You don't need any sort of intelligence to learn a language (how else could literal babies do it?). Just expose yourself to it and your brain will passively absorb it. Don't let the bs about how you can only learn it as a kid deter you. You have a big advantage over kids in that you already know one language, so you don't need someone to point at a cat to learn the japanese word for cat, they can just say "neko means cat". Just blast yourself with an Anki deck every day and you'll get it pretty quick (relative to a child...it will still take a few years).

You have to read the whole word to know what it means and at that point its not any different from an English word. I will say you can at least possibly guess at the meaning from the kanji, but on the flip side there is absolutely no way you can know how it should be read. In English the opposite is true, where you can make a good guess at the reading but have no idea what the meaning is.
