I dont know if anybody has experience with turn based games using MVC, but im unsure if what im doing is completely retarded or not. Basically my commands all have default visualizations, like on hit, on move and whatnot, and they usually use the shared visualization tags within characters. But for special attacks i need to overwrite them. My current idea is to have a overwrite component that writes a tag into my commands so that i can then read them out and tell the game to not visualize their behavior again, as itll be handled differently. Id most likely just end up writing a big switch statement that returns the class that processes it. But it sounds a bit hacky.. >>567342396I just read my post again, sorry for my scuffed writing. I watch for a c_attack component being added to an entity, and then I have `.has_all([c_attack, c_normal])` and `.has_all([c_attack, c_special])` queries that return entities the animations are run for.my game is kind of turn-based in that actions have cost and there is a sorted queue for who moves next (lowest total AP) but the game loop runs in real-time

>>567346459Thank you for the reply. Btw which game are you working on?>I use observers and pattern matching in ECS for things like thisI didnt go with ECS because i had a traumatic experience with it at my last job. Right now i go through actions, which each produce commands that get stored in a command list while doing the most recent one to keep the world map updated for the calculation. Then when the action is finished i go back the command list. I use this command list to evaluate the ai actions, display the forecast and the visualization when the action is chosen. It saves me a lot of time. Its just a bit disgusting to handle and debug. I used to have observers, but the game starts to lag with them, as each time you hover an input option the entire effect gets calculated. I also dont cull enemy actions, so if he has 40 input options he will calculate all of them, which doesnt lag. But lets say he can move to 20 tiles freely and then attack 50 tiles. Suddenly i calculate it 1000 times.. And with my shitty code that already gives me a small spike, as i create a bunch of classes, iterate through lists and modify them.. Pattern matching would def make it way easier, but i have no idea how id handle that. I should look into it though. Thanks for telling me how you do it. Ill try to adapt it.

>>567347134
>>567348228yeah observers can be tricky. typically you need to have them defer their logic until there is free time in a frame. More often than not logic is better off running in some sequential systems.ECS be a pain to think about until you realize it's basically the same thing as a database. you could think of an entity as a primary key, and components as foreign keys linked to it. the benefit is that all my systems are uniform. I tell them the order to run into, and they say "please give me all entities with x,y, z components" and then iterates over what it got back.currently my game loop is in groups of systems, I think there are maybe 10-12 total:- spawn- turn_start (declare whose turn it is)- input (player input and ai context)- choice (ai choice based on context, also some item logic)- actions (everyone's stuff runs in order)- turn end (get next turn)- uiactions in the game dispatch callables to a queue so that I can make sure everything executes in order.I'd really like to share more about the game I'm working on but I don't want to be associated with some of the stuff in these generals.

>>567348891ECS sounds good from what i know and what you said, its just a bit scary to work with because of how many layers of modifiers i could and want to get into. I also have multi input cards that need to be reversible if you decide to cancel the input on the second or maybe even third step. I think youd just clear all the components on the board, but what if you want them applied before calculating the next step, do you save them in layers for the turns and go back in time through reversing the board state? Wouldnt that be costly?I use a state machine for the game and wait until player input is given. Dragging a card, enemy actions, even entering combat is its own state. I have a few really messy classes. Picrel is the core function that everything that affects the game logic passes through. Be it the pathing of a unit outside of combat, an attack in combat, an entity entering a hitbox, or a dialogue box/choice. Its extremely messy to debug but once it works it feels good, as i dont have to program edge cases like "what if a character dashes into an enemy and while the enemy passes your other character, his opportunity attack should trigger, which then triggers the thorns modifier on the character youre dashing against a second time giving you more damage, potentially killing you" the system luckily displays all the damage caused. And that means enemies automatically can evaluate actions by evaluating outputs.Id also like to know more about the gameplay, and id say you could message me in the discord, but i left it recently. So all i can say is good luck with your project and thanks for sharing how you do things, i saved it as a reference. :>

>>567351353I'm procedurally generating items, enemies, levels, lore, etc so I feel you on the layers of modifiers issue.I don't know if this really a "game dev" concept, but in the big enterprise software world we use a concept called event sourcing a lot. at it's core, it's a sequential log where events in the log have a parent id for the previous event that caused them. so if you issue a command your event would include a UUID or something tying it to that command. The benefit is that as commands are processed and create chains of events, you can unwind of reply them. great if you want to take a list of events and run a list of callables on them for really complex modifiers. could be worth looking into? might be overkillthat's okay, I don't really have much social stuff these days either. Especially now that Antrophic teamed up with Elon and he gave them access to their big ass Grok data center and they were able to loosen the limits in peak hours etc that they previously put in. The main reason why Claude cost so much was because their project, unlike OpenAI/ChatGPT, is bottlenecked by hardware (OpenAI called dibs on future hardware production first, so there's chip shortage for other companies).

