I played the whole of shadowlands and never figured out how to activate the abomination factory.

I researched it on like 5 characters then it was just there outside with no interactibles or quests.

I couldn't be bothered to look it up or clear every quest in the zone, so I still don't know.

At the bare minimum it should require you to do the campaign before you unlock flying. Being able to skip 99% of the content and just zip from quest objective to quest objective ruins the atmosphere completely, and 3/4 of the Midnight zones are crammed full of trees for you to get stuck on while flying.
