budokai series was a massive success and you can't have played them if you think they're generic. They had some of the best 3D fighter gameplay by the time of B3 and IW refining their format.

3D fighter genre can easily be as successful and ubiquitous as it was in the past. For whatever reason studios/publishers saw DBFZ's success and though tag fighters were the new thing to make, and then they all crashed and flopped with 2XKO probably achieving the zenith of that. 3D fighters are far more intuitive and easy for normies to pick up and play because you just point your character around on the 3D plane and hit buttons. This is why Soul Calibur II was such a massive general audience success, it was intuitive to pick up and play with friends.

T8 shit the bed adding the atrocious Heat system, but VF6 seems more chill and stripped down and DOA is DOA. However it would take a big brand IP like Dragon Ball, DC, Marvel, getting back into the genre to make it the new thing. Pokken could have been cool if it didn't try to also be an arena brawler.

3D fighters have a very established framework since they were being made for decades. SF4 just popularized 2D ones.
Bloody Roar had a whole series of games and people are clamoring for it back. Virtua Fighter is about to come back in a big way. A new Soulcalibur might be in development. And there were tons of 3D fighters during the PS1 and Dreamcast era that left a mark on fighting game history. Tech Romancer, Zero Divide, Tobal, Soul Edge/Calibur, Yuusha, Deadly Arts. I'm making one myself that's inspired by these and has giant women in it.

Well yeah. All good 3D fighting games are built on the Virtua Fighter sankaku (triangle) system.

Basically it's just grabs beat blocking, blocking beats strikes, and strikes beat grabs. That's a given, but you can layer stuff on top of this (like projectiles, supers, all the things 2D fans like). Most 3DFG devs try to keep it "realistic" though so they don't typically fuck with more silly elements like that. Tekken started doing it but apparently their audience deosn't like it.

Fighting games just dont play like normalfags them to. Ever play with someone new? They ask where the jump button is, where the block button is, where the run button is, they mash buttons because 6 attack buttons is too much for them to grasp and they cant tell the difference, a new player wont jump and do an attack because a flying kick attack is anime nonsense and doesnt happen in boxing mma or anything irl, like wise they dont crouch attack either. They dont block high or low. When theyre in hitstun they will mash and theyll ask why they cant break out of the combo. If they hit the buttons fast theyll ask why theyre not getting combos.

And most of this shit even if you tell them about it they will not implement into their play. Should we start catering to retards? This is who youre trying to play with. They do not learn, theyre impossible to please, they dont really even like games to begin with these retards have only played pokemon and gta and will trade in their ps5 for a ps6 and will only have a couple games with it yet wont hesitate to buy that ps6 despite having zero idea what theyll play on it, they bought the ps5 and sold their entire ps4 collection and when you tell them its backwards compatible they say but i bought the ps5 to play ps5 games and you tell them everything is cross gen they do not care and can not name a single specific game other than gta6 which hasmt even come out yet

Unrelated to fighting games, but I think a big reason RTS declined is that in the 2010s they moved from controlling individual units to controlling squads, which killed the micro.
Microing units might have been difficult, but it gave the gameplay a certain cool factor without which there wasn't a reason to invest time into getting good at multiplayer.

These games originated in the arcades. And a key point of the arcade is that you had to be able to communicate what's fun about your game immediately. The moment you popped a coin in it had to be at least somewhat intuitive how to attack, how to block, how to jump. It is intuitive. There's no one alive who "asks where the jump button is". You figure it out as soon as you move your controls around and just see what the buttons do.

If a fighting game isn't fun to mash in then it's not fun period. Mashing is essential to the genre.

Devs don't give a fuck. They just want money. monster hunter world was dumbed down for casuals and sold well, so capcom dumbed down Wilds even more but you will still have people complaining monster hunter is too obtuse and has clunky combat even when they give weapons shit like perfect blocks/dodges and the universal mechanic to just manually aim your weapon meanwhile longtime players have to deal with a game you can sleepwalk through except for a few endgame quests. I think street fighter will have a similar problem. SF6 dumbed down shit and blew up. SF7 will double down on the most retarded aspects of 6 and end up being another jive to the core playerbase while the casuals who were never interested in a fighting game are still put off.
