Not really. Assuming you mean map 3, you just need a few support dolls like reissi, suomi/helen, springfield and a fast doll like belka or Daiyan. With so much shields, overheal and immunity for 1 hit from reissi the dinergate easily survives. You just run in with your fast doll to activate the two switches, if you can do that, you are set.

It's just something to incorporate an elemental system and to make dolls more diverse and skills more spectacular. It would be boring if 90% of dolls had skills that amount to "throw a grenade" or "use your knife"

You can enjoy it, but at times it will feel like you need to do some homework in order to enjoy it. As someone who never played gfl1 but listened to many recaps of the games story, it made me appreciate the story even more.
