Opinion sent over from /akg/. The problem with endfield's story isn't about greyslop in my opinion, but the complete lack of effort to capitalize on characters for themselves rather than how good they ride dick. Some characters stories try to to aliviate this, but it's not great and a lot got damaged by the separation. Worst of all is that the characters were integrated in earlier versions, especially angie, and HG just removed them to shove in later ones anyway. When playing through emdfield all the way up to the end of this patch stuff just happened and you did chores to respond to it. Like the sentiment around Neferith's death is all "that can't be it" for a reason, the whole sequence had zero impact cause she was a non-entity and was doing non-established bullshit. Sadly, similar types of writing is slipping into the latest arc of arknights and we're getting vapid misery porn while the evil rock god does jack shit and vagueposts. Arc two likely caused this for both games as everyone was too busy complaining about nothing happening to appreciate the vestiges of empire's glory fart sniffing after the initial gacha attention spam was wasted on a boss gauntlet that eventually became a perma tumor in the story.

This is one reason that they used throwaway reconveners as several launch operators; there was no need to establish a story for them, as OG players would know who they were already, freeing up more of their resources for the industry's largest tutorial.IMO, Tangtang and Fangyi offer a much better look at what HG aspires to do with their operator stories. In my opinion, it doesn't really hit the OG's highs, but it's solid enough for the game's first year, and shows how they WANT to have the characters have their own lives and stories.
