Elder Scrolls is one of the few settings where vampires actually feel evil and repulsive to me desu.In real folklore from the Balkans (where the vampire myth originated from) they were basically just revenants who dug themselves out of the grave to haunt people they had unfinished business with, and the solution was to stake their body into the grave so they couldn't leave it, hence wooden stakes being a weakness to vampires. In most other fantasy settings it's just a typical curse, others try to make it more sci-fi by making vampires some predatory species, advanced evolution, or some awakened power.But in TES knowing that vampires were made by an evil rape god through the process of rape and that dying as a vampire damns your soul to his personal rape hell where he will rape you for all eternity makes it actually pretty fucked up. Vampirism exists so the closest thing to absolute evil in the TES universe can just inflict more suffering and humiliation on people. The book Vampires of Vvardenfell points out that become proto-vampirism is easily cured, most vampires became so willingly, for the sake of power or longevity. Pretty much all vampires in TES are psychopaths who don't mind feeding off of innocent people for their benefit. They're all wretched. I don't even like roleplaying as vampires in TES games anymore.
