The Knight can't or won't advocate for itself, and part of the conflict of the chapter is whether you should even bother trying to save it from Asgore's judgment. Kris (and possibly Noelle if she's present) pretty much forces you to do it, and you slowly uncover evidence that the Knight IS Dess and therefore can't be guilty of killing Dess. Asgore can't accept the truth, so you have to convince him to back down through a boss fight. Then as soon as you free the Knight, they backstab you, kill Asgore and/or Carol, and start the Roaring.
