We've been using the "trap an ascian inside aetheryte then blow up the aetheryte" method to fight ascians since Moenbryda figured it out in ARR. With Elidibus it was the same, only we didn't blow up the Crystal Tower. But even back then the idea was that if you don't blow up the aetheryte soon after, the ascian can just escape (not in the CT because it's so huge it can restrain Elidibus seemingly forever, but it does mean they're still in there).
