The best way to use it is to just keep an eye on your dog and blow it up when it's surrounded. Either that, or hold on to your charges for when you need to stagger a monster. The ability is pretty underwhelming, you can often in fact be better off just bringing frags or mines with the dog. Dog + mines works out really well in havoc, if you can grab the occasional ammo pickup. 4-6 mines per game should be all you really need.