That being said, keeping your logic stateless, and offloading game state to a ledger like that is a great way to keep things decoupled. It also means you can have a producer write 1 thing to 1 long that N number of consumers can all ready from at the same time. There might be some more memory efficient identifiers than UUIDs too depending on your engine.git is another good example of event sourcing now that I think of it. each commit has hash that denotes its lineage and you can rebuild the state if you reply the commits.

Your game doesn't NEED goonable characters because in theory nothing can stop a goonercel, so every character is a goonable character. You should focus on the supply chain logistics instead of the character design. For example hollow knight has no intentionally goonable characters, but it does have over 150 characters at least one has to have over 1k under the character tag on some r34 site (don't ask me how I know those exist). Do you have at least 150 characters WITH ANIMATIONS?If making one character in some finalized way takes you best case one hour that's over 6 days of nonstop work, in reality you gooners will be lucky to make one a day that's almost half a year. You gotta realize that MVP (minimum viable product) will take a least one year and it will be shit, that's why most indie game devs take four years minimum.>inb4 referencing devs who were making projects for years before asset flipping a FOTM in a few monthsLet's me put it into simple terms if you can't even make garten of banban in a few months, give up. You're game will take a decade. That is to say: HOBBY
>>567351361>just hold back basic information that anyone interested will have to ask for....You mean like the silent auction scam you tried on steam 10 years ago that got you banned and all your games removed? The one we were just laughing about last thread? >>567277064Having an achievement in your game that told people to ask you about it ("hold back basic information") then you would beg them to give you paypal money to be in the "silent auction"? You mean like that?
>>567354267There isn't much to them if you want to roll your own. Entities are empty containers for holding components. Components hold data with no logic. Systems query the world for entities with certain components and then does stuff with them. >>567367921I mean it's not exactly surprising. His first "game" and the thing he is still most proud of was about murdering children.
>>567368832That wasn't aimed at kids though. The other stuff was meant to bait children into watching it. It's videos of their favorite cartoon characters doing twisted adult things and violent things. The spiderman elsa scandals, similar to that. But yeah, not surprising. It was right up his alley. You could almost say he was born to commit such atrocities as mentally harming children. Many of whom are now becoming adults. I'm not so sure about it after watching their trailer. It might be the developer in me going into overdrive about the analysis. The trailer was disjointed and didn't showcase gameplay well. What I did see from it I was disappointed by the realistic assets they used for the environment. Normally a 3d anime game has at least slightly stylized environmental assets but it looks like they used a bunch of premade realistic assets for it. Normies probably don't care about that though. The combat didn't look so great but it could be that the trailer misrepresented it. A lot of the areas where combat took place were incredibly bland arenas which was lame. If my taste determined its success then it wouldn't do well but enough normies might buy into it. It does come off as a pretty high effort game so it's probably gonna do alright.

>>567389412I don't understand how Epic Games fumbled the Epic Game Store so hard. Were the top managers in charge of it just completely and utterly corrupt and incompetent?
>>567389721Or was Epic Games afraid of other game developers competing with their games? Making the jump from game developer to game store business might be scary and filled with risks. Valve somewhat combined the two. Valve gives covert advantages to their own games (like review manipulation), but not so much that most other game developers are deterred from using Steam, whether big or small. Valve restrains its "cheating" in some regards.
>>567389721Nobody was ever going to beat steam. Everyone loves to imply Epic just needs to add this or that feature and it would compete, but Epic has clearly already done the research to conclude that it's not true. And they make a fortune everyday from Fortnite and Unreal Engine royalties so they don't really care that much. If Steam could be beaten, Apple or Microsoft would have done it already, Microsoft just cut a deal with them to integrate with XBOX. Steam will be the #1 gaming platform for the rest of our life. And the fact that this will make Ryan seethe forever is delightful.
>>567390267Epic tripped out of the gate by taking 6 months to add a shopping cart. They had endless fortnite money at the time and could have thrown entire armies of programmers at getting Steam client parity. Instead they released a (still) bloated client that instantly soured everyone on ever seriously considering them.

As a former solo developer, he has been able to bring his own touch and hand to every aspect of his work, whether it's learning pixel art or composing music. He mentions this when we speak about the growing role of AI in game development.>"I think anything's lost when you use AI for any creative thing, any step of the way - unless it's being used for very specific zoomed-in cases, maybe. You're offloading creativity to an algorithm, which I think is always gonna undermine the pure and authentic human element of what you're doing. So for me, as someone who wants to express myself in an artistic way, I wouldn't ever want to use AI for any sort of creative thing, because it's beside the point of what I'm doing. My goal is to express myself in a creative way. Why would I let an AI do that for me? At the very least, let another human being express themselves if you need help.>That's probably what I would say. There are plenty of humans out there that would like an opportunity to express themselves. I feel like that should take priority over a soulless machine."

>>567416806>I hope I can find my flow making art.it honestly is the least fun, but it adds a lot of value imo. I try to invest enough in it to not feel demotivated looking at programmer art all the time, but not too much it becomes painful to replace something >What kind of world are you building? Reminds me of some games I played as a kid (golden sun, tactics ogre).Do you mean the setting? Id assume so if you say you enjoy worldbuilding. I actually havnt played much of those games, my main inspirations for the gameplay are xcom, alina of the arena, fft, with a bit of morimens (mostly deck design and maybe the ultimates they have)In regards to worldbuilding the setting is that everybody knows something is wrong with the world, everything hints at the world being created, and badly at that. No deity or divine is proven. While everything is slowly falling apart a forest has mostly claimed the world. It warps and abstracts entities with rules that seem mostly consistent. Most people fear it but it stabilizes the world. The protags father, a former archbishop vanished in a plot that ended in a third of the untouched world being swallowed by the forest. You start the game hearing about a plot that he is trying to create a utopia in the fallen capital within the forest. Most of the antagonists will consist of martyrs who try to make humanity better by becoming abstractions of fears and becoming the sole carrier. They mostly succeed, but a bit too well. Id like to give the character choices in how they want to handle it. The setting is very anachronistic. Aesthetically its all over the place between 1400-1800 and the few remaining nation states (5) all have extreme ideologies that youd find in HOI TNO or Red Flood. But the player will only be in the forest and one country. Originally i wanted to make a point and click. What about you? Are you the one who didnt want to share too much on here? If so, would you still be willing to share anything about your setting?

The only one's that seemed to not be flaky were the one's charging obscene prices. Almost like they were sweating behind the screen hoping I'd accept. Some of them even have unimpressive artstyles and would charge a boat load. I am not paying $1500 for art far lower quality than Alchemickal dev's steam art.

My design sense is not the best and def zoomer coded because im 25, i even considered making furries instead. Its not for everybody but thats fine. The card idea is also not final. Id like to try something out because i like the slight randomization and extra level to strategy cards give. But if it becomes too much of a nuisance, too clunky, or people simply dont enjoy it im willing to cut it and revert to normal abilities. But thank you for stating your thoughts :> Its good to hear opposition.
I'm working on adding classes, and giving them all some unique gear/abilities.This webm is the wizard class, with obvious basic abilities like a fireball. My plan for (wizard) magic is to have limited use tomes players can collect, then unleash as they see fit. Clerics will have a different system. Mastery over the tools and tactics of warfare and combat.* Subjugated** Signiferi - Burdened by an oppressive standard, their presence inspires all to struggle forth.** Hierodule -Sacred healer of low social standing. Channels their deity at great personal cost.** Paenitens - Repentant Sinner. Zealot. Their blood split brings retribution upon others.* Absconded** Veneficus - Poisoner. Disreputable scoundrel. Kills through latent and surreptitious means.** Bellator - Warrior. Unadorned by titles, station-less. Crying their name aloud as they descend into battle.** Zoanthrope - Permanent surrendering of the mind to take on animal aspects.* Interloper** Anteferre - Fore-bearer. Think toxic vines climbing chrome spires type stuff. Zoanthropes are a kind of "return to monke" druid-ish class. the thought is massive debuff to INT surging point into STR/DEX. Turns out a simpler version of my original game idea came out in 1995 and it's making me reconsider whether or not the new version I have developed is worth it due to how challenging it is to fix the jank and make it feel snappy due to UE4's built in short hop system which is preventing me from getting back into gamedev.

>>567438767>>567440589So not exactly. The only reason I brought up SAG was because that was one of the places I ended up looking at but that is not where my current VAs came from.
